ANNUAL REPORT 2019-2020
MESSAGEPFRREOSMIDETNHET
Dear Foundation Friends,
To say that 2019-2020 was one for the history books would be
an understatement. The Foundation began our fiscal year in July 2019 full of
motivation to achieve our fundraising goals and get to work funding programs
across PISD. Our year was off to a great start as we welcomed our new Senior
Executive Director, Jamee Jolly, to our team. She has been an extraordinary
addition to the Foundation staff.
We settled into summer with a school supply drive during the
“farewell to Collin Creek Mall” party and participated in North Texas Giving
Day in September. In November, we delivered 114 grants to 56 schools for a
total of $130,000 amid cheers, hugs and a few tears of ecstatic PISD teachers. In
February, we hosted a rockin’ fundraiser and raised more than $300,000 at our 80s
themed SKI Plano. We had a totally awesome night!
And then COVID hit in March and the Foundation hit the ground running…in a
different direction. New needs were identified across the PISD community and we
had to pivot unlike ever before to figure out new ways to meet the needs during this
unprecedented time.
We fed 300 families through a financial grant to Minnie’s Food Pantry, and we packed
up school supplies from our CORE Store to hand deliver bags of needed supplies to
950+ PISD families. We responded with flexibility and worked hand in hand with our
donors to repurpose dedicated funds for WIFI hotspots across PISD so that students
could work remotely and finish out the school year.
2019-2020 was a year unlike any other and it hasn’t been easy. Fortunately,
we have YOU. We are incredibly fortunate to have a dedicated support system
of sponsors, donors, community partners, volunteers, staff, and Board of Directors
that make it their mission to make a difference in Plano ISD.
Please accept a heartfelt THANK YOU for continuing to answer the call by providing
financial support, and lending your hands, your hearts and talents to further the
mission of the PISD Education Foundation. Brighter days are ahead and the
Foundation will be there each step of the way to help all students in Plano ISD
achieve their full potential.
Kind regards,
Jennifer Jamieson

AVID: Passion, Inspiration, PROGRSAPMOTILNIGTHHET
Hard Work and People
Nyssa Roberts, an AVID student and 2020 Plano West graduate,
says that, “Passion, inspiration, hard work and people are the driving
forces that keep us going…these are the same forces instilled within AVID.”
What makes a student a successful, motivated learner? What sets an
exceptional student apart from a student who has that same potential
to achieve, but may be sputtering on the brink of success? In Plano ISD,
the answer is AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)
and the dedicated team of AVID teachers in schools across the district.
AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for
college readiness and success in a global society. AVID is a nationally-acclaimed program that focuses on
helping students be successful in academically rigorous coursework to ensure college readiness. Students
in the academic middle who have the potential to tackle the most rigorous classes are considered for the
AVID program through a recommendation process initiated by teachers, counselors, parents or the
students themselves.
In the 2019-20 school year, the Plano ISD AVID program included 2,901 secondary students on 22
campuses in seventh through twelfth grades. In elementary schools, AVID programs served nearly 4,800
students in fourth and fifth grades on 24 elementary campuses. The Plano ISD Education Foundation is
proud to support our district’s AVID “family” of students and the teachers. AVID is funded in part by the
Education Foundation and with help from foundation partners Abernathy Roeder Boyd Hullett and
Capital One. The AVID program grows students in their skills, confidence and, especially for students
who have never considered going to college, AVID provides a framework to help them realize they
absolutely can reach higher than they ever thought they could. College readiness is the goal for AVID
students. AVID graduates are often the first in their families to go to college, so the journey is fraught with
big questions beyond making good grades. AVID is a program that opens the doors to opportunity.
Since 2006, Plano ISD AVID has helped thousands of Plano ISD students rise above the obstacles they
face to achieve their goals. In 2019 in an AVID senior class of 334 students, 318 went on to attend college,
seven joined the military and nine joined the work force. In addition to academic scholarships offered by
universities upon acceptance, AVID students were awarded prestigious scholarships and honors such as
National Merit, Hispanic Scholar, Ford’s Driving for the Dream Scholarship, Dell Scholar, and Toyota
Scholarship. According to Nyssa, “when you join AVID you join something much bigger than yourself, and
the people around you. You walk through the gates of endless possibilities, new friends, new family, new
life skills, fun events and memories that will last for the rest of your life.” She is thankful to her teachers for
helping her find her way back to her passions even when she wasn’t being true to them herself. Teachers
kept her “…moving forward and continuing to do hard work, and feeling inspired to inspire others. I not
only care about other people, but I care about myself a little more.” Nysaa Roberts begins fall 2020 as a
freshman, in the College of Liberal Arts studying animation and game design at the University of Texas at
Arlington and is one of many 2019-20 AVID success stories in Plano ISD.

SERVINGDSUTRUIDNEGNTTHSE&PFAANMDEILMIEICS
The 2019-2020 school year will go down in history as a unique year due
to the unprecedented closures and move to remote learning due to
the COVID-19 pandemic. When students embarked on their spring
break, little did they know they would not be returning to the classroom
for the rest of the year. As a result, the Plano ISD Education Foundation
had the opportunity to pivot our strategy in order to serve the more
immediate needs of our students and families. When school closures
were announced, we began making plans to deliver much-needed
school supplies to our Plano ISD families – at their homes! The
Foundation’s CORE Store typically works directly with teachers to
provide supplies that are needed in the classroom. With students
learning at home and classrooms closed, we saw an opportunity to
utilize the supplies already in the CORE Store to assist our families.
Volunteers and Foundation staff packaged supplies, processed
requests from families and delivered supply packs in a safe manner.
We served over 950 families during a 10-week period. This allowed our
families to remain safely at home while also providing the supplies
needed to continue learning and creating.
Once the 2019-2020 school year concluded, we
then moved to restocking the store and preparing
for back to school. Through partnerships with
Capital One, Central Market and RBFCU and with
donations of supplies and cash from individuals
and organizations, we were able to provide 1,500
backpacks for Plano ISD’s Back to School Fairs. The
CORE Store will reopen for teacher shopping in
September. We appreciate the flexibility and
commitment of our supporters to help provide this
service to our teachers and students, especially
during this unique time.
