Vasco Da Gama
Vasco Da Gamas life goal was
to find a direct rout to Asia.
He was successful with this
and found a direct route
over seas to Asia. He also got
to Africa by sailing around
India.
Zheng He
Zheng He made seven
voyages from 1405 to 1433.
He is best known for leading
a very large fleet of ships
and for establishing Chinese
trade. On the left is a map of

Christopher Newport
Christopher Newport was an English
explorer who died of an unknown
death. He was born in 1561 and died
in 1617. He is best known for leading
ships to Jamestown and exploring
the Chesapeake Bay.

James Cook was an English
explorer. He has made
three voyages to search
for the southern
continents and expand
their land.

Hernando cortes
Hernando Cortes was a spanish
explorer. He defeated the Aztec
empire and built Mexico city in
1519.

Francisco Pizarro was born in
1475 and died in 1541. He
conquered the Incan empire
and Spain took control of
South America.

Henry Hudson
Henry Hudson was an explorer who
made four voyages. For his first and
second voyages he used the Hopewell
ship. For his third voyage he used a ship
called the Half Moon and for his fourth
voyage he used the Discovery Ship.

Bartolomeu Dias
Bartolomeu Dias was the first
European to sail around the tip
of Africa. He did this to get to Asia
over a sea route. Sailing around
the tip of Africa was a very hard
thing to do at the time.

Francis Drake
Francis Drake was an
English explorer. Drake
seized lots of gold on his
second voyage when he
attacked a Spanish trade
route.

Samuel De Champlain
Samuel De Champlain was a
French explorer. He was born
in 1570 and died of natural
causes in 1635. He also
founded Quebec, which
eventually led to being the first
French colony in Canada.

Ferdinand Magellan
Ferdinand Magellan is
considered the first European
to cross the Pacific Ocean. All, or
most, of the ships he used had
black tar on their halls, these
ships were known as black
ships.

Walter Raleigh
He is an English explorer that failed at
making the colony of Roanoke island.
After he failed, he tried again (but with a
new leader) and succeed. However, he
had to return to Europe to gather more
supplies and when he returned to the
Island of Roanoke the colony was
completely ruined.

Traverse Board
This was commonly found on
ships. It was a device that used
speed to measure the direction
you were going. It was also used
to record direction, speed, and
time.

Quadrant
This was commonly used on ships
during the early 1400s. This is called
a quadrant because it was ¼ of a
circle, or just a quadrant of a circle.
This was commonly used as a
navigation device.

Fluit
This ship was used as a bulk carrier
or cargo carrier. The ship was easy
to build and inexpensive, which made
it ideal at the time.

Caravel
This ship was used for fishing
purposes and transporting cargo.
It dates back all the way to the
1400s. It usually had 2-3 masts that
were interchangeable.

The victoria ship was a well known
ship that was similar to a Spanish
carrack. This ship was the first ship
to circumnavigate the world.

Barque
The barque was a ship that used
square sails and oars. This ship was
a mix between the caravel and
carrack, which then had 3 masts.

Carrack Or Nao
The carrack or nao was a ship. The ships
were developed and appeared in the 13th
and 14th centuries. These ships were
very stable in the middle of the ocean
and was large enough to be considered
an exploration ship.

Galleon
The galleon was a ship that developed in the
16th century. Depending on the region you
are at, the design of the ship was very
different. This ship was developed from the
carrack and the caravel.
Jacques Cartier(I just did an extra explorer)
Jacques Cartier was a French
explorer. He gave Canada and
Canadians their name. He also
discovered part of the mouth
of the Saint Lawrence River.
