My Life
as a
Arctic Terns
By: Nicole Amaya
My early chick days
I was born in late june; my bed is so comfy it has
a view of the beach. I have two other siblings.
While i stay with my brothers and sisters my
mom goes out fishing for small fishes for our
dinner, sometimes mom brings insects but my
favorite is sandeels.
We live at the beach where its noise, tourist like
throwing food at us

The journey begins
We usually start getting ready to go to our
winter vacation when the cold starts because
that's when there is less sunlight and without
sun hitting the water it's harder for mom to go
fishing.
We leave for six months! Mom has to teach
us how to glide through the summer.
We travel for 1.5 million miles throughout our
30 year lifespan. Which equals to three trips
to the moon and back.
Winter Vacation
After the breeding season, we migrate north. We
don't all migrate to the same place some of us
migrate to Alaska and northern Canada, south to
northern British Columbia , the Hudson Bay, and along
the Atlantic Coast to Massachusetts
Fun fact we don't spend the whole time flapping our
wings while migrating, but rather gliding. a great
amount of the distances we are gliding, we are
such good gliders we can even sleep while gliding.
Not to brag but we fly for three to four weeks! That's a
long time just gliding through the air. it's easy for us
because we have versatility wings which are easy to
adapt to anything like when we sleep while gliding or
even eat.
We have this fuel stop before heading to the tropics,
it's called the atlantic ocean we fuel up on fishes; i fuel
up on sandeels because those are my favorite, yum!
Well miss our home at the beach but canada is so
nice, it our home. There's more trees here and
different kind of fishes. I'm relieved we got here
because i was tired of gliding and i was getting very
hungry.
Our return journey
When we start returning during our spring
trip back to the greenland we follow this
zigzag pattern.
When coming back to the beaches and having
to say bye to our winter homes it's always so
difficult for me.¨i´ll miss you canada¨ i chirp
as im starting to head out. We have to start
preparing to fly back so we fuel up on fishes
it's the same process.
Home at last
We are home at last, i haven't been here
since summer ended. Although i'm glad to be
back i loved gliding w my family and doing
patterns through the air. we took a fuel stop in
the wide open atlantic ocean where i caught
the best fishes of my life we sat on pack ice
and we fly for weeks, we saw the sunsets
including sunrises and much more now i'll be
enjoying the beach and meeting tourist this
summer.
I can't want for next winter vacation!!
Sad story, we are vulnerable to foxes, skunks, dogs, cats, and avian predators, which
one day could lead to our extinction. We are also projected to lose 20 to 50 percent of
our homes due to the temperature changes linked to climate change.
