families and properties of the families
The Periodic Table: Families and
Periods. In the periodic table of elements,
there are seven horizontal rows of
elements called periods. The vertical
columns of elements are called groups,
or families.
3
Metals:
a solid material that is typically hard,
shiny, malleable, fusible, and ductile, with
good electrical and thermal conductivity
4
Nonmetals:
an element or substance that is not a
metal.
5
Metalloids:
an element (e.g., germanium or silicon)
whose properties are intermediate
between those of metals and solid
nonmetals. They are electrical
semiconductors.
6
periodic law:
1. the law that the properties of the
elements are periodic functions of their
atomic numbers.
2. Also called Mendeleev's law.
(originally) the statement that the
chemical and physical properties of the
elements recur periodically when the
elements are arranged in the order of
their atomic weights.
7
noble gas electron configurations:
The electron configuration of a noble
gas is ns² np⁶, where n is the principal
quantum number of the valence
electrons. ... Fluorine forms F- (fluoride)
ions (with one more electron and
therefore a full octet), which have an
electron configuration of 1s^2 2s^2
2p^6 , the same as neon (symbol Ne),
which is a noble gas.

8
Atomic:
relating to an atom or atoms.
9
Radiusa:
straight line from the center to the
circumference of a circle or sphere.
10
ionic charges:
To find the ionic charge of an element
you'll need to consult your Periodic Table.
On the Periodic Table metals (found on
the left of the table) will be positive.
Non-metals (found on the right) will be
negative. But you need to know the
specific ionic charge elments.

Electronegativity:
Electronegativity is a measure of the
tendency of an atom to attract a bonding
pair of electrons. The Pauling scale is the
most commonly used. Fluorine (the most
electronegative element) is assigned a
value of 4.0, and values range down to
caesium and francium which are the least
electronegative at 0.7.
12
octet rule:
The octet rule is a chemical rule of
thumb that reflects observation that
atoms of main-group elements tend to
combine in such a way that each atom
has eight electrons in its valence shell,
giving it the same electronic configuration
as a noble gas.
13
valence electrons
J Carbon has four valence electrons
and here a valence of four. ... In
chemistry, a valence electron is an
electron that is associated with an atom,
and that can participate in the formation
of a chemical bond; in a single covalent
bond, both atoms in the bond contribute
one valence electron in order to form a
shared pair.
