BALI
As one of the better known Indonesian islands, Bali attracts the crowds, but the underwater world is often overlooked. Dive sites are located all around the island of Bali, to the South you will find Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Sanur where Manta Rays can be seen in the months of April and May and the oddly beautiful Mola Mola from August to October. To the East, Tulamben has one of the best and easiest wreck dives in the world, the USS Liberty. Also in the East is Amed, known for its easy and relaxed diving with little current and magnificent coral. Then muck diving at its finest on the northwest side of the island at Secret Bay Gilimanuk and Seraya Secrets.
To the West lies the protected island Menjangan, offering the opportunity to dive the virtually ‘untouched’ reefs and walls - and great snorkelling for non-divers too!. The West Bali National Park, established as a conservation zone in 1917, the health of the underwater life is breathtaking, and visibility here is often at 50 metres and beyond.
Walls, reefs, cave and cavern systems, and of course the wreck of the USAT Liberty are all on hand when visiting Bali, with great visibility, warm waters, and the famous Balinese hospitality make a trip to this part of the World well worth it - and it doesn’t break the bank either, with a choice of flight routes, great accommodation and super-cheap dining options outside of the Hotels.
What to see: Expect great muck and macro diving and the plethora of critters seen on pretty much every dive. But it isn’t all tiny stuff either - the big fish fans will be excited as Bali is the home of the Mola-Mola, and these can be huge, weighing in at over 1000kgs! White-tipped reef sharks, Oceanic Manta rays, turtles and the famous bump-headed parrot fish in schools on the Liberty wreck in particular.
