GRENADA OCT 2019 BENENDEN SCHOOL WITH BLUE OCEAN DIVING

DIVE GRENADA 2019
TRIP DESIGNED FOR DELIVERED BY

GRENADA
Grenada is one of our favourite Caribbean diving destinations, but its stature is not limited to just the Caribbean, as Grenada offers some of the best wreck diving anywhere! This tiny island, situated in the Southern Caribbean off the Venezuelan coast offers the ultimate holiday experience. Spectacular beaches fringing the gin-clear waters of the Caribbean, amazing rainforests bursting with life, mangroves, huge waterfalls and breath-taking scenery – all enhanced by the flamboyant night life and ambience on this ‘spicy’ island!
Below the waterline, Grenada really delivers too. Quality dive centres provide excellent service, in an almost British fashion when it comes to organisation too. The reefs, both local and offshore, together with a protected marine reserve, offer divers plentiful marine life from the small to the big stuff. There is also an underwater sculpture museum – it is surreal to sit on a bench at 10m and take in the view of the collection of human sculptures created by the British sculptor Jason de Caires Taylor and depicting a true picture of Grenada’s culture and people.
Where Grenada really comes into its own is the huge choice of wrecks. Often referred to as ‘the wreck capital of the Caribbean’, Grenada offers the wreck enthusiast 15+ quality wrecks to explorec. But not only the wreck enthusiast gets their way in Grenada – Reef and Marine life are abundant around the Island. Rare Sightings of Black Brotula for example and critters are as common as pelagic marine life. Sea turtles such as the Hawskbill Turtle and the Leatherback Turtle have their nesting grounds around the islands and a common sight in spring and summer. A large population of Nurse sharks lives around the Atlantic dive sites, some of which give protection to pregnant nurse mamas twice a year.

CURRICULUM NOTES :
This year as Scuba Diving is combining with the Science Department, this will broaden the opportunities in Biology and the student’s education. It allows the students to explore the oceans and discover new areas for research and studying. The trip will be closely linked with the science curriculum to support your daughter’s studies as well as developing their Scuba Diving experience and skills.
• Support the Biology curriculum into areas such as classi cation, chemical analysis, ecology and human impacts at GCSE and A level
• Supporting from LV to UV with practical work involved with biodiversity studies with extension eld work in a unique location
• The A Level course includes topics which will be fully supported by practical testing and analysis
• Complete their own personal research to work towards an EPQ project or CREST award
• Gain laboratory skills whilst in the eld with practical testing
• Raising a greater awareness of plastics in oceans by monitoring and surveys at
di erent coral reefs and dive locations
• Complete PADI courses such as Coral Reef Conservation, Fish Identi cation and
Project AWARE to further develop your daughters Scuba Training
• Work with Project AWARE and their dive against debris survey. The data your
daughter will collect is essential and helps build a picture of what is happening under our ocean waves in the world.
We will also be able to run a few sessions in the evenings working on theory skills relating to eld and practical work, planning for future dives whilst on the trip.
Any further questions relating to the curriculum please do contact Catriona Hughes, Head of Biology – [email protected]
