Welcome to the Faculty of Education and Human DevelopmentThe Faculty of Education and Human Development (FEHD) is the main provider of teacher education courses at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), and such, is the largest group of educational researchers and teacher educators in Hong Kong.FEHD stands at the forefront of research into Education and Psychology, and is renowned for its international excellence. Our world-leading research infrastructure, and interdisciplinary and cross-faculty collaborations address the most challenging educational, social, and policy issues.As a diverse faculty of educational professionals from many disciplinary backgrounds, FEHD comprises five departments and four centres. Theme 1 Capacity Building for the Education WorkforceTeacher Well-being Literacy in the GBA and beyond: Drivers, Measure, and Outcomes[SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being]This project investigates teacher well-being literacy across the Greater Bay Area and beyond, focusing on its key drivers, measurement, and impact. Led by Prof Junjun Chen from the Department of Education Policy and Leadership, the study aims to promote educator health and resilience by developing a validated Teacher Well-being Literacy Instrument, identifying influential factors, and examining how literacy mediates well-being outcomes.Building Teacher Educators’ Capacity to Innovate Teaching and Assessment through New Technologies [SDG 4: Quality Education]Led by Dr Zhihong Wan from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, this project aims to empower teacher educators to innovate teaching and assessment using new technologies. The programme targets seven key United Nations SDGs (i.e. SDGs 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 16, 17) through experiential learning workshops and blended-learning sessions designed in partnership with external and international institutions. Students participate as SDG Ambassadors where they learn more about SDGs beyond the classroom. They also engage with student-led SDG initiatives and study trips to Indonesia, Japan, and Beijing.01Reducing Smartphone Overuse for Adolescents with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Randomized Controlled Trial[SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being]Led by Dr Cherry Yum from the Department of Special Education and Counselling and awarded by the Health and Medical Research Fund, this project explores strategies for reducing smartphone overuse in adolescents diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Apply AI Teaching and Classroom Management Skill Practice for Pre-service Teachers in Field Experience [SDG 4: Quality Education] Led by Prof Leung Chi Hung from the Department of Special Education and Counselling and funded by the Quality Education Fund (e-Learning Ancillary Facilities Programme), this project aims to develop an AI platform that integrates EdUHK’s well-established and widely used teaching assessment rubrics with a proprietary AI algorithm. The platform closely observes and assesses teachers’ lesson planning, teaching performance, and classroom management skills by analysing their verbal and non-verbal expressions, and provides performance scores, comprehensive evaluations, and recommendations for improvement to support teachers’ professional development. The project will soon enter the sponsorship phase, during which government funding will be available for publicly funded schools to subscribe to the platform.A Higher Education Hub for Doctoral Education: The Case of the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme[SDG 4: Quality Education] [SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals]Led by Dr Ewan Wright from the Department of Education Policy and Leadership and funded by the Public Policy Research Funding Scheme of the HKSAR Government, this study examines Hong Kong’s development as a higher education hub for doctoral education. In particular, the project represents the first empirical investigation of the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS), which seeks to attract the “best and brightest” students from around the world to Hong Kong. The findings underscore the pivotal role of the HKPFS in recruiting talented students, providing them with worldclass academic training, and serving as a springboard to academic careers globally. The policy recommendations focus on consolidating the achievements of the HKPFS to further advance Hong Kong’s ambitions as a higher education hub.03 0416

It exemplifies how strategic partnerships can transform Led by Dr Lu Jiafang, Associate Professor from the Department of Education Policy and Leadership, and supervised by Prof Allan Walker, Adjunct Research Chair Professor from the same department, the JC InnoPower Education Fellowship is a 15‑month talent and sector development programme initiated and funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust in collaboration with the Center to Support Excellence in Teaching at the Stanford Graduate School of Education. The programme enhances adaptive leadership among school principals and senior educators through exposure to global trends, Chinese Mainland foresight, and local best practices. Through intensive coaching, structured professional learning, and funding to support school-based innovation, it cultivates a cross-sector Community of Practice and strengthens sustainable leadership capacity, contributing to systemic improvement and lasting impact across the local education sector.educational practices and promote equitable, inclusive higher education. 2. Health and Well-beingTo promote holistic well-being and mental health for all, FEHD research emphasises health and well-being which aims to improve quality of life across different age groups. These studies contribute valuable insights into promoting mental health and emotional resilience in diverse populations.Highlighted projectHighlighted projectReducing Loneliness among Older Adults through Enhancing Positive Affect : A Randomized Controlled Trial with Ecological Momentary AssessmentsNap Right: A Longitudinal Day-to-Day Investigation of Bidirectional SleepMood Associations in Young Adults with Subclinical Insomnia, Depression, and AnxietyLed by Prof Jiang Da from the Department of Special Education and Counselling, this project addresses the global trends of aging populations and loneliness. It tests the effectiveness of two brief psychosocial interventions designed to reduce loneliness among older adults in Hong Kong. The study aims to fill significant gaps in intervention research by providing both theoretical and methodological insights, and by developing a comprehensive model to understand how, when, where, and for whom these interventions are most Led by Prof Esther Lau from the Department of Psychology, this study explores the complex relationship between napping, nighttime sleep, and mood in young adults aged 18 to 25 who experience mild insomnia, depression, and anxiety symptoms. Utilising self-reports, actigraphy watches, and electroencephalography (EEG) devices, the research aims to maximise benefits and minimise potential harms of napping for individuals with varying sleep and mood problems. Supported by the Health and Medical Research Fund, this project seeks to inform better sleep hygiene practices among young adults.effective. These initiatives exemplify our dedication to integrating cutting-edge technology into education for inclusive and effective learning.Highlighted projectHighlighted projectSocial Robot for English Language Learning among Young Learners Online Learning Platform Providing Quality AI-enabled Educational Resources to Students from LowIncome FamiliesLed by Prof Susanna Yeung from the Department of Psychology, this project developed an AI-powered social robot, “Joey,” to enhance oral English language skills among kindergarten and primary school students. The robot offers multi-sensory, personalised learning experiences focused on storytelling, interactivity, and emotional engagement, benefiting both typical learners Led by Dr Kevin Yung from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, this initiative created an online platform offering high-quality, AI-enabled educational resources for students from low-income backgrounds. Building on earlier successes—such as hosting 5,000 teaching videos and integrating a ChatGPT-powered Q&A forum—the platform aims to bridge educational gaps and provide accessible learning tools. The project is a collaboration with Principal Chan Free Tutorial World and is funded by the Shang Sin Chun Tong Charitable Foundation.and those with special educational needs. Future enhancements will include features like slower speech and enlarged text to support students with special needs. Funded by the Innovation and Technology Fund for Better Living, the project received a Special Award and a Gold Medal at the Silicon Valley International Invention Festival.20

NeuroscienceOur neuroscience research aims to understand and improve cognitive and emotional functioning through innovative neurotechnology, so as to advance knowledge of the human mind and its potential. These efforts advance our understanding of the brain and open new avenues for therapeutic interventions.Highlighted projectHighlighted projectHybrid EEG-fNIRS Neurofeedback Platform for Brain Training for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder Alleviating Subthreshold Depression Symptoms with Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS)Led by Dr Michael Yeung from the Department of Psychology and supported by the Innovation and Technology Support Programme Seed Fund, this project developed a hybrid neurofeedback platform that combines EEG and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to improve cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functions in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The integrated system offers a comprehensive understanding of brain health at a lower cost, making it suitable for community-wide application. The project plans to incorporate machine learning algorithms to create personalised training programmes and aims to collaborate with schools and healthcare providers to expand its reach. The platform has received multiple international awards, including gold medals at major invention exhibitions.Led by Dr Nichol Wong from the Department of Psychology and supported by the Health and Medical Research Fund, this project addresses the high prevalence of subthreshold depression—characterised by mild depressive symptoms such as loneliness and low mood—in the general population. The study evaluates the effectiveness of multisession, personalised tDCS protocols to enhance psychosocial functioning and reduce depressive symptoms.
