AGENT’S Spotlight

MR S. MALAIYARASAN

FOUNDER OF ASIA ACE AGENCY SDN BHD

8

Edited by Cheow J-Sern Throughout 30 years of his life with Tokio Marine Life
& Lim Chui Ling, Agency Insurance Malaysia, Mr S. Malaiyarasan has gained more
Planning & Support experience than most would in their careers.

During the course of his eventful career, many questions were asked by his
agents, his clients and staff of Tokio Marine: Where did he first start? Were
there financial difficulties in the beginning? What obstacles has he gone
through? Were there any shortcomings that he had to face and if so, how?
What has he done in order to succeed?

Despite all these questions, one stands out the most,

“Was it worth it?”

Recounting his tale from nearly 3 decades ago, Malaiyarasan has chosen to
start his collection of memories from a significant date, July 1st, 1994. He had
made an overnight decision to become a full-time insurance agent, stopping
all private coaching classes he had ran in a tuition centre since a year before
that. Despite receiving his main source of income from teaching & tutoring,
Malaiyarasan felt that he and his family deserved better, and so he took a leap
of faith by deciding to become an insurance agent.

Being a life insurance agent is no walk in the park as Malaiyarasan soon
found out. There wasn’t a guaranteed monthly salary; commissions from life
insurance were measly that came to be about less than RM1,000; and there
was always a possibility that there weren’t enough clients. Without having
the proper guidance and life insurance background, Malaiyarasan decided
to step-up his game by learning everything about the life insurance industry
from scratch. He toiled day and night, sacrificing all of his interests, rest,
entertainment and even family time.

He read, studied and applied any reading materials that he could come across;
he created and regulated his own system and set of guidelines for his future
agency; he even initiated the tradition of an Annual Conference & Award
Presentation Dinner among many in a continuous list. The accumulation
of small, consistent efforts resulted in an impressive income of RM56,000
for Malaiyarasan at the end of his 1st year as an insurance agent, a truly
impressive accomplishment back in those days.

9

AGENT’S Spotlight

The journey was far from a bed of roses. Headwinds soon came. New
OCC guidelines were introduced, resulting in reduction of commissions, the
pullback of high recognition awards and the cancellation of overseas trips.
Many of his agents soon resigned, and Malaiyarasan had to come up with
an innovative plan due to these unforeseen circumstances. Knowing that the
shortage of manpower would be detrimental to his agency, he focused his
efforts on recruiting more agents to drive sales higher.

Some have loyally remained by his side until today. His persistence and
commitment to his agents and his company earned him a promotion to
become the youngest District Manager (now known as Agency Manager)
in the year 1998. While countless other opportunities had attempted to
poach Malaiyarasan to venture into other forms of side businesses, he had
unwaveringly rejected them all as he held firm to his belief, “Choose one path
and stick to it until you succeed.” And that was what he did.

In time, Malaiyarasan started receiving the Top 5 Agency award nationwide,
his first time being in the year 2006. Having received this award, he envisioned
that he could go further in not only being a top agent himself, but to nurture
agents who would become Champions. Over the next few years, Malaiyarasan
produced agents of the highest calibre, namely but not limited to Mdm
Jayakumari (his wife), Ms Vanasundari, Mr Nijamuddeen, Mr Poovaneswaran,
and Ms Kayalvili all of whom he had moulded to be successful leaders in the
life insurance industry.

While Malaiyarasan developed and brought his agency to ever-increasing
heights, he was never discouraged by healthy competition among other
agencies. Having his champion position snagged away by other agencies

only motivated him further to claim back his title. He decided that his ultimate

goal was to break his own company’s record by securing the Mega Agency

Title. Malaiyarasan achieved this goal in 2013. Asia Ace Agency became
the very first agency under TMLM to secure the position of Mega Agency
Title, while Malaiyarasan accomplished an individual award at the same time
as first Mega Agency Manager. With his dedication and perseverance, he

remembers the first time he attained this double success fondly until today.

Year after year, Asia Ace Agency has secured and hoisted the Champion
Mega Agency position consistently. Asia Ace Agency ended year 2019 in a
spectacular fashion when they achieved the Grand Mega Agency Title with
a grand total of RM 10,000,000 in sales, thus sealing his position as the
Godfather of Asia Ace Agency. In his own words, Malaiyarasan would like to
share his motto to the entire agency force of Tokio Marine Life and hopes that
agents would adopt it too:
“I Believe, I Change, I Conquer.”

As we come to a close with Malaiyarasan’s memories and experiences, we
at Tokio Marine Life could not help but ask the very same question we asked
at the beginning…
