THE DANGERS OF COLD STRESS 202 JACKETS & COATS

KEEPING WORKERS WARM THE COLD STRESS EQUATION 204 HI-VIS RAINWEAR
206 OVERPANTS
With jackets, liners and pullovers, the principles of thermal Low Temperature + Wind Speed + Wetness = Injuries & Illness
energy are applied to ensure the worker stays as warm as HI-VIS
possible, taking into consideration their environment. When the body is unable to warm itself, serious cold related
illnesses and injuries may occur, and permanent tissue damage
• T he wind resistance of the outer shell is critical, as it helps and death may result.
minimize the entrance of the denser cold air which would take
the place of the warm air that is layered close to the body. • H ypothermia can occur when land temperatures are above
freezing or water temperatures are below 98.6°F / 37°C.
• A dding lofted or fleece insulation provides a layer that traps the
warmer air beneath the shell and helps keep out the cold. • Cold related illnesses can slowly overcome a person who has
been chilled by low temperatures brisk winds, or wet clothing.
• Keeping dry also allows the worker to stay as warm as possible.
Whether it’s precipitation or water penetrating from the outside, or WIND SPEED (MPH)
sweat generated by the worker, moisture can accelerate the effects 0 10 20 30 40
of the cold environment and restrain the insulation’s efficiency.
30° F / -1.1° C
In order to stay warm it is important that work garments perform
and remain adaptive to the work environment, activity, and duration. 20° F / -6.7° C LITTLE DANGER
10° F / -12.2° C (CAUTION)
• T he effectiveness of the outer shell is the first consideration. 0° F / -17.8° C
High quality outer shells provide the desired resistance against Freezing to Exposed Flesh within
wind and water, but also allow sweat to evaporate. 1 Hour

• In extremely cold conditions, it is better to dress in layers as -10° F / -23.3° C DANGER
opposed to wearing a jacket or coat with very thick lofts. The -20° F / -28.9° C Freezing to Exposed Flesh within
thicker lofts will restrict movement, which in turn means less -30° F / -34.4° C
body heat is generated. The proper insulation combined with 1 Minute
fleece sweaters and wicking under-layers will provide optimal
protection while remaining functional for the worker. -40° F / -40° C EXTREME DANGER
-50° F / -45.6° C Freezing to Exposed Flesh within
• T he ability to remove layers and/or jacket linings becomes
critical when there is a wide temperature differential. This will 30 seconds
help reduce the risk of excessive wetness from sweating while
still providing adequate cold protection in this environment JACKETS & COATS

CHOOSING A MATERIAL

There are various materials to consider when choosing the best
thermal protection for your environment:

• 300 Denier Rip-Stop Shell Material – durable and tear
resistant material that provides wind and water resistance.

• 300 Denier Shell Material – durable material that provides
wind and water resistance

• 280 gram Polyester Fleece Insulation – a versatile fabric that
provides warmth and quick drying properties

• H i-Loft Polyester Fiberfill Insulation – a built-in insulation that
resists water absorption and is quilted to resist migration

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FR AND AR 210 FR/AR SHIRTS

FLAME RESISTANT (FR) DUAL CERTIFIED PROTECTION 211 FR/AR SWEATSHIRTS
212 FR/AR HI-VIS VESTS
Flame Resistant garments earn their designation because they Dual Certified means that the materials have been tested and 213 FR/AR CLOTHING
are made of fabrics that are inherently resistant to or are treated to certified to meet both the NFPA 70E (Arc Flash Protection) and 214 DUAL-CERTIFIED CLOTHING
be resistant to catching fire when exposed directly to flame. The the NFPA 2112 (Flash Fire Protection) standards. The NFPA 216 ARC FLASH PROTECTION KITS
material will resist ignition and/or self-extinguish when ignited, and 2112-2012 requires third party certification of the garment, and 220 ARC FLASH HEAD GEAR
they will not melt. FR Garments also create a thermal barrier to help all PIP NFPA 2112-2012 certified garments are UL certified. All 222 ARC FLASH ACCESSORIES
protect the wearer’s skin when exposed to direct heat energy and PIP Dual-Certified apparel are identified as such.
may minimize the amount of 2nd and 3rd degree burns incurred.
FR fabrics include: FLAME RESISTANT &
ARC RATED CLOTHING
• Modacrylics, Aramids and Para-aramids which are among
the inherently flame resistant fabrics. They will not lose those 800-262-5755 / www.pipusa.com 209
characteristics through wear or laundering.

• Treated Fabrics, such as cotton and cotton blends, require
FR treatment to achieve self-extinguishing properties. This
treatment will eventually fade with washing but, if the garment is
properly cared for, the treatment can last the life of the garment.
FR treated cotton and cotton blends provide a more
comfortable and affordable solution.

ARC RATED (AR)

Arc Rated (AR) garments help to provide flame and thermal
protection from exposure to an electrical arc flash. AR fabrics and
garments are designed and treated to help limit the exposure and
burn percentage as a result of an electrical arc flash incident.

The NFPA introduced the new term “AR (Arc Rated)” to help
identify the critical difference between AR and FR (Flame Resistant)
clothing as it applies to Arc Flash Protection. Remember: All AR
clothing is flame resistant, however not all FR clothing is
rated for arc flash protection.

There are many variables to consider when selecting AR protective
clothing. Most importantly the employer must perform a Hazard
Risk Analysis for the workplace to identify risks and set the
appropriate boundaries. The results of this analysis will then direct
the employer into the level of protection needed.

Each AR garment is given an Arc Thermal Performance Value
(ATPV) or Energy Break-open Threshold (EBT). This value
represents the level of protection the garment is tested to provide
when exposed to variable levels of heat in an electric arc flash.
Higher levels of protection typically requires thicker and/or additional
layers. The ATPV or EBT of the garment should be equal to or
greater than the energy level of the work area as determined by the
Hazard Risk Analysis.

The NFPA 70E should be reviewed thoroughly and regularly
to ensure compliance and to be aware of any revisions or
updates as they occur.
