CRIMSON COACHES

Varsity Head Coach - Nick Schroeder

Coach Schroeder is looking forward to his 12th year as the head varsity basketball coach and 14th year of
coaching with the Maple Grove Crimson basketball program. Previously, he spent three years coaching with the
Osseo Senior High boys basketball team and two years coaching at Northern State University in South Dakota.
He played college basketball for the Wolves’ legendary coach Don Meyer, and earned both his Bachelor’s and
Master’s Degrees in Physical Education, Health, and Coaching from NSU.
Coach Schroeder is a Physical Education and Health teacher at Maple Grove Senior High. He is also the Crimson
freshman football team’s wide receivers coach and a JV softball coach. Nick and his wife Shanna have twin 11
year old boys, Blake and Brody, and a 7 year old son named Bennett.
Coach Schroeder is a 7X Section Coach of the Year and 7X state tournament head coach; with two state semifinal
appearances.
Career coaching record: 225-88 (.718)

Varsity Assistant - Ryan Smolarek

Coach Smolarek begins his 12th year working with the varsity and JV teams and 14th as a Crimson basketball
coach. He teaches computer science, 3D modeling, video game design, and digital photography at Maple Grove
Senior High.
Coach Smolarek graduated from Eastview High School in Apple Valley, Minnesota. His favorite Lightning Basketball
memories include playing HORSE with Coach Maupin (had to use the glass), beating defending state champion
Tartan on the road, and attempting to jack up a shot every trip down the floor. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree
from the University of Minnesota, and Master’s Degree from St. Mary’s University.
Ryan lives in Brooklyn Park with his wife Melissa, 6 year old daughter Lowen, 4 year old son Nixon, and 2 year old
daughter Reed. The family is working hard on a 2-3 matchup zone.

Varsity Assistant - Matt Christenson

Coach Christenson begins his 11th year as a member of the Crimson coaching staff. He is a 2009 graduate of
Maple Grove Senior High, and started for the Crimson as a junior and senior. He spent the 2011-12 season
playing for Central Lakes College in Brainerd, MN as a key contributor for the Raiders’ nationally-ranked team.
Matt lives in Osseo with his girlfriend Nikki. He is excited to help the Crimson raise a championship banner!

JV Head Coach - Jared Martinson

Coach Martinson begins his first season as a member of the Crimson coaching staff.
A 2016 graduate of Maple Grove High School, he played varsity basketball for Coach Schroeder as a junior
and senior. He also played varsity football. After graduation, he played two seasons of college hoops at Bethel
University under former Royals coach Doug Novak, and holds a journalism degree from Bethel.
Jared is also the Crimson varsity football tight ends coach, a building ESP at Maple Grove High School, and covers
high school basketball for Prep Hoops Minnesota.
He currently lives in Maple Grove with his wife, Annie, and their cat that acts like a dog, KJ.

Sophmore Head Coach - Michael Haus

Coach Haus teaches Special Education at Maple Grove Senior High where he has worked the past 25 years. His
basketball coaching experience includes seven years with the freshman program, six years at the varsity level,
and this will be his 12th year with the sophomore team.
Coach Haus graduated from Sleepy Eye High School where he played football, basketball, and baseball. Post high
school he played baseball at Southwest State in Marshall, Minnesota. After enrolling in the Armed Forces, Coach
Haus graduated from St. Cloud State University, where he received both his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees.
Michael lives in Maple Grove and has three children: Mason, Jett, and Brooklyn.

Sophmore Assistant - Adam Spurrell

Coach Spurrell begins his 11th year with the boys basketball program at Maple Grove Senior High.
Coach Spurrell grew up in Amery, Wisconsin and dominated small town sports in the late 90’s. He earned his
Bachelor’s Degree at St. Cloud State University and completed his Master’s Degree at St. Mary’s University. He
teaches math at Osseo Middle School.
Coach Spurrell is the Crimson varsity football team’s Defensive Coordinator, and an assistant coach for the Crim-
son baseball team.
Adam lives in Rogers with three lovely ladies, his wife Jessica, and daughters Anna (15) and Brooke (14).

Freshman A Coach - Grant Kaufman

Coach Kaufman is excited to begin his high school coaching career with the Crimson program this season. He
spent the last two seasons working with 2025 OMGBA hoopers as both a head coach and an assistant.
He graduated from MGSH in 2013 after playing two years of varsity basketball for Coach Schroeder. Grant went
on to play a year at Waldorf College and a year at Saint John’s University before graduating in 2017.
Grant lives with his wife, Ashley, in Brooklyn Park, and works as a business systems analyst for Graco.

Freshman A Coach - Ethan Magstadt

Coach Magstadt is a 2008 Maple Grove Senior High graduate and varsity football, basketball, and track letter win-
ner. Coach Magstadt graduated from the University of North Dakota after a 5-year football career for the Fighting
Hawks.
This is his 9th year teaching math in the district and 6th at MGSH. He is also the Crimson freshman football
team’s head coach. Coach Magstadt is a great mentor to future Crimson varsity players, although he unofficially
owns records for career fouls and missed dunks.
Ethan lives in Maple Grove with his wife Elle (an Osseo graduate), 2 year old son Myrick, newborn son Otto, and
dog Chuck.
