Reflections 2020

Annual Report

Warm greetings of a happier and healthier new year to everyone. It is a great pleasure of mine to be
Unravelling 2019-2020 and sharing with you the glimpses of the year gone by, celebrating our

institution’s successful 16 years in the realm of imparting young crop, then and now, with the
same passion and commitment as always, even in the face of changes
and challenges.

SPS has been a precursor of change, on a mission to
inspire, empower and enable in uplifting the
quality of education.

So, we adapted to the new normal early on and
created a culture of collaboration with all the
stakeholders in education. In keeping with our

tradition, we began the year as usual with
sharing the school vision, the curriculum,
school systems, teaching methodologies and

the co-scholastic activities in virtual
orientations with parents.

The teachers, who are exemplary role models for
students, were tasked with special responsibilities. From attending and
organizing webinars initially to learning the latest skills, doing video conferencing, and
carrying out training programs along with doing regular classes online and offline, they adapted to the
new normal swiftly and smoothly. Additionally, under the aegis of SPDP that is Sagar Professional
Development Program, new initiatives were undertaken to train and groom teachers from all SPS
branches. Team SPS GN presented informative sessions on the Book Review Series of Giju Bhai, the
visionary educator’s book on Bhasha Shikshan to guide the teachers to teach languages in the most
interesting and effective way.

Thus, from acquiring actionable insights on the use of technology to blended learning, learner-centric
pedagogies, teacher-student engagement and online assessments, we moved from strength to strength
and emerged stronger than the challenges we were faced with. Our efforts bore fruits and nine students
of SPS GN made us proud by making their place in the top most coveted institutes of India.

I am also glad to share that our alumni have been making a niche for themselves and some are placed in
positions of distinction in India and abroad. To further our ties and connectivity, this year we began with a
fresh proposition, Alma Shine, with the support and collaboration of students. The past inspired the
future through the present when our alumni took webinars on career opportunities showing the path to
juniors.

In a first, a series of online webinars and sessions on career counselling was undertaken by our career
counselling cell, UDAAN throughout the year. Various myths related to different career choices were
busted and dilemmas were resolved.

Today's world has become a global village and celebration of important days, events and festivals
showcase the acceptance of this cultural diversity, solidarity and patriotism. Assemblies were regularly
organised, as always, in the junior wing to acquaint children with these values.

54

The virtual celebration of each important event as per the school diary, be it Foundation Day,
Teacher’s Day, Independence Day or imp festivals has been instrumental in reinforcing the value of
responsibility, to the society and the world at large in Sagarites.

We realize that it is in the little things of life that real happiness resides. Taking children’s mental and
physical well-being into consideration, SPS GN not only planned online dance, music, sports and library
classes but also a structured Virtual Summer Camp at home to promote growth, learning of a new skill
and exploring one’s own talents. This online camp had all the magic of a summer camp, including music,
dance, sports, yoga and other activities, all within the limitations of the lockdown, within the comfort of
one’s home.

From time to time, the school organized a rich and diverse array of literary activities such as Mock
Parliament, Declamations, Group Discussions, Poetry Recitation, Short Story Writing, Quiz
Contests, Hindi Diwas, Spellathon and many more round the year to give impetus to language and
promote awareness. Furthermore, in accordance with NEP, we have also introduced a healthy mix of
languages at the foundational level in a bid to promote proficiency in languages, a vital skill in the
increasingly interdependent and connected world.

A Reading Week, as per CBSE directives, packed with multitudinous activities was organized across
Classes I -XII.

Lockdown Tales, our maiden e book consisting of expressions of Sagarites- students, teachers and
parents during the lockdown period in the form of articles, images and videos was released online.

In order to keep our Sagarites fit and healthy we shared videos on diff exercises. Students uploaded
videos showcasing their talent in sports to mark Sports Day. The Junior Sagarites enjoyed activities like
Scavenger Hunt, Carpet Race, Child and Parent Activities and much more.

The Senior children too had their share of the fun with events designed especially for them. National
sports day was celebrated online with gusto wherein Yogathon and Growthalon were organized for
different classes.

Fit India Freedom Run- The Virtual Marathon was organized from September 30, 2020 to October
2, 2020 to encourage fitness and to improve mental health. Students and the staff of SPSGN participated
enthusiastically in the event.

At SPS our endeavour is to equip our Sagarites with the latest innovations and interventions in school
education along with the right moral conscience to navigate through life and its unforeseen challenges.
With hope round the corner in the garb of the new vaccine, we hope and pray to see things return back to
normalcy soon.

Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come,
whispering 'it will be happier'

English is the language of Class. All men are equal before English

“If you have the words, there's always a chance that you'll find the way.”

It'd been rough this year. The stock market has tanked, a recession looked likely, and the world faced its
first major pandemic. Nevertheless, many philosophers and deep thinkers have observed that every crisis

has a silver lining. I understand that it's hard for everyone, but one cannot give in to
emotions... We have drawn lessons from the current crisis and
worked on overcoming it. What I feel is that
Language is a medium for interaction, exchanging
ideas, understanding feelings of others, and for
the development of the human race existing on
this planet as it has the greatest healing power.

The effective use of language is powerful and
when practiced and improved becomes more
useful throughout our lives. It helps us in

sailing through difficult times as it gives a vent
to our emotions. English is a powerful
medium for drawing attention to values,

beliefs and attitudes that are life-giving.
Because we are aware of this, our vision as
a department is to use our lessons to inform, restore or build
foundations that will give each pupil a sound basis for living the life that God has
given. Crises are part of life. Everybody has to face them, and it doesn't make any difference what the
crisis is. It is our wish that by the time a pupil’s school life has come to an end, he or she will be enabled
and empowered to realize the God-given potential that each one has within.

It is our goal to imbue in all our students, including students for whom English is their second language,
the idea that understanding all forms of literature and equating it to real life, as a result of practiced
reading and writing - is not just a school requirement.

At SPS our emphasis is on teaching language used in meaningful and often multilingual contexts. For the
majority of our learners, our aim is to achieve fundamental competence in the target language.

Under the shaky circumstances due to the pandemic retaining a sense of normality for learners and their
teachers has been crucial. COVID-19 presented education and learning with a unique challenge. Making
sure that learning never stops is imperative even when the world has paused, we have been extremely
prompt in adopting measures that keep the education going.

From March 15-16th, the curriculum has
gone virtual. Not only senior secondary,
even pre-primary, primary and secondary
have followed the mode of online education.
to enable our dear Students as well as our
teachers to uncover their hidden talents & to
empower them we made our children and
teachers ready to face all ordeals and remain
positive by organizing a plethora of events
throughout this year starting with the
melodious rendition of self-composed
poems by the students of Classes III- V. They

58

experienced the beauty of expression, thoughts, From the Sagar News Desk
feelings, rhyme and rhythm in a unique and the first
of its kind, through the Online Poem Recitation
Competition, named- My Lockdown Rhymes.
The melodious renditions by the budding poets
presented the positive side of this lockdown period
and gave a message to remain safe by following the
rules and staying at home.

Giving a creative expression and enhancing the level
of self-confidence in Sagarites, a virtual Inter-class
English Extempore Competition- Mindful Ad-
Lib was organized for the students of classes VI-VII in
which the students participated whole-heartedly. This
was an impromptu exercise, which tested students'
ability to think, speak and inculcate the art of public
speaking within them. We at SPS nurture our
Sagarites to be expressive and self-reliant and as guides believe that they must understand that to
progress we need to offer better alternatives. instead of complaining about the current state of affairs, we
need to think of better options”.

Sagarites of IX-XII spoke their minds for an online contest on oratory skills over current affairs named,
My Outlook Matters in which they expressed their opinion on a variety of themes like “Racism and the
world today”, “Why should India ban Chinese products”, “New Education Policy”, India -Japan
Relationship”, “Towards clean energy economy” and many more.

Our endeavor is to create critical and creative thinkers, so as to improve student’s ability to think critically
and develop their analytical skills, an Inter-Section Group Discussion Competition was organized
for the students of classes IV & V. All the participants from different sections of class IV ensured that the
topic Whether Digital Education has taken over Traditional Education was discussed from a wide
range of perspectives. Students of class V also expressed themselves efficiently on the topic, Online
Education, Can we thrive in this Virtual World? For instilling the 21st-century skills it is must to
make our children globally aware and so to inculcate the habit of reading newspaper among students, an
Inter Section Newspaper Reading Competition at the virtual platform in which students of Classes I
to III participated and read the Sports, Political, National and Education section.

Teachers are the trendsetters and to empower them we have organized a workshop on Integrating
New Teaching Strategies in English. The webinar apprised the teachers about the integration of
Experiential Learning, Artificial Intelligence and Arts in their teaching the process as per the CBSE
directives so that they can use these skills in creating better learners who are future-ready.

Besides this, we had an ample number of class activities be it Extempore, Declamation, Storytelling,
Debates, Ted talks, MUNS, Spellathons, Group discussions, all woven around the common
themes of building up resilience and perseverance in our Sagarites at all levels believing that the skills you
learn, the traits you develop, and the experience you get to strengthen your ability and become part of
you, part of your work ethic, and part of your abilities.

We are driven by the motto to strive hard with commitment and dedication, to serve the strategic information
requirements of the academic community on a continual basis. A novel step in this direction was our Digital
Library so that our children could get access to all the books whether academic, reference, fiction, story
books, study material and text books. So that there is no hindrance in their learning.

59

The year gone by gave us a life lesson that: “Whether you’re facing a
global or personal crisis- or a mix of both - building resilience can help you
cope with stress, overcome adversity and enjoy the better days to come”.

Our budding poets imbibed it in the true sense and gave
expression to their emotions through beautiful poems that got
published by One Pound Publishers, a renowned publishing
agency that had published their poems in their book titled
The Unadulterated Tales. Gavish Lohat, Syed Izhaan Hussain,
Meera Dawle, Jatin Adwani and Yashika Ramani were the
chosen few of Class XII whose poems have been selected by the
panel and featured in the final copy of the book, on Amazon and
Flipkart.

The grandiosity of time Irrational fears surround me
In the darkness of this night, Insecurities are just I weave
There's still a hope for staying alive. Fighting with a demon within

In these ordeal times, Sickened by my outside
There's a surreal belief of life being benign. Over thinking is my only pill
The emotional drill heavy hits
In those memories of us stumbling, Tired of holding essentials
Roaming laughing, admiring, clicking I crave inner peace and care
Each other over the streets and in the Dusky days and violent skies
Rain pelting down from the hell
Glories of poetry and Streets trapped in utter darkness
undeniable need of humanity, Losing count of wynorrific people
There is love. And there is life. Every other body consumed in sadness
There is hope. And there is joy. Every other body suffocating in misery
There is a longing for bilingual Mankind losing all it's worth
Ambiguity of understanding. Mankind leaving the world in pain
And a belief of happiness returning
Home when people seem infantile. Meera Dawle
There's yearning for authenticity of Class XII Science
Our mere existence in times of fortitude,
There is love as well as pain.
And happiness together with

The existence of grimace.
And it's the law of life,
The grandiosity of time.
And it's the law of love,
The expedition of time.

The only way to Mathematics is to do Mathematics

Mathematics possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty – a beauty cold and austere, like that of a
sculpture.

The study of maths is underpinned by finding reasoning and truth in the world and
universe that surrounds us and in the year of the pandemic,
Mathematics emerged as a powerful tool to combat
the challenge and overcome difficulties. It is known
that the world is interconnected and mathematics
in everyday life shows these connections and inter
relationships. The young learners at SPS GN are
in the right direction to practice these
mathematical skills to make significant
contributions to the global community and to
solve complex problems in this complexity
ridden world. The global era will demand the
mathematical skills of its people. The
Sagarties are provided with the wherewithal
to be proficient in these skills.

In the first phase of the pandemic when the whole world was looking
for solutions to this problem, students at SPS GN were trained to develop the core
mathematical skill – Problem solving. A mathematical and logical reasoning quiz competition, The
Miraculous Mathletes was organized for students of Classes VI and VII which not only boosted in them
the skill of logical reasoning and mathematical ability but also developed in them the skill of divergent
thinking. An instinctive tendency to approach a problem in different ways was promoted through this
competition.

It was amid the pandemic year that it was very well
realized that problems unlock doors of new
innovations and creativity. At this time, Mathematics
emerged as an indispensable tool to develop
creativity and imaginative thinking in students. Six
talented Sagarites brought laurels to the school by
showcasing their exemplary performance in the
Mathletics competition organized by Manaskriti
School, Faridabad. Tanishq Singhal of Class VII won a
gold medal after competing with students from
schools across the nation. Apart from this, many
students had participated enthusiastically in the
BRICSMATH Competition which aims at
developing creative thinking, intelligence and spatial
thinking. Many students have received certificates of
achievement in this international online competition
that brings together 5 million children from different
countries on a common platform.

This pandemic has taught all of us the significance of
necessary computational skills and Impact Predicting.

62

Mathematics did not take a back seat in this domain.
It progressed as a discipline which enhances mental
ability and also promoted the learning of necessary
computational skills. Many young Sagarites won
accolades in a Mental Math Competition
organized by the UCMAS on 8 Sep, 2020. Kartik Kadka
of Class IV E won the second runner up prize in the
state level competition. Vinayak Khadka of Class IV E
secured 9th position in the state. Parth Gupta of Class
V D has secured 11th position and Yatiraj Singh of
Class VIII B secured 18th position in MP. Along with
this, Sagarites of Classes III to V participated with
zeal and enthusiasm in the intra school competition,
Tech Intellect which was a great learning
experience for all participants and viewers.

Another learning outcome of the pandemic was to think Out of the Box. To propel the growth of learning
outside the textbook boundaries, a new initiative was taken by
the Mathematics department of SPS GN in the name of
INFINITICS– The Mathematical Series which aims at
developing mathematical aptitude by posing a variety of
questions encouraging logical and critical thinking in students.

Now comes a period of hope and relief with the supply of vaccines
of coronavirus which could happen only with the application of
learning through multiple trials and observations. This is indeed
the most powerful role of Mathematics- to apply the learnings to
real life situations. To empower with this important skill, students
of Class IX to XI made and exhibited real life based models
through an online competition Spectrum – Mathematics.
Through this competition, students applied their conceptual
knowledge of mathematics in solving real life situations and
received appreciation for their new, innovative and intriguing
models which were not only educative but also creative and were
simply fun to learn from.

Last but not the least, this year of the pandemic proved as a store of unlimited learning experiences for
teachers. Teachers of the mathematics department attended training sessions for effective online classes,
CBSE handbooks and art integration projects. It was all because of the learning attitude of teachers that
the students of the school are empowered at every step and in every domain of mathematics. Further
more, in keeping with our initiative of SPS to empower the trainers, Dr. Manavi Arora conducted five CBSE
Training Session for teacher addressing aspect like Bloom’s Taxonomy and the importance of various
teaching aids in Maths. The test of a teacher’s skill lies is how well the knowledge has been received.

We Keep Moving Forward, Opening New Doors and Doing New Things,

Because We Are Curious And Curiosity Keeps Leading Us To New Paths.

Science is a way of thinking much more than it is a body of
knowledge

“ It’s not about scaling new heights of success; It’s about best to suffer so the rest shall prosper! ”

This is exactly what happened in the Science Department where a few took the risk to
pave a smooth way for their fellow mates to scale new heights.

Innovation and creativity percolate down to others
when the Principal of the School Ms. Alpa Prabhu,
herself portrays an exemplary scientific mindset.

Integration of STEAM as a Cross Curricular Approach

“The skill that sustains livelihood and which is praised by all should be fostered and protected for your own
development”

STEAM is the abbreviation of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics and its inclusion in school
curriculum is going to be a great milestone in developing the personality of students and making them self-reliant,
independent and skill oriented. This paper was an opportunity to unravel a research done a few years back in the
Academic Session 2016-17 with a group of twenty two interested and enthusiastic students. The research
endeavor was titled The Nachiketa Project, after the famous mythological character, known for his inquisitiveness.
The study of The Nachiketa Project revealed that academic performance of students can be improved by its
implementation. Research work is suitably supported with relevant data for reference purposes. The analogy of
The Nachiketa Project and Integration of STEAM is very interesting. Both the models ultimately result into the
development of skill, collaboration and empowerment of our students. Both the techniques to develop the
personality of our students are in accordance with our new National Education Policy 2020. A maiden work of
research, this paper also enlightens how Integration of STEAM can be oriented in Schools. The exploration also
attempts to demonstrate integration in Middle School Curriculum. The feasibility of Integration of STEAM with cross
curricular approach would make students critical thinkers and analyzers.

It is well said - Being industrious is the pride of humans and this can be achieved effectively by Integrating STEAM in
schools.

Can We Deliver STEAM through Virtual Classes?

Learning is the main object of every institution, parent, and teacher. For that, different approaches, strategies are
being used to achieve a maximum level of learning. Behaviorism, constructivism, cognitive, experiential, activity-
based learning, hands-on experience are some of them. Then in 2001 STEAM education was introduced among all
of us. It is an interdisciplinary approach. STEAM is a pedagogical strategy towards learning that utilizes Science,
Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics as admittance spikes for overseeing student inquiry, dialogue,
critical and analytical thinking. In the year 2020, everyone faced a challenging situation and forced to accept a new
normal. We went with the best feasible way to recommence learning through a Virtual platform. Another stressful
situation was to have a virtual education through STEAM. Today, it is very natural to use a virtual platform for the
teaching-learning process as it is a new normal for everyone. One should be knowledgeable about STEAM and its
benefits. Outlining plays a significant part in what you are going to present in the upcoming lesson how you are
going to transfer and think out of the box for alternatives to correlate it with a different domain and make students
knowledgeable regarding their application part. Select innovative activities to relate them with real-life situations.
Various tasks were assigned to our learners so that learning can become more efficient and relatable to real life. The
use of blended learning flipped learning and involving experiential learning as the best tool to incorporate STEAM.
Despite so much difficulty, everyone endured up mutually and acquired, adopted, and accepted the new normal
with full zeal. According to the strategies and approaches practiced during the virtual classroom in an online mode
working for STEAM, through STEAM, and in STEAM it all made the difference. The level of learning attained is too
intellectual and astounding. STEAM focus on asking and raising the question. If you can help your learners in raising
the question and making them work by themselves you have achieved your half goal.

Nazi Qidwai

Perspective for Integration of STEAM in School Education

“This paper is based on Integration of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) in the
school education system. STEAM will be a new phase for the education system. Where students will get new ways
to work on their ideas & concepts. Not only critical thinking & innovation but they would be able to work on already

68

existing solutions & will give them more defined shape which will open new doors for learning. Implementation of
STEAM plays a very important role for the continuous growth of students' minds. It will also help to resolve the
global issues by using creative ideas of these young buds. As this world is going through a new phase so we should
be coming up with new solutions to save it that can be obtained by rearranging & rebuilding our base that is our
Education System. This will also be creating an attitude of problem solving in students. STEAM is the future of the
school education system. Learning & teaching methodology should be based on STEAM to give it a full success
where the curriculum should be so designed that it uses the STEAM concept productively. Where we need to make
our educators groomed in a way that they can make the coming generation readily available for challenges by
utilizing their best of knowledge & concepts. This paper will help to understand what can be achieved through
STEAM efforts, its need & importance in Indian education system. "

Bringing STEAM Out of the Class into the Community

I never teach my pupils; I only attempt to provide the condition in which they can learn.

-Albert Einstien

Most would agree that students need to become more scientifically literate. However, science- literate students are
not necessarily equipped to confront the complex societal issues that they will encounter as citizens. One way
forward is to engage students in authentic, relevant and meaningful learning activities nested in their school
communities. This important educational innovation can help students become more engaged in learning science,
help them connect their science learning to other subjects also can play a vital role in the progress of the
community, and strengthen both their understanding of science and their capabilities for responsible citizenship in
their community. Historically, the conceptualization of scientific literacy has been an esoteric endeavor.
Nevertheless, pundits agree that increased scientific literacy of students and citizens will have broad societal
benefits. While science career goals are always part of any statements for scientific literacy, democratic and
responsible science citizenship goals are just as important. For instance, there is agreement that proficiency in the
areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEAM) is closely related to a country's capacity in
important sectors of the economy. Without question, society is strengthened when all students, regardless of their
career path, are equipped to learn, evaluate and respond to scientific and technological issues in their community. A
holistic approach also demands that STEAM draw on the contributions of the humanities (such as history and
philosophy), local knowledge systems, aboriginal wisdom, and the wide variety of cultural values.

STEAM Vs Traditional Approaches of Education

Education is a training in critical and logical thinking which helps the coming generation to adapt in the changing
environment. It means enhancing knowledge, giving them good values and realization of self. It influences the
quality of manpower for societal benefits. This paper gives an insight of the ancient education system and ways to
improve the present education system. It highlights the basic structure of ancient education which contributed
quality manpower imbibing moral, social and civic values to the society. The present education system is weighed
down by several reasons as a result of which the outcome is becoming self-centric. This calls for several reforms in
the present education system which can be implemented from ancient education for overall development of
students as a human being. There is undeniably a reason why we today merely tend to follow and not lead in an
unchallenged way as we once did in the past. We, during British Raj, were ridiculed for being oblivious to Science,
Logic, Reason and our education relying just on philosophy and religion. Little known is the fact how advanced
Ancient India was in all fields including Science. This paper highlights the wonders of the past and how we may
tweak our present education system, blindly replicated from the West, to bring back the glories of the past and
make our coming generations lead the world to a better future through their innovative, creative and enlightened
minds and hearts.

Society is the Practioner of Social Science

Sailing through the Pandemic crisis by reimagining the future

When the world feels dangerous, harnessing learning can provide some Last year’s Teachers’ Day had an
even greater significance in the light of the challenges that teachers have faced during the Covid-19
crisis. measure of clarity and perspective.

During the pandemic, we revitalized Social Science
teaching by making the learners acquire knowledge
and skills in an interactive, vibrant environment.
The teaching of Social Sciences Virtually at Sagar
Public School, Gandhi Nagar promoted
experiential learning, adopting methods that
promote creativity, aesthetics, and critical
perspectives, and enabled the Sagarites to
draw relationships between past and present,
and to understand changes taking place in
society.

In order to make the process of learning
participative, in these challenging times
there was a shift from mere imparting information
to debate and discussion and various other range of activities,
replicating the physical classroom learning. This approach to learning kept both the learner
and teacher alive to social realities.

Listed below are the list of the events which added new colors and
flavors to the department throughout the year.

Real Knowledge is to Know the Extent of One's Ignorance

And we, at Sagar Public School believe in empowerment through
awareness. Sagarites are kept abreast of the happenings around
the world to educate, sensitise and inculcate global consciousness
in students and teachers alike. In this regard, the Department had
taken up the initiative of enhancing General Awareness amongst
the Teaching Fraternity, Students and Parents by its Series of mails
on Contemporary Issues. The mails are sent every week along with
a very informative PPT and a link for a quiz to check the level of
awareness.

“Every Child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist
as he grows up.”

-Pablo Picasso Awareness is Bliss

The Social Science Department on 31st August 2020, presented the CBSE manuals under the series of

webinars, Trendsetters in Education.

Sagar Public School, Gandhi Nagar was represented by Ms. Shubha Chakraborty and Ms. Debarati

70

follow Competency based education which would enhance critical thinking, creativity, initiation, self-
direction and other much required 21st century skills.

The objective of AIL highlighted in the discussion is not to promote arts and skills of arts, but to use art as
a tool and medium to teach Social Science.

Different methodologies discussed by them to be incorporated in the daily lesson transactions were
storytelling, dance, music, theatre, virtual media and recitation. Examples from each genre were given
and demonstrated live to the teachers for a better understanding of how to make the classroom more
lively and interesting.

The discussion was concluded with a motive of collaborating art to help the children understand about a
more humane and a creative world through the eyes of Social Science.

“Students are the building blocks of the future of the world and on them depends how the structure of the
world will be.”

We celebrated the World Students’ Day on the 89th birth anniversary of the former and the most loving
President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. He was known for his love for students and focus on promoting
education.

Mock Parliament

To pay obeisance and to honor this great leader, we, along with the Sagarites of Class IX and X staged the

the virtual platform with Sagarites of the Senior Secondary Section. SPS MUN was an academic simulation of
the United Nations where the students played the role of delegates from different countries and attempted to
solve real world issues with the policies and perspectives of their assigned countries. The event aimed at
enhancing speaking, debating and writing skills along with critical thinking, teamwork and leadership
abilities.
It gave them the platform to develop a deeper understanding of the current world issue and the Sagarites
as young delegates debated on the fixation of responsibility of Corona Virus with special emphasis on
China’s opportunist action.
The students learnt how to provide solutions that every nation can endeavor and use to resolve the crisis
and rise in the risk of uniting strength to maintain international peace and security.
"Manpower without unity is not a strength unless it is harmonized and united properly, then it becomes a
spiritual power."
October 31, 2020 the 145th birth anniversary of the ‘Iron Man of India’, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is being
observed as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas across the Nation. This occasion gives us an opportunity to reaffirm
the inherent strength and resilience of our Nation and to withstand the actual and potential threats to the
unity, integrity and security of our country.
In keeping with the tradition, we organized a Pledge Taking Ceremony both in the Online platform and
as well as Offline in the physical enrichment Classes within the school premises.
The Sagarites of the Middle and Senior Section of the school along with the teaching staff showcased their
enthusiastic participation and took the pledge in the spirit of unification and to preserve the unity, integrity
and security of the Nation.

"Democracy is not merely a form of government. It is primarily a mode of associated living, of conjoint
communicated experience. It is essentially an attitude of respect and reverence towards fellow men”
The Constitution Day also known as Samvidhan Divas is celebrated every year on November 26th to
commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India. As a part of the celebrations this year, we
organized the reading of the Preamble in the virtual classes which aimed at highlighting and reiterating
the values and principles enshrined in the Constitution.
The Sagarites of Class VI-XII showcased their enthusiastic participation by reading the Preamble with
pride and took a pledge reaffirming their faith and commitment to uphold the value and ideology of our
Constitution.
The Department of Social Science through its various activities and teaching methodologies in the
pandemic not only provided relevant information regarding Covid 19 but also of the world around us so
that through teaching each child they can reach out a huge number of families just the way Rabindranath
Tagore showed the path-

A Lamp can only light another Lamp when it continues to burn in its own flame.

72

Physical Education- Power to Inspire

Asserting that sports can help win the battle against pandemic, SPS planned to have Sports classes on
virtual mode and urged Sagarites and their parents to make physical activity an integral part of their lives.

It was a tough time to try online physical activities but we, Sagarites are unstoppable and
nothing could deter us from putting forth our ideas and implement them in
accordance with our fitness and health related
workouts, online too. We recommended the
Sagarites to do some sort of exercise just 40
minutes daily. In regards to long term health, it
reduces the risk of cardiovascular and metabolic
diseases, some cancers, and improves bone
health while offering mental health benefits by
reducing stressors. During this challenging
year, it has been a privilege to connect with
our Sagarites, both students and parents,
and help them to achieve their personal best
through Online Sports classes, Virtual
Summer Camp and Online Sports and
Fitness Competitions and Yoga Classes which
were a part of a month long celebration of National Sports Day.

Switching to Online mode of teaching and coaching was a tough task for our teachers as well as
for others also but the teachers were keen to train Sagarites and the school
was committed to train the teachers ready for online mode of transaction.
This was really an amazing experience for both students and teachers.

The journey of Online mode of sports started with the First ever Virtual

Admin Department- Coming Together in Crisis

Providing technical and pedagogical support in the New Normal
The Covid-19 pandemic has set the world in turmoil and greatly challenged our regular ways of leading
lives. The schools were no exceptions and the students could not physically attend their schools for a very
long time. The 'Normal' way was no longer possible and an effective 'New Normal' was to be swiftly
evolved.
There is a famous saying: “Tough times don't last, tough people do!”

The Admin department quickly analyzed the boundaries set by
the pandemic and started to explore new methods to ensure
uninterrupted academic operations. They quickly set up the
digital classrooms and started to train academic staff in using
these online systems efficiently. The training continued for the
students and parents as well. Their untiring efforts laid a
strong foundation that enabled a smooth and holistic learning
experience for the students in these unusual times. Be it a
physical classroom environment or an online virtual classroom
setup with digital learning, Sagar Public School has always
stayed up-to-date and emerged as a trend setter.
Adapting to changes is always a gradual process and sometimes requires an additional hand holding.
Team members of the Admin department left no stone unturned in guiding parents at every step of this
transition in their quest to address each and every concern of the parents in the best possible way.
Amid uncertainty of pandemic, the department also pivoted to a 'new normal' by receiving online
applications followed by counseling of parents in a virtual way to welcome new children on board as a new
Sagarite.
They ensured strict compliance to government guidelines and Covid-19 protocols while re-opening the
schools for students of higher classes and maintained a healthy, safe and secure environment for
students, parents and visitors inside the school campus or while commuting from school transport.
The Admin department has been instrumental in keeping the school operations intact and played a vital
role in the overall success of the school in this pandemic outbreak.

Trainers’ Training

The rigorous training programme for the teachers that continued for the entire year
enabled educators to acquire actionable insights on use of technology, blended
learning, learner-centric pedagogies and online assessments. It was designed in a
manner that while the trainers acquired new skills and strategies during the course,
they also got to implement the same through exercises and discussions. On program
completion, they were fully enabled to implement new technologies, innovative
pedagogies and effective assessment techniques as a part of the sessions with their
students.

The Learning Curve

From Face-to-Face Teaching to Pandemic Pedagogy
In a matter of days, the classrooms transformed from bustling hives of learning, to barren squares of
never-ending silence with teachers, the unsung heroes of the crisis, sitting far yet trying to come close to
the children. The corona virus pandemic had brought life to a standstill across the world. Education has
changed dramatically, with the distinctive rise of e-learning, whereby teaching is undertaken remotely
and on digital platforms.
Teachers proved that social distancing did not mean relational distancing. They designed virtual lessons in
limited time and limited resources. Despite all odds they found class room communities with Empathy and
Kindness for their students in their hearts. They found innovative ways to make learning possible. Cloth
hangers became tripod stands, walls of their houses became blackboards, no roadmaps, no blue
prints….It wasn't perfect, yet the best panacea to all problems.
Online Learning became the 'New Normal'
Despite the overwhelming consequences of the pandemic, this global crisis has also been an
extraordinary time for learning.
And we, at Sagar Public School were not left behind. We learnt how adaptable and resilient educational
systems, policy makers and teachers were and how they had to quickly re-imagine human connections
and interactions to facilitate learning.
With technology entering the education space, one of the biggest traits that teachers need to have to
survive in the post-coronavirus world is their ability to be tech-savvy.
Virtual Training Module sessions were conducted for the teachers as it was felt that artificial
intelligence and internet-controlled operations will be the future that will help students learn during the
pandemic. Tools like Padlet, Word Wall, Mentimeter, Wheel of Names, Mindmup, Ed puzzle
etc. were mastered by the teachers after rigorous brainstorming and training sessions.
Through this teachers developed the aptitude to learn new technologies and develop the skill to use
emerging tools in teaching. Their classrooms are now more interactive and engaging. Quality concerns in

81

school education are among the priorities of CBSE
and Sagar Public School, with its thrust on excellence,
plays a pivotal role in the development of the country.

During the pandemic the CBSE conducted several
Capacity Building Workshops which were
attended by teachers across all the section of Sagar
Public School, creating situations where all teachers
were able to get the best possible professional
preparation and support for updating their
pedagogical skills which resulted in quality teachers
for all levels of education to render optimum benefit to all students of school in the pandemic.

At SPS GN, we believe that a well-informed teacher can do wonders in a classroom and the same was
emphasized by National Education Policy. Invigorating sessions on National Education Policy were
conducted. The main objective of this webinar was to create awareness about the newly launched
National Education Policy - 2020 amongst teachers, students, officials, and other stakeholders in the
higher education system.

It was felt that there should be a resource which contains all information related to each of the
stakeholders at one place. Thereby a series of handbooks was introduced by CBSE.

In this regard several Webinars were conducted by all the Departments of Sagar Public School where
interactive sessions on the CBSE Manuals were conducted for the Teachers.

Teachers were now technically empowered and were well versed with the CBSE Manuals and trainings,
but in the process of Virtual teaching it was felt that somewhere the bond between the teachers and
students was losing its grip. Now was the time to strengthen the emotional bonding with the students.

A pioneer in this field is Gijubhai Badheka. At Sagar Public School, a series of trainings based on the
Educational Philosophies and ideologies from the books of the great educationist, Gijubhai was
conducted.

With these sessions the teachers were able reconnect and reestablish the bond with the students and
parents. Education is a shared commitment between dedicated teachers, motivated students and
enthusiastic parents with high expectations.

Adding to the count of the webinars Mr. Ferose emphasized on preparing students to face challenges and
learn from failures so as to be successful in life. Mr. Ferose VR in his talk suggested Schools to make
students a lifelong learner. He also stressed on giving project-based assignments to students as learning
usually occurs outside the classroom.

Teachers were now armed with all the latest teaching methodologies and they were all set to face all the
challenges coming on their way.

Sagar Public School has always been a place where values and 'Sanskaars' are above all, and when it
comes to values our elders are our role Models. Respected Dubey sir motivated the leaders of the school
to realize their goals, a session for leaders on Realizing the Goals on 10th July 2020 was conducted by
Shri. K.K. Dubey .Through this session he asserted to continue growing our systems to give the best to
our students. He further highlighted the ideal characteristics of a good school and spoke of the need to
keep reinventing ourselves.

Adding to the journey towards excellence a series of webinars were also conducted by the seniors.
Leading the way by example, Principal, SPSGN, Ms. Alpa Prabhu, became the resource person in the
Blub World Webinar. She talked about developing better teaching styles using technology.

82

The Director of the school, Dr Jaishree Kanwar as
a panelist, in Reinventing Schools, highlighted
on Cornerstone of 21st Century School. She
reiterated on the inclusive and adaptive teaching
techniques so as to promote the happiness
quotient in schools.

The skills needed to succeed in today's world and
the future are: curiosity, creativity, taking
initiatives and being multi skilled. With the
aspiration to make the most of our time during
the lockdown, SPS initiated, Versatile Adroits,
a Multiskilling Development Programme
for teachers to empower them in areas such as
English, Sanskrit, Human Resource, Admission Counselling and Mathematics.

After acquiring all this wisdom, teachers were confident and endowed with various skills.

To make Sagarites independent learners, a session on Flip Classroom- The New Normal in Learning
was conducted for the Teaching fraternity at SPS schools by Mr. Rajesh Awasthi, Principal,
Choithram School, Indore. The session began with an introduction to the history of Flipped Classroom
and gradually progressed to the customization of learning experience for each child. He emphasized that
the role of a Teacher should be restricted to facilitating learning as compared to the traditional teacher
centered classroom transaction. He then, discussed the four pillars of Flipped Learning.

Effective communication is an art, an instrument that connects hearts to hearts. There was a series
of sessions organized by the Director of the school, Dr. Jaishree Kanwar to make teachers confident and
better communicators. The session concluded with the active participation of teachers in the activity
conducted based on the Four skills - Hard Skills, Soft Skills, Life Skills and Life Values. Overall, it was an
empowering and insightful session for all the teachers.

Teachers were accustomed with this new normal. They adopted many changes.

Change is the Only Constant

A training session was organized for all the teachers of Classes VI to VIII by the Director, Dr.Jaishree
Kanwar with the view to enable teachers to convert every challenging situation into a positive learning
opportunity. They learnt to give up stress and remain balanced in all situations.

Teaching is a work of Heart

In the session with the TGTs and PGTs encapsulating the varied aspects of How to become an
Exemplary Teacher, different elements of the teaching learning process were discussed via a PPT and a
motivational video, in a bid to jog and refresh everyone's memory and to take up the role of teachers with
renewed vigor. As a surprise element at the end, the teachers too, were left with some food for thought as
they were asked to find out the meaning of the word, "trim tab "and its relevance to the lives of teachers.
The session was indeed, an invigorating one for all.

Motivational and Skill Development session for Activity Teachers was conducted with the view to motivate
the teachers and make them more ambitious in their areas of interest. The six important Ps highlighted
were- Patience, Passion, Productivity, Positive Attitude, Perseverance and Proactive.

Learning is a lifelong process. Year 2020 was a challenging year but we at Sagar Public School take
challenges as opportunities. Lot of insight was shared and gained. Once again it was proved by Sagar
Public School that patience, persistence and perspiration make an unbeatable combination for Success.

Certificate of Achievement in the 4th First and foremost, accept my sincere congratulations
International Online Competition on conducting the online classes so smoothly. We are
by BRICSMATH.COM+ glad to see that the school has been quick in adapting
to the need of the hour and switched to an online
learning platform. With initial hiccups, the learning
system is now stabilized. It is due to the concerted
efforts by the school and the teachers that the classes
are running smoothly and efficiently.

Our children follow a set routine, interact with their
teachers and classmates, and achieve daily targets,
which keep them occupied constructively otherwise it
would have become difficult to handle when they are
confined to the homes. It keeps them positive and
happy. They look forward to the classes. We would like
the school to continue the Online Learning Classes
until normalcy is resumed. It is a learning challenge
for all the stakeholders here, students, teachers,
management and parents and working in sync, we will
make it a success with our team efforts.

Learning ‘Through the Arts’ and ‘With the Arts’

This year saw the validation of our belief in art as a medium of teaching-
learning and a key to understand concepts within any subject of the
curriculum, with art integration.

Conversation of Arts

We all know that change is inevitable. That change makes us stronger. At first,
it seemed like every school year brought monumental changes. There was
always something new to learn became something we accepted, and began to
see that the new things inevitably made us better teachers. So yeah, change
did seem to be inevitable and in today’s scenario it has become the NEW
NORMAL. Though many teachers struggle when their tried-and-true
pedagogy, developed and refined over years of practice, doesn’t translate to
distance learning. This was the greatest struggle that we have also faced. To
tackle the situation, we have come up with the stage wise art integrated
learning module as devised by CBSE that has made the teaching learning
process extremely engaging.

And we found that structuring a school around the arts can help students excel
academically and develop social and emotional skills. Following the guidelines
as devised by CBSE in the Art Integrated Module we have structured a plan for
all the sections of the school. This teaching-learning model was based on
learning ‘Through the Arts’ and ‘With the Arts’: it is a process where art became the medium of
teaching-learning, a key to understand concepts within any subject of the curriculum. To our surprise we
found that most of the activities devised in the module were already incorporated in our day-to-day
teaching process be it Inter Disciplinary Projects, Drama, Debates and other co curricular activities
all form an integral part of our curriculum.

Stage Wise Learning Objectives: We have catered to the needs of all and a Stage-wise plan was
implemented for engaging children in art integrated learning.

Pre - Primary: At this stage children are both highly inquisitive and energetic. Creative activities such as
Drawing, Painting, Clay Work, Music is both appealing and engaging for young children. At this stage
‘all education should be through the arts. The objective of children’s participation in visual and performing
arts was to make learning joyful and engaging to allow free emotional expression, communication and
creative involvement and to facilitate children to express freely and spontaneously through Fancy Dress
Competition, Fireless Cooking, Poem Recitation, Drawing and Sketching Competitions.

Primary: Art education at this stage needs to link with all subjects such that it becomes a tool of
teaching-learning concepts. Art can play an effective role in strengthening the child’s
curiosity, imagination, and sense of wonder. Keeping this in mind we emphasized on
the skills related to intellectual, socio- emotional, motor, language and overall
literacy. The objectives of AIL at primary level was to help children experience joy
and eagerness to learn, enhance observation, curiosity, exploration and creative and
free expression and create awareness of rich heritage and cultural diversity. Project
work on Manipur and Nagaland helped them to get an insight about the rich
heritage and culture of these states.

Secondary: During this stage children are ready to comprehend more complex
interconnections between concepts and the environment. AIL can allow children
build on simple concepts as well as relate them with academic content meaningfully.
Children also enhance the skill to work in groups and explore ideas together. The
objectives of AIL at this stage was to help the children construct knowledge of
themes, subjects and concepts and be aware of the inter-
disciplinary connect, create art and apply their artistic skills in day-
to-day activities through Flip Learning, PPT Presentations,
Extempore and Celebration of all the important days.

There is no other way to grow but to embrace change. Life is about moving on, accepting
changes and looking forward to what makes you stronger and more complete.
