Profile

My name is Rathidevi Elangovan and I am 24 years old this
year. I’m a final year Bachelor in Teaching English as
Second language (TESL) student at Management and
Science University (MSU). The reason why I chose this
particular course was teaching is my passion since I was a
child. I like to educate children to bring out their talents
and social capabilities. Microteaching subject is to enhance
teaching skills and gain confidence in teaching.

Personal principle in teaching.

I believe that teaching is a diverse job that can balance
several responsibilities and objectives at once while
remaining flexible. We can improve both the effectiveness
and efficiency of teaching by assisting students in
establishing the environments that encourage their learning
and implementing resources, topic, and teaching
procedures. Although putting these concepts into practise
takes time and effort, it frequently results in time and
effort savings in the long run.

Hence, teacher should invest more in implementing
effective teaching skills by adopting proper teaching
resources align with learning goals.

Overall reflection about
microteaching class.

By taking this microteaching subject I get the chance to
practice my self in real classroom setting in terms of teaching
students in fun and engaging way by introducing realia through
our class tasks and projects.

In my opinion, this subject gives students to improve their
teaching skills in future and this is my second time experiencing
microteaching and I really enjoyed this subject throughout the
semester. I’m able to apply the knowledge that I gain from this
subject into my teaching to improve classroom management.

All in all, I become more confidence in managing classroom and
learnt various teaching skills to be implemented especially in
designing lesson plan for a lesson such as ABCD technique and
learning domains. I took this opportunity to thank my lecturer
Madam Nirmala for assigned us project 1 and 2 to explore our
strengths and weaknesses.

WEEK 1 DaTe: 4th & 5th of July 2022

In today’s lesson, we discussed about the differences
between KBSM and KSSM and what is CEFR. Madam
Nirmala assigned us to share related resources we found
on website with cohort. Besides that, she also explained
about SOW and project 1 and 2 which is mockteaching and
e-portfolio.
On the next day, we still talked about topic 1 which is
regarding teaching skills and lesson plan. She explained
about the key elements of lesson plan such as learning
standard and learning objective. Madam had given catchy
examples to understand the differences between KSSM
and CEFR.

WEEK 1 DaTe: 7th & 8th of July 2022

I’n this class, we saw another lecturer came and taught us
on how to use the smart TV and we were required to
download E Share on our gadgets. Next, I learned on how
to differentiate content standard and learning standard
from DSKP. Even though I learned this in my Diploma, I
comprehend more about this two components which is
important for a lesson plan. As our additional information,
madam conducted quiz on curriculum to test our
understanding on the topic.

On the next day, we were given language skills by our
lecturer to create a lesson plan, she letted us to choose
our own topic from any form. Hence I picked form 4
speaking skill and the topic was “Mother Nature”. I was
planing to have debate for students to justify their side
based on the topic given. Another things I learned during
this lesson was we must consider time management when
creating an activity for 1 hour lesson, it should be 35 to
40 minutes if it is for 1 hour class.

WEEK 2 DaTe: 12th & 14th of July 2022

We discussed about Topic 2 which is Teaching and
Learning objectives. On today’s lesson, I learned that
learning outcome should meets the requirements of the
students proficiency level. There were an extra tips given
for us to understand better to construct learning
outcome which was it can be achieved through feedbac,
and assessment. We also talked about SMART model. I
learned that we must linked learning objectives with
learning outcome by changing particular words.

On the next day, madam had recap the previous lesson and
went deep into learning outcome by using four
components which were audienc, behavior, condition and
degree. From this point, I managed to understand deeper
about the learning outcome in lesson plan. Madam wrote
few examples on whiteboard and asked us to identify the
key elements. It was fun and engaging activity too. I
managed to answer to the questions asked by madam in
end of the class.

WEEK 2 DaTe: 15th July 2022

Today madam has given us a task constructing lesson plan
which was the continuation of previous class. We all have
submitted our works on Padlet. This time we made our
own lesson plan with the guidance of madam Nirmala
based on the feedback she gave in our previous lesson. I
understand the part where she provided an example on
learning and content standards from the DSKP.

Our lecturer also provided us with clearer explanation on
learning objectives and on how to create the right one
based on the chosen topic. Besides that, madam gave us
immediate feedback on our works. This made me even
more clearer version of creating a lesson plan. I believed I
could write a lesson plan better for upcoming classes.

WEEK 3

Medical Leave : 18th, 19th, 21st & 22nd of July 2022
Medical Condition: Influenza A

I was unable to attend my lecture and tutorial class
during week 3 as I had severe fever for 5 days.

WEEK 4 DaTe: 25th & 26th of July 2022

On this day, I learnt about stimulus variation meaning the

different strategies we can implement to grabs students

responses during lesson. Madam also gave us chance to

express our ideas on strategies for students on

Jamboard. What I learnt from this topic is the gestures

of a teacher is important when communicate with

students no matter it is verbal or non-verbal and

questioning style also is an important component that

need be considered when it comes to effective teaching

and learning.

On the next day, madam discussed about the questioning
techniques which can lead to major impact to students
comprehension. I learned that we can implement HOTS
questions to provoke their thoughts and teacher should
keep linking connection between questions and answers
by walking around the classroom keep eye contact with
students and non-verbal signs such as thumbs up. I have
also learned how to reach to students answers and how
students will respond to teachers questions.

WEEK 4 DaTe: 28th & 29th of July 2022

We were divided into few groups to create a models or
posters based on the questions given. I have learned about
the criteria of Posters, Diagram, and Infographic in details.
Madam taught us about the requirements of these
teaching aids can be used in our classroom based on the
topic.

On the next day, we were given a task by madam which
creating questions using Bloom’s Taxanomy and the
questions must related to the topic chosen. I have learned
that we should follow the Bloom’s Taxanomy level from
simple question to complicated question. This is due to
activate students prior knowledge on the topic.

Evidence

WEEK 5 DaTe: 1st & 2nd of Aug 2022

We learnt about reinforcement strategies to handle
students responses during lesson. Personally I think today’s
lesson was fun because madam has given various examples
of responding to students answers. I get to know how to
respond positively to your students responses and how to
praise them verbally and non verbal. I also learned the
differences between reinforcement and punishment.

On the next day, I learned about closure in lesson plan. The
maximum time limit for closure part is 3 to 5 minutes
where teacher should wrap up the lesson effectively by
giving extension tasks and enhancement tasks to improve
students understanding on topic. Madam taught us how to
organise on a whiteboar. Madam gave us some examples
of writing Date and grammar focus on the right side of
whiteboard and Day, learning objective on the left side of
whiteboard.

WEEK 5 DaTe: 4th & 5th Aug 2022

Project 1: Reflection

For Project 1 our group decided to conduct a lesson for
Form 4 students and the topic chosen was “Buy It”. We
were very particular with our teaching aids since we
integrated multimedia in teaching. We developed teaching
aids that appropriate for 21st century ESL teaching and
Learning based on the FOUR language skills.

We came up with effective teaching aids such as bringing
real money and shopping bags to classroom to encourage
our students to get involved in the activities given. We also
wanted our students to practi logical thinking when buying
things since the topic itself means it is necessary to buy
or not.

Overall we presented our lesson plans for FOUR language
skills and we managed to grab students attention. We also
received feedback from our lecture and we had a
chance to correct our mistakes regarding the activities
and teaching aids.

Evidence

WEEK 6&7 DaTe: 8th - 19th Aug 2022

We had started with our mock teaching scheduled by our
lecturer. Madam instructed us clearly and all of us were
given 15 minutes to conduct our lesson and the language
skill was set by madam Nirmala. No lecture and tutorial
sessions were done throughout the week due to our
project 2.

I personally enjoyed every lesson conducted by my
classmates. The best part was the feedback session
from our lecturer Madam Nirmala, since all the comments
given by madam was so insightful and I took this
opportunity to learn more about do and don’t during
teaching.

WEEK 7 DaTe: 15th Aug 2022

Project 2: Mock teaching

On this day, I was assigned to conduct mock teaching for
form 2 students and the topic was “Weather”. The
grammar focus was adjectives and the language skill
chosen was speaking. Students were required to share
their favourite activities that can be done based on the
weathers they picked from envelope. Students were
asked to present their answers through dialogues.

I was really nervous before I get started with my lesson
however I managed to conduct the class firmly at the end.
I was happy with my student’s engagement and I received a
good comment from one of my classmates regarding the
way I controlled the class.

To sum up, this mock teaching session was the best
platform for future teachers to experience the real
classroom setting and improvise our teaching skill.
