Mental health pt. II

It's not just
a phase

Since talking about mental health
issues is frowned upon in many
Asian cultures, symptoms are
ignored, denied, or minimised.
The mere mention of “depression”
or “anxiety” will get you
disapproving looks from people.

It's made harder by the overall
mistrust about the issues facing
today's youth. The "older
generation" and the community
in general frequently dismiss and
disregard problems with mental
health by labeling them as a
"phase."

Mental health in
Asian cultures

Common sources
of stress:

Parental pressure to succeed in
academics.
The pressure of having to
conform to the "model minority"
stereotype (a view that
inaccurately portrays Asian as
successfully integrating into
mainstream culture and having
to overcome the challenges of
racial bias.)
Family obligations based on
strong traditional and cultural
values.
Discrimination due to racial or
cultural background.
Mental health being a taboo
topic.

You are valid.

social media is

not reality.

Before you start comparing yourself to

that figure on Instagram, remember

that social media is a highlight reel.

People want to look their best, act and

be at their best, and they show that with

the rest of the world on social media.
Let's be aware that many pictures (&

even videos) are edited to make it look

how they want it to look.
There's no such thing as a perfect.
And it's time that we realize everyone

is beautiful and enough.
Just enough.
Just as you are.

Steps to support your
loved ones

through tough times

Tip #1: Don't allow your negative emotions to be visible

It can be frustrating trying to help someone who is ill. You might feel anger,
pity, sadness or even helplessness when you try to help. It’s best to not show
these emotions. Don’t sigh when your loved one responds in a way you don’t
like, and don’t talk to them as if they are stupid. Keep in mind, if they could
act healthy they would, and if you show a negative emotion to your loved one
they are more likely to hide their feelings

Tip #2: Show that you care about them

This one may seem obvious but often mental illnesses makes a person feel broken
or somehow let down. Therefore your loved one should be reminded that you care
greatly about them. Without this reassurance they may feel as if no one cares.

Tip #3: Don’t tell or remind them that it could be worse

This is extremely unhelpful. The idea that knowing that some people's
situation is worse will make you feel better is simply not true. In fact it might
make your close ones feel even worse.

Firstly, all that matters to your close one right now is that they feel bad, so
bringing this up doesn't really factor into how they feel.

Secondly this reminder may cause guilt within your close one. They may feel
guilty for talking about the illness or even worse feel guilty for being ill at all.
This means that your close one is less likely to open up about their illness to
you or anyone else in the future.

Tip #4: Don’t try to relate how they feel to your own experiences

It can be tempting to try and relate how they feel to things you’ve been
through but, for an example, telling someone who has bipolar that you
understand because you have mood swings, or your friend with anxiety that
you understand because you get anxious before exams could be an oblivious
action as they are nowhere close on the same level. Mental illness is more
extreme than other behavior in feelings, and can often be invalidating to hear
these things.

Doing this tends to focus the conversation back with you, when it is the other
person who needs support, so it’s better to listen rather than offer up your
own stories.

Tip #5 Do try and research their illness

The internet is a wonderful tool that allows you to research whatever illness your
loved one has. You can research symptoms, helpful tips, and read others'
experiences. This all means you can support your loved one in the best way
possible.

Tip #6 Don’t think that you can fix it

Recognize that supporting our friend doesn't mean fixing their problems. A
person with depression often needs treatment to see improvement – and
that’s something only a medical professional can provide.

Tip # 7 Don’t: Give up
But what if your friend rejects your efforts even when you’ve done all the
right things

“Their rejection may be a defense mechanism. They realize you’re recognizing
their symptoms and that they’re not doing as good a job hiding them as
they’ve thought.” explains Dr. Borland. “It’s easy to react negatively to a friend
who’s unwilling to get help. But stick with them and maintain
communication. Continue to check in on your friend and encourage them to
get help. Dr. Borland also recommends trying to be there with your friend
instead of for your friend. “It means I’m in this with you, even if you push me
away.”

In the end Your mental health requires as much attention as your physical
health. It's important to look out for any habits of yours that may be
negatively affecting your mental health. If you make an effort to recognize
and eliminate such habits from your life, your mental health will surely thank
you for it. Looking for additional professional health is always a good idea to
ensure your mental health is in the right shape.

Young leaders

jACK.ORG

revolutionising mental health

In 2010, Eric Windeler and Sandra
haningoton lost their son, Jack
windeler to suicide at the age of
18. For whatever reason, he was
unable to reach out for the help
that he needed.

Jack's parents started a memorial
fund at kids help phone to ensure
that every young person
struggling is identified and gets
the help that they deserve.
Through this fund, the jack project
grew, an initiative aimed at doing
its part to improve youth mental
health across Canada.

Founded in 2012, jack.org is a non-
profit organisation based in Canada,
that focuses on the youth's mental
health issues and suicide prevention.
Jack. org empowers young leaders to
revolutionise mental health " from
coast to coast to coast".

Its main motive being to teach the
youths of Canada, where all of them
understand how to take care of their
own mental health and look out for
each other. They strive to reach a
Canada without shame, and where
the ones that need support and
guidance get all the help that they
deserve.

PROGRESS
TAKES ACTION.
NOW MORE
THAN EVER WE
NEED TO MAKE
SURE THAT
WE'RE MOVING
FORWARD.

Lunadira
RnB/Soul

Lunadira, a singer-songwriter from Malaysia. She started out
having her heart in Rnb and Ballads. As much as she would
hate to put herself in a 'box', she would say her music is
definitely leaning more towards Alt RnB.

please you

please you sounds like a break-up song, or precisely, a break free from a partner who
were manipulative and emotionally abusive. "Your heart just taints everything that I've

ever loved about me" whatever happened in the relationship, doesn't sound very
healthy.

Hoodie

Stuck in MCO, Lunadira and her main collaborator Reddi Rocket wanted to treat their
usual recording sessions into a music therapy session by writing songs that felt like they
didn't have to think too much to make, craving for comfort in a world that felt like it was
slowing to a standstill inspired them to create an atmosphere with a little hope and love.

am i gonna die?

“There aren’t a lot of songs on the radio that talks about falling in love but
doubting it. We decided to talk about unrequited love, being afraid of
ruining relationships, and simply accepting that you’re not the one,”.

PLOT
This show is created by Adam Kay and based on his memoir of
the same name. It focuses on the lives of a group of junior
doctors working on an obstetrics and gynaecology ward in a
National Health Service hospital. It profiles their professional
and personal lives and explores the emotional effects of
working in a stressful work environment. The series closely
follows the stories of Adam Kay and Shruti Acharya as they
work through the ranks of hospital hierarchy. These characters
both break the fourth wall and directly address viewers with
