The breezy, fresh, eight o’clock air was rather
effective for waking me up properly. My pony’s
stride was long and comfortable and his unshod
hooves clipped and clopped out a rhythemitic
chime on the hardened race. Groups of bamboo
trees whispered to each other as the wind rustled
through them. It was peaceful and quiet out the
back of our dairy farm. My pony [Bobby was his
name] and I trotted happily out past our mob of
dairy calves. The calves cantered up to the fence
line and stared at us with wonderously big brown
eyes and mildly curious expressions. Bobby and I
were going for a quick trot out the back before
trotting back in again only to come out again to
shift the calves. Half an hour later we were
walking slowly along behind the calves while soxy,
my border collie herded them along, cantering
expertly from side to side keeping them in a tight
group. One little calf got a little to close to Bobby,
and he arched his neck eying her angrily. She
leaped forward and pushed back into the mob.
There are a few tricky spots that present
problems while either trying to get the calves
through or past. One of those is the under pass.
When we walked to the under pass a little way
from it I halted Bob and pushed ‘’over’’ so he was
standing across the race. It took a few minutes to
push them through. It wasn’t exactly interesting
watching sox try to get them through so I fussed
over Bobby instead. Sox soon had them sorted
and we moved off again. We were now moving
along at a brisk pace and soon reached the open
paddocks. Bob and cantered up a steep slope to
save time. Bob threw me back in the saddle with
his quick transition but I quickly regained my seat
and stood up in the two point position. I put slight
pressure on the reins so bobby wouldn’t startle
the calves. We had to go down a nice steep hill
before trotting along a grass track that lead the
calves there paddock. Mum shut the gate on the
calves and bobby and I trotted back up the hill so I
could groom him and put his day cover on and he
could have a bite to eat.
