HOW TO DO LAMP WITH PHOTOCELL WIRING

1) LIST OF TOOLS

a) Wire cutter / strippers ( 1 Unit )

b) Pliers (1 Unit )

c) Philips screwdriver (1 Unit )

d) Test Pen ( 1 Unit )

2) LIST OF MATERIAL
a) Screw (as much as needed)
b) Cable Clip (as much as we needed)
c) 6A MCB ( Mini Circuit Breaker ) ( 1 Unit )
d) 20A RCCB ( Main Current Circuit Breaker ) ( 1 Unit )
e) Main Switch ( Main Circuit Breaker ) ( 1 Unit )
f) Wire – i) Red (Live) ( 5 meters )
ii) Black (Natural) ( 5 meters )
iii) Green (Earth) ( 2 meters )
g) Photocell ( 1 Unit )
h) Lamp Holder ( 1 Unit )
i) Lamp (1 Unit )
j) Socket Base ( 1 Unit )
k) Lamp Switch ( 1 Unit )

3) SAFETY STEPS
i) Avoid water at all the times when working with electricity. Never touch or try
repairing any electrical equipment or circuits with wet hands.
ii) Never use equipment with frayed cords, damaged insulation, or broken plugs.
iii) Always use insulated tools while working.
iv) Never try repairing energized equipment.
v) Always use appropriate insulated rubber gloves and goggles while working on
any branch circuit or any other electrical circuit.

4) STEPS
i) Turn off the power by shutting off the circuit breaker that connects to the switch
and electrical outlet.
ii) Arrange the main switch, RCCB and MCB in a Distribution Box.

iii) Connect the red wire to the first pole and loop it to the RCCB.
iv) Next, connect the black wire to the second pole and loop it to the RCCB.

v) After that, connect the black wire from the RCCB to the natural link in the
distribution box.

vi) Loop the red wire from the RCCB to the MCB.

vii) Then, screw the socket base, Photocell and lamp holder to the wiring bay.
viii) Starting with the red wire, cut it as much as needed and then loop it from the MCB to

the switch.

ix) Connect the load wire from photocell to switch using red wire.
x) Connect the natural wire from photocell to the lamp using black wire.

xi) Connect the black wire from natural link in the distribution box to the lamp and do
the same thing to the green wire from earth link.

xii) Finish the wiring with cable clip

5) TEST
i) Continuity Test
 Why: To check if current flows in an electric circuit
 How:
1) First insert the black test lead into the Com Jack.
2) Then insert the red lead into the Ω Jack.
3) Remove the leads in reverse order: red first then black.
4) With the circuit de-energized, connect the test lead across the component
that is being tested.
 Result : The multi meter will beep if a complete path is detected.

ii) Polarity Test
 Why: It is a test conducted on both primary and secondary windings of a
transformer to find out the direction of the current.
 How:
1) First insert the black test lead into the Com Jack.
2) Then insert the red lead into the Ω Jack.
3) Remove the leads in reverse order: red first then black.
4) With the circuit de-energized, connect the test lead across the component
that is being tested.
 Result : The multi meter beeps if a complete path is detected.

iii) Insulation Test
 Why: To ensure that there is no current leakage and to ensure that there
is no short circuit between phases.
 How:
1) Disconnect all power supplies.
2) Adjust the meter to mega Ohm reading.

3) Touch the meter probe on each phase as follows:
Live – Natural
Live – Earth
Natural – Earth

 Result : If the multimeter show “NOL”, then there is no leakage or

short circuit
