Position the tack welds at 3, 6, 9, and 12 o'clock. (See Fig. 69)
Figure 69. Pipe as a clock face.
Feather the tack welds with the grinder for complete fusion. (See Figure 70).
Figure 70.
Position the pipe in the welding positioner as in Figure 71.
Figure 71. Pipe in the 2G position.
Weld the Root Pass using a slight weaving "Drag" technique. See Figure 72 for the gun
angle.
Figure 72.
Clean each deposited bead before making another run
Root pass should be flush or not more than 3mm convex.
Examine the root bead for complete penetration along the entire joint.
Weld the Hot Pass using weaving "Push" technique. See Figure 72 for the Gun Angle.
NOTE: The Edge of the Groove should be retained. See Figure 73. This will be your guide in
depositing the Final Run or Cap Pass.
Figure 73.
The cover pass should fuse with the base metal and with each other and can be flush or not
more than 3mm convex.
Test the weld by passing one face bend and one root bend, if required.
Check with the instructor for evaluation, if necessary
Practice this exercise until you meet the standards established in the course.
