2017 SH Conference Storybook

It is with great excitement that we bring you information on the AIMS 2017 Shanghai
Conference - AIMS’ 10th annual conference!

The Conference was held in Shanghai, China from 30 April – 3 May 2017. On Sunday,
30 April IBNA and AUB held separate Dinner functions.

The conference was officially opened the morning of Monday, 1 May 2017.

The theme for the Conference was “The New World” focusing on our changing and
evolving environment in relation to aspects of business; technology, economics, people
etc and their impact on the Insurance Environment in which we operate.

With Shanghai being China’s biggest city and its global financial hub, along with quickly
becoming one of the world’s top business destinations; this was a fitting destination for
our conference and its theme.

As always, we thank our insurance partners and sponsors for their continued support of
AIMS and its members. It is with these partnerships that we can continue to grow
together and achieve success.

Gangster Walking Tour

We explored Shanghai’s
colonial underworld on a
gangster tour through the
most famous streets. Along
the way we learnt the art
of chopstick pickpocketing,
how to cheat at blackjack,
and how to shoot like a
criminal kingpin!

Cycling Tour

We first rode to People's Square, the biggest city
square in Shanghai and the location of many
significant buildings like the Shanghai Museum
and other various Government Buildings. Passing
some of busiest streets and malls in Shanghai
while we biked through Nanjing Road. Then on
to the Old French Concession, a section with a
romantic ambience left by the French who built
and occupied the area during the colonial
period. This area is full of cafes and interesting
shops in traditional Shanghai alleys. Next we
explored Xintiandi, which has many fashionable
shops and entertainment areas in old Shikumen
style buildings. After that we moved on to
Shanghai Old Street to ride through the old
streets the hold centuries of character. We
finished off with a cycle around the wide Binjiang
Avenue in the Pudong District to experience the
modern Shanghai skyscraper.

Oriental Pearl TV Tower

The striking modern structure of Shanghai’s
Oriental Pearl TV Tower rises to a dizzying 468
meters above the grounds of Pudong Park in the
Lujiaziu District. Believed to be inspired by a
poem from the Tang Dynasty, the tower
effortlessly combines traditional influences with
a contemporary feel.
The tower contains various exciting and
adrenaline pumping activities, including; a
transparent panoramic lift, the “Aerial
Sightseeing Corridor – Walking on the Clouds”,
which not only has transparent walls but also a
transparent floor, and a Virtual Reality roller
coaster as well as the Oriental Pearl Science
Fantasy World and the Shanghai Municipal
History Museum.

Enjoy some time away from the hustle and
bustle of Shanghai at High Tea in the Calypso
Restaurant and Lounge, a modern venue with
detailed traditional touches. Enjoy some
delicious treats and some light entertainment.

Tuesday - Zhujiajiao Water Village

Zhujiajiao is a township located in the Qingpu
District of Shanghai. The town is a vibrant
ancient water village that was formed over 1,700
years ago.
Throughout history Zhujiajiao was an important
trading hub for the surrounding countryside, and
many of the buildings that can be seen today
date back to the Ming and Qing dynasties.
Traditionally, goods and people were ferried on
the small canals from house to house, passing
under the 36 ancient stone bridges that are all
still in use by locals and tourists.

Wednesday – Dumpling Making Class

Learn the secrets to creating traditional
dumplings.
This was a fantastic “hands on” class where we
were joined by a dumpling expert who taught us
the art of making handmade dumplings.

Dinners

Monday – Conference Opening Dinner

This themed dinner was set Between the 1920s and the ‘30s. At that time Shanghai was one of the
most prosperous and cosmopolitan cities of East Asia, a centre of business and pleasure offering a
vibrant lifestyle thanks to its restaurants, cafes, cinemas, cabarets and dance halls. Jazz was all the rage
along with anything western.

Tuesday - Cruise and The Power Station of Art

On Tuesday we will experience the Bund and Huangpu River in all its glory. The evening will start with a
cruise on the Huangpu River showing us the sites along both banks, with the old Shanghai (aka the
Bund) on one side, and the new (Pudong) on the other. The cruise will be followed by dinner at The
Power Station of Art located on the banks of the Huangpu River.

Wednesday - Shangri-La’s Grand Ballroom

The AIMS 2017 Conference Closing Dinner will be held in the hotel, Shangri-La’s Grand Ballroom
treating you to a “New World” focused evening.
