Chancellor’s
Welcome
I am delighted to welcome you, your
families and honoured guests to York
Minster on this long-anticipated day
of celebrations.
It is a privilege to gather here in this magnificent setting to recognise your achievements and to wish
you well for the future.
I am full of admiration for the way that you have navigated challenging times to complete your studies
and for the resilience you have demonstrated. You have worked extremely hard for your university
degree, and you deserve all the benefits that will come from your dedication and perseverance.
Education brings with it responsibilities, including the duty to make a positive contribution to the world,
to inspire others, and to continue to learn and reflect in order to effect the change you want to see. I
hope that after studying at York St John University you have also been inspired by the values that guide
us as an open, innovative, transformative and ambitious community with a strong sense of belonging.
Those values have shaped and guided us since York St John was founded in 1841 as a teacher
training college. They continue to sustain us as a thriving university with a wide-ranging academic
curriculum designed to meet the needs of our rapidly-changing world and the students who will follow
in your footsteps.
Your graduation ceremony may feel like your final departure from York St John, but your connection
to the University will last a lifetime. In becoming alumni of York St John University, you have earned
yourselves a special place in our history and will become part of an active global alumni community.
I hope this is just the beginning of an extraordinary life experience, and I offer you my very best wishes
as you set out to make your mark in the world.
Reeta Chakrabarti
Chancellor of York St John University

Vice Chancellor’s
Welcome
It is my great pleasure to welcome you as
graduands of York St John University and to
welcome your families, friends and guests to
share this special occasion. This is a day to
make memories, celebrate successes and
mark a significant milestone in your life.
Your graduation ceremony provides an opportunity to reflect on all that you have gained during your
university journey, the friendships you have made along the way, and everyone who has supported you
on that journey.
Whilst this is very much your day, it is one that that our colleagues across the University are proud to
share with you. Our academic and professional service staff have worked alongside you from initial
application to graduation, and on behalf of them, I would like to offer you our warmest congratulations.
This year we are also pleased to be awarding honorary degrees to some truly remarkable people who
share our commitment to creating social change and making a positive contribution to the world.
Today you join our world-wide alumni community, which means that your relationship with York St John
University does not end today. You are now part of the York St John alumni family – one which has been
growing steadily for more than 180 years. Please do stay in touch and share your achievements with us.
Whatever your chosen path, I send you all good wishes for your future.
Congratulations on your graduation.
Professor Karen Bryan OBE
Vice Chancellor of York St John University

Archbishop of
York’s Welcome
On this special occasion of your
graduation ceremony, may I welcome
you to York Minster as we gather to
celebrate, reflect and look forward with
hope to what the future has in store.
This ancient cathedral has seen history unfold since the 7th century, being at the heart
of Christianity in the North of England and part of daily life for those who live or stay
awhile in the historic city of York.
Today, these surroundings of stone and stained glass become part of your history as
you mark the conclusion of your studies. What a wonderful way to begin a new chapter
of life, having completed your studies and now ready to make your contribution to the
world. This year I am delighted to celebrate alongside you as I receive an honorary
degree from York St John University.
I hope your skills, talents and qualifications enable you to play a role, big or small, in
making changes for the better. Your generation will inspire us to speak out for those
who have less than others, to tackle inequality, to reduce our impact on the planet and
extend love and friendship to all our communities. Like me, I’m sure you share York St
John University’s commitment to social justice and I hope you carry this with you as
you journey through life.
On behalf of the Diocese of York I am delighted to welcome you through our doors
today and send my best wishes and blessings with you as you leave.
Stephen Cottrell
Archbishop of York

York St John University
York St John University has been educating and engaging
with the local, regional and wider community since 1841.
Originally established as a Diocesan teacher training college,
we have steadily expanded our course portfolio to offer a
broad range of educational opportunities to people from all
backgrounds. The world has changed unimaginably since our
founding, yet our core mission and purpose has remained.
Changing lives, creating opportunities and strengthening
communities through the transformative power of education.

Sustainability and care for the environment are high
on our agenda at York St John University. All our
energy now comes from sustainable, low carbon
sources and designing new developments to ensure
our energy efficiency levels are among the best in the
world. We’ve improved biodiversity on our campuses
with more than 1,000 new trees planted alongside
habitats for bugs, birds and hedgehogs to thrive. We
have worked in collaboration with wildlife specialists
to increase habitat for the endangered tansy beetle
in a dedicated wildlife area on our Haxby Road Sports
Park campus. In May 2022, breeding pairs of tansy
beetles were introduced to the site in an effort to help
save the species. Projects like these are achieved
through the dedication and hard work of our staff and
student community.
The stories we tell about how our university has
grown, achieved and changed are only part of the
picture. The most important stories are the individual
ones. Your personal successes and struggles, ideas
and inspirations. The friends you’ve made, the
experiences you’ve gained, the work you’ve done
and all you’ve learnt. Your personal journeys are the
stories that matter most at York St John University.
We hope you will look back with pride on your time at
university. We are proud of you. We want York St John
to have been transformational in the most positive
sense and for you to carry our shared legacy with you
into the world.

It’s hard to choose the best thing about
studying Biomedical Science, there are a
lot of great things about the course, from
all the skills it nurtures to the wide range
of taught content. There is something
for everyone who is interested in the
medical world. The highlight of my time
at university has for certain been the
meeting of new people. I’ve met so many
people from different backgrounds and
places all with diverse experiences, it feels
so great to get to know them all.
Oliver | Biomedical Science
My time at York St John
University has been amazing.
The opportunities available for
students are numerous and
everyone at the university is very
friendly. I couldn’t have imagined
a better life at university.
Bhoomi | International Business Management
You know when you just know? I walked
into York St John and it just felt natural
to me, just so normal. The first week of
the course I met my best friends, even to
this day they’re still my best friends. What
would I say to first year Zak now? Keep
pushing and do what feels right for you.
Joining Dance was the best experience for
me, it’s helped me meet some of the best
people ever.

Having lecturers that know
who you are is amazing as
they know your face and name
and care about your wellbeing
and grades. It’s not just a
university, it’s a community
that truly cares about you.
Millie | English Language and Linguistics
York St John University was an amazing
place to study. On my first open day I
wasn’t sure whether YSJ was the place
for me, but after talking to the Psychology
staff, the Students’ Union and exploring
York I knew this place was right for me.
I’ve met so many people from different
backgrounds and places, all with diverse
experiences. It feels so great to get to
know them all.
Danielle | Psychology
The cohort was relatively small
and it provided a comfortable
atmosphere for learning where
asking questions was welcomed.
Interaction with the lecturers
was a lot higher than it would be
in a larger university.

Honorary Degree
Lisa Holdsworth
Doctor of Letters
A highly successful writer and scriptwriter, with
credits including Call The Midwife, Ackley Bridge
and Midsomer Murders, Lisa Holdsworth’s television
career began with an episode of Fat Friends in 2001.
She won the Writer of the Year accolade at the RTS
Yorkshire Awards 2011 for her work on Waterloo
Road. Her play about Bradford writer Andrea Dunbar,
Black Teeth and a Brilliant Smile, was included in
the Observer critics’ review of the top 10 theatre
shows of 2019. She is also the chair of the Writers’
Guild of Great Britain, leading the push to ensure
fair rates of pay and working conditions for writers
in TV, film, theatre, audio, books and videogames.
She highlights issues of gender bias, regionality and
diversity in commissioning through lobbying, articles
and interviews.
