Taipei City 106, Taiwan Dear Admissions Committee, I am writing this recommendation letter on behalf of Ms. Le Thi Thu Ngan (黎氏秋銀 ), who is applying for Vietnam’s Ministry of Education Scholarships to attend your esteemed INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS program. She is one of my most exceptional students, not only for her academic achievements but also for the heartfelt story of her refusal to bow to fate and give in to destiny. Thu Ngan is from a disadvantaged family in the remote village of Ba Chuc of An Giang Province, located near the border with Cambodia, where a massacre was carried out by the Khmer Rouge (赤柬) in 1978, killing all 3,157 villagers. Most of the victims were either shot, stabbed, or beheaded. Her father passed away when she was in first grade, and ever since has lived with her mother, sister, and brother, depending on each other for survival until she graduated from high school. Although her family could no longer afford her schooling and her mother advised her to stop studying, she did not accept this option. She redoubled her efforts because she knew that she would have a bleak future if she gave up. She successfully persuaded her mother, after winning scholarships, to allow her to continue her studies. Ever since elementary school and for many years till this day, Thu Ngan has been acquiring scholarships from An Giang Lottery, Youth Newspaper, and others. After graduating high school, she passed the unified exams to enter the governmentfunded English Pedagogy Degree program at An Giang University. All dark clouds seemed dispelled, and life looked like smooth sailing ahead. However, shortly after, her mother became seriously ill and passed away. According to Thu Ngan, that was the biggest shock in her life. But she did not let that knock her down. On the contrary, it compelled her to fight even stronger and motivated her to study harder because “there will be no one behind for me to rely on, and I needed to be stronger than ever!” Due to my 40 years of industry experience in both the United States and Vietnam, An Giang University invited me to join the school in 2018 as an Advisor in the External Relations Department and an Adjunct Professor teaching Chinese Language and

Thu Ngan enrolled in my CH102 class, which is the equivalent of TOCFL A2. Having reviewed her academic data from the Canvas LMS, I knew she had a perfect 100% score in all four fields – listening, speaking, reading, and writing. That is extremely rare among my 280+ students. I can affirm that her work is top-notch and is on par with the B1 level students. It is important to note that I am comparing Thu Ngan with some of the best students in the more advanced level of classes. Finally, Thu Ngan has a clear understanding of what she wants. She sits in on my Business English classes and shows a strong interest in industry knowledge. “Despite being an English pedagogy major, I love math and logic and enjoy working with numbers. I want to challenge myself and see the bigger horizon!” said Thu Ngan. She is a rare and gifted student with a capable intellectual facility and has my staunchest support. She is one in a million and has my highest recommendation for admission to your highly respected program. Sincerely, Jason Chí Thành Lại Adjunct Professor Faulty of Foreign Language
