An Italian Story

EBOLI

I was born in the newly built hospital
of Eboli, a town situated a few
kilometres from Battipaglia, in
Campania, southern Italy.

Though today it is largely famous for
its olive oil and dairy products,
especially the renowned buffalo
mozzarellas, of which I am
particularly fond...

Eboli is a fascinating place that
evokes proud memories of its
Roman past, when it was called
Eburum.

Situated on the south edge of the hills
overlooking the valley of the Sele,
archaeological excavations show that
the area of Eboli has been inhabited
since the Bronze Age.

The town was destroyed first by
Alaric the 1st in 410 AD, followed by
the Saracens in the 10th century.

A century later, it was a stronghold of
the Principality of Salerno, with a
massive castle built by Norman duke
Robert Guiscard.

Eboli is located at the feet of Monte
Raione, part of the Monti Picentini
Regional Park. Within it, you can find the
World Wild Life Fund Oasis of Persano The River Sele
and the Foce Sele Reserve, a natural
corridor of fascinatingly diverse lands that
link the coast to the plains in the
hinterland.

It contains very rare species of animals
and plants, such as the otter, which is an
endangered species in Italy. The river
Sele hosts one of the most important
populations of otters in Europe, which
confirms the quality of its waters.

The river bed of the Sele, along with the hills and
mountains, create a beautiful landscape. My father
often took the whole family to the springs of
Contursi Terme for a taste of its fresh and healthy
waters.

The surrounding Picentini mountains are at the
heart of this territory, and part of the Southern
Italian Appennino.

This mountain chain has been a host to countless
civilizations and cultures for millenniums, giving
them nourishment from its fertile lands and waters.
Nature flourishes wildly in this area crossed by
crystal clear rivers, where the flow of its waters
keeps pace with that of life and time.

where the sun burns flowers and grass. 

Happy, fortunate flowers, herbs born in grace,
where my lady often walks. 

Meadows that listen to her sweet words,
where her lovely feet leave their traces. 

Slender trees and fresh green foliage,
little loving pallid violets.

Shadowed woods, where the sun pierces,
which makes you proud and noble with her rays.

O gentle countryside, O pure stream, divine light:
how I envy you those true and graceful acts!

EBOLI

Sono nato nell'ospedale di nuova costruzione
di Eboli, una città situata a pochi chilometri da
Battipaglia, in Campania, nel sud dell’Italia.

Oggi è famosa per l'olio d'oliva e i suoi prodotti
caseari, e in particolare le rinomate mozzarelle
di bufala, che amo particolarmente. Ma Eboli è
anche un luogo affascinante che evoca con
fierezza antiche memorie del suo passato
romano, quando si chiamava Eburum.

Situata ai margini meridionali delle colline che
dominano la valle del Sele, gli scavi
archeologici dimostrano che l'area di Eboli è
abitata fin dall'età del bronzo.

La città fu distrutta da Alarico I° nel 410 d.C.,
poi fu invasa dai Saraceni nel X° secolo. Un
secolo dopo, fu una roccaforte del Principato di
Salerno, con un massiccio castello costruito
dal duca normanno Roberto il Guiscardo.

Eboli si trova ai piedi del Monte Raione che fa
parte del Parco Regionale dei Monti Picentini.

Al suo interno si trovano l'Oasi del World Wild
Life Fund di Persano e la Riserva Foce Sele,
un corridoio naturale di terre fertili e rigogliose
che collegano la costa alla pianura dell'entroterra.

Il parco ospita piante e animali molto rari, come la
lontra, specie in via di estinzione in Italia. Lungo il
fiume Sele che attraversa il parco si trova una
delle popolazioni di lontre più importanti
d'Europa, a riprova della qualità delle sue acque.

L'alveo del Sele, insieme alle colline e alle
montagne, creano un paesaggio di rara bellezza.
Mio padre portava spesso tutta la famiglia alle
sorgenti di Contursi Terme per assaporare le
sue acque fresche e salutari.

I monti Picentini circostanti si trovano al centro di
questo territorio, e fanno parte dell'Appennino
meridionale italiano.

Questa catena montuosa ha ospitato per
millenni innumerevoli civiltà e culture, nutrendole
con le sue acque e fertili terre.

La natura fiorisce rigogliosa in questa zona
attraversata da fiumi cristallini, dove lo scorrere
delle acque tiene il passo con quello della vita e
del tempo.

Non vide il mondo sì
leggiadri rami,

né mosse il vento mai
sì verdi fronde
