exciting installations, fun trivia plus tips and tricks in taking care of one’s skin.
The first-of-its-kind exhibit was well-received by the public, with audiences coming in as
late as midnight. Participants posted photos of the installations on social media using

he third and last learning activity of the PDS Laser Group for the year 2017
was an intimate gathering of 15 consultants and 13 residents (PGH, RITM,
TSLMC) held immediately after the PDS-CME hosted by the SLMC Department
of Dermatology. The main objective was to facilitate a basic understanding of laser
treatment for vascular skin lesions and its larger impact on current-day opportunity
for Filipinos via PhilHealth coverage with Dr. Ma. Pilar L. Leuenberger FPDS as the
resource speaker.
1) “#PDLinPH - Pulsed dye laser in the Philippines: Circa 21st Century”. PDL
technology made its first landing in our country via the SLMC Quezon City
Dermatology Center in 2001 followed by consultant-driven non-hospital based
centers such as Renergy Dermatology and Laser Center, VMV Skin Research
Center and Belo Medical Group. Eventual accessibility was offered in other
tertiary hospitals - The Medical City, Makati Medical Center, SLMC Global City
and for a period of time at Davao Doctors Hospital and Southern Philippines
Medical Center.
2) Vascular lasers afford destruction of blood vessels through heat energy with
oxyhemoglobin as the target chromophore. Usual clinical indications are
hemangiomas, port wine stains, scars, telangiectasia, acute striae, recurrent
periungual and plantar warts as well as pain management for pincer nails. The
long pulsed NdYAG laser may be used for deeper vascular lesions which is the
limitation of the pulsed dye laser.
3) PhilHealth coverage of laser treatment for select vascular indications remains active
and possible, if done in PhilHealth-accredited treatment centers with the proper
equipment by PhilHealth-accredited doctors, who are specifically diplomates or
fellows of the Philippine Dermatological Society.

Dr. Melissa Sandejas, FPDS
he SKINWEEK is an annual nationwide
campaign launched in November 2000,
Tby the Philippine Dermatological Society
(PDS). Its advocacy is to uplift the skin health of
Filipinos through education and early disease
detection, treatment and prevention. Last
November 5-29, 2017, the PDS, in partnership
with the Department of Health, successfully
observed the 18th National Skin Disease
Detection and Prevention Week.
With such awareness, we are proud to report
that there was an increase in the number of free
clinics and patients served, compared to the
previous years. With the help of our generous
volunteer members, we were able to hold 87
clinics nationwide with about 10,500 patients
served. The missions were held in various regions
of the country, ensuring that our campaign had
a nationwide-reach. Aside from the 39 clinics
held in Metro Manila, there were 10 held in
Northern Luzon, (Isabela, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos
Sur, Pangasinan and Quirino), 10 in Central Luzon
(Bataan, Bulacan, Pampanga, Tarlac and Nueva
Ecija), 14 in Southern Luzon (Oriental Mindoro,
Batangas, Cavite, Laguna and Quezon), 5 In the
Bicol/Visayas region (Albay, Cebu, Iloilo, Naga
City and Sorsogon) and 9 in Mindanao (Cagayan
de Oro City, Zamboanga del Norte, Tacurong
City, Davao City, North Cotabato and Butuan).
Each of the free clinics were organized and
participated in by civic-minded PDS members,
either voluntarily on their own, or through their
PDS regional chapter or training institution.
It has always been the time generously shared
by participating PDS members that make the PDS
SKINWEEK project a success every year. And, we
look forward to even more volunteers in the
SKINWEEKs to come!

THE SAPPHIRE BALL
in Celebration of
PDS’ 65 years
November 9 2017. EDSA Shangri-la Ballroom
Dr. Mylah Joven-Ching, FPDS
NIGHT TO REMEMBER. A NIGHT TO BE CARVED IN OUR
MEMORIES. This year’s Fellowship Night in Sapphire
A Blue celebrated the 65 glorious years of the Philippine
Dermatological Society (PDS). In an evening of glamour, fun
and friendship, all the ladies came in their beautiful gowns of
various azure hues and the PDS gents came in their blue dashing
best. Dinner was a delightful culinary decadence from different
countries as our dynamic hosts Jenny Jamora and Ricci Chan took
us around the world in search for the Blue Sapphire.
Stunning performances highlighted the much-awaited evening.
Truly admirable were the time and effort all the institutions
and chapters put into their presentations, all for the love of
PDS! The UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS wowed us with their
interpretation on the traditional and pop street culture of Japan.
OSPITAL NG MAYNILA MEDICAL CENTER took us to the land
down under, Australia, where the koalas and kangaroos roam.
The SOUTHERN LUZON CHAPTER got us dancing to their catchy
Mexican beat and just as we were catching our breath, RITM/
ASIAN HOSPITAL caused our whole bodies to shake with their
Brazilian bonanza! Next was a trip to the African continent where
the wild JRMMMC animals roamed. EAST AVENUE MEDICAL
CENTER showed us their belly moves from the Middle East,
truly titillating! Captivating Cuban rhythms dominated ST LUKE’S
MEDICAL CENTER’s performance while UP-PGH made us laugh
with their awesome Chinese Ninja theatrics. The CENTRAL LUZON
CHAPTER transported us to another world with their traditional
Korean and oppa Gangnam styles in their catchy medley. MAKATI
MEDICAL CENTER revealed that India is not just about Bollywood
by juxtaposing their dance with a catchy chill Indian vibe. The
SOUTHERN PHILIPPINES CHAPTER chose to veer from the norm
by showcasing the designers and fabrics of their region in a fashion
display serenaded with opera music excellently rendered by Dr.
Angeli San Pedro-Garcia. The SOUTHERN PHILIPPINES MEDICAL
CENTER spiced things up with their UK-based 90’s girl band Spice
Girls lip sync. SKIN AND CANCER FOUNDATION gave us soldiers
and superheroes from our make-believe world while UERMMMC
bared their hot Spanish blood! Capping off the evening’s
performances was the gilded and glittery Thai costumes and
drama of the NORTHERN LUZON CHAPTER. We were all in unison
as we claimed that this night was superbly a feast for the senses!
If only the night would never end… before the festivities
concluded, kudos was given to the best dressed lady and
gentleman, “The Stars of the Night”. The judges were in awe, as
everyone looked equally gorgeous or handsome; but they have
to render a tough decision…and the WINNERS were Dr. Maria
Sheilah Lacuna Pangan and Dr. Rataporn Ungpakorn. Cheers!
