Religious/Hebrew School under the leadership of Tobee Waxenberg! Larry was formerly an institutional bond broker

becoming a Commercial Insurance Broker with Brown & Brown for the past 10 years. He attended the U of A and The
Thunderbird School of Global Management and he’s an active member of the Men’s Arts Council, a philanthropic

experience as a statistician in medical research.

philanthropy from Israel Bonds to being the Vice President of Temple Ohabei Shalom in charge of Fundraising. She has
had many careers: a school teacher, owning and operating two retail stores in Boston, and Public Relations. One of her

Thank you for your service!
Social Action at Temple Solel—Family Promise Highlight
Family Promise at Solel December 22-29
A small army of more than 70 Solel members, staff, and friends joined forces to welcome four first-time homeless
families to Solel for a week. Groceries were purchased, breakout rooms transformed into bedrooms, meals were
planned, prepared, and served, waffles and pancakes made, after dinner activities created, overnight chaperones
bunked in the library, room dividers made, breakdown crews and laundry teams finished the week. Together we
helped families through a difficult week in their lives by sharing our sacred space and showing support and kindness to
those in need. We also strengthened our own community and built friendships by working together and performing
tikkun olam.
Family Promise Host Week April 12-19
This wasn’t the host week we expected. Unlike the week in December when we transformed the Social Hall into four
bedrooms and a dining hall/activity center, the Family Promise families are now being housed at their Day Centers. This
is not an ideal situation, however, Solel volunteers have rallied to provide groceries and dinners for the week. We
provided nourishment for seven homeless families including 14 adults and 13 children for the week. Many thanks to
Judy Schaffert, Martha Lieberman, Catherine Kasper, Tobee Waxenberg and Raker Religious School, Judy Rosen, Jamie
Lieberman, Frank Rader, and Lynn Weissman. For dinner one evening, I ordered food from a local restaurant to be
delivered to the Family Promise Day Center and spoke to their assistant manager. When I told her where the food was
to be delivered she shared with me that she and her young son had been homeless a couple of years ago. They became
part of the Family Promise program, got back on their feet and are now doing well. This is what we are helping to make
possible as we volunteer our time and efforts in support of Family Promise.
Your continued support through contributions to the Solel Family Promise Fund are very appreciated and can be made
online at https://www.templesolel.org/contribute/ or via call to the office at 480-991-7414, ext. 127.

Temple Solel Endowment Foundation
President’s Annual Report FYE 6-30-20
The primary purpose of the Temple Solel Endowment Foundation (the “Foundation”), an independent not for profit
corporation, is to collect, invest, manage and distribute funds that strengthen and advance the mission of Temple Solel
(“Solel”) and its congregants.
Funds of the Foundation are professionally managed by Morgan Stanley under an investment policy established and
approved by the Foundation Board of Directors.
Highlights for 2019:
In late 2016, the Foundation purchased at par the $309 thousand remaining balance of the note from Mutual of
Omaha Bank leaving only friendly debt.
The Foundation provided invaluable asset protection by moving ownership of the Solel campus to a subsidiary of the
Foundation. Furthermore, Solel now pays annual rent of $53 thousand to the Foundation, which is forced savings for
the Temple’s own benefit, much like an individual making contributions to their own 401(k) to ensure their future.
Current assets under management at Morgan Stanley rose from $1.0 million on 12-31-18 up to $1.3 million as of 12-31-
19; a 30% increase. As of 3-30-20 the balance was $1.1 million, with the decline from 12-31-19 centered in market
volatility from the COVID-19 Pandemic. The Foundation’s next interim goal is $3 million, providing a strong security
blanket to Solel. Our ultimate goal is $10 million which, at a 5% return would generate $500 thousand of annual
income. This represents about 12.5% of Temple Solel’s $4 million annual budget.
For 2019, the Foundation showed total income of $279 thousand. Key drivers include:
Type Amount %
Contributions $ 68 thousand 24%
Gain on securities $131 thousand 47%
Interest and dividends $ 27 thousand 10%
Rental income $ 53 thousand 19%
Totals $279 thousand 100%
More recently, I am proud that during my term and in these uncertain times, the Foundation accelerated a distribution
to Temple Solel in order to help backstop its current liquidity needs arising from our ever changing environment during
this unprecedented pandemic.
As President, I have had the pleasure of working with fellow Foundation Board members who donate their time,
expertise, and wisdom. Furthermore, I am proud to report that 100% of this group have made personal contributions
to the Foundation either in the form of a current or legacy gift and in many cases both.
Lastly, the Foundation Board is pleased to announce that we recently made a $72 thousand contribution to Temple
Solel. This act alone shows the positive impact the Foundation can make on Temple Solel and its members, hopefully
encouraging further interest in both current and legacy contributions.
Respectfully submitted,
Nelson A. Lerner, President
