9 Practicing And Modeling Routines In One Sentence Practicing and modeling instructions are teaching strategies that involve demonstrating a skill or process and then providing students with opportunities to practice the skill or process. Consistent routines also give us time and energy to handle anything else that comes up in the classroom. Research Data / The Hattie Check Practicing and modeling instructions have a moderate effect size (d=0.40), which means that they can be an effective tool for improving student learning. A study found that modeling and practicing classroom routines was one of the most effective classroom management strategies. What's the Point? Classroom stability and increased teacher energy. Help students to learn new skills or processes. Promote student engagement and motivation. Help students to develop self-regulation skills. How is this used by teachers? Demonstrating the skill or process step-by-step. Providing opportunities for students to practice the skill or process. Providing feedback on student performance. Gradual release of responsibility: Gradually reducing the amount of support they provide as students become more proficient. How is this used by students? Receive a consistent classroom experience. Practicing the skill or process until they are proficient. Reflecting on their own performance and adjusting as needed. Here are some additional tips for using Practicing and Modeling Instructions: Make sure that the demonstration is clear and concise. Use simple language that students can understand. Provide opportunities for students to practice the skill or process in a variety of ways. Give feedback on student performance in a timely and constructive manner. Be patient and encouraging.
