6 // 50th Annual KBY Dinner

Greeting

Message from the President
of American Friends of KBY

The Talmud teaches, “Ten li Yavneh v’chachameha” - “Give me the
yeshiva at Yavneh and its Torah sages.” This passage has defined the
classic formula for Jewish survival which withstood more than 1900 years
of exile from Eretz Yisrael, and remains as relevant today as it was then.
The founding Rosh HaYeshiva, HaRav Chayim Yaakov Goldvicht, zt”l,
made Kerem B’Yavneh the successful prototype for the Hesder Yeshiva
concept, and perfectly suited for the realities of Eretz Yisrael today.

Tonight, at the 50th Annual Dinner, we celebrate the Yeshiva as an
institution that puts forth Torah learning and care for its talmidim before
anything else. No matter what the circumstances bring, the sound of
Torah learning will always be resonating within the walls of the Beit
Midrash. It is exactly this characteristic of Yeshiva that is the unique
niche that it fills in the modern formula for Jewish survival.

Abba mori, Mr. Bernard Hochstein, z”l, founded the American Friends
of KBY, to help lead the organization and make it possible for KBY to
continuously grow and carry out its critical mission on behalf of Torah,
Klal Yisrael, and Jewish survival.

We, the members of the next generation, are rededicating ourselves to
the same principles that inspired the multitudes of KBY students, past
and present, wherever they may be around the world, and to the support
of yeshiva as it strives for even greater accomplishments yet to come.
Michael Hochstein

8 // 50th Annual KBY Dinner

Message from the Chairman of the
Executive Committee of KBY,

As we celebrate the 50th annual dinner of the American Friends of
KBY, we can take pride in the essential role that Yeshiva has played in
developing a steady stream of inspired young leaders for Klal Yisrael,
dedicated to inspire Jews in communities throughout the world to live
more Torah-enriched lives.

KBY has remained true to the original vision of its founder, HaRav
Chayim Yaakov Goldvicht, zt”l. Sixty-nine years ago, he developed a fully
integrated approach to the contemporary challenges facing Eretz Yisrael
and Klal Yisrael. As the vanguard of the Hesder yeshiva movement, KBY
developed the prototype for future generations of the Torah scholars/
soldiers. Over the last few years, the Yeshiva has continued on its path
with the energies of the new young and vibrant staff members who
have been able to ensure the steadfastness to the vision of old as it
prepares for the future. Led by the Roshei Yeshiva, HaRav Gavriel Saraf
and HaRav Aharon Friedman, Ramim who are constantly listening to the
talmidim’s needs as well as the Executive Director, Mr. Zvi Zelser, who
supports those efforts with his energy and creative thinking, KBY has
maintained the vision of being a central Torah institution that provides a
home to its talmidim and a Beit Midrash at all times no matter what the
circumstance.

The talmidim of KBY are devoted to their studies day and night, dedicated
to mastering the wisdom of the Talmud and the Mesorah, and integrating
within that wisdom the lessons to be learned from science, medicine, law
and academia. These fine young students bring their love for Torah that
was internalized through the non-stop learning while in Yeshiva so they
can inspire the world Jewish community.

Message from the Director of KBY

Dear Alumni and Friends of the Yeshiva,

Shalom!

We have experienced a challenging period and have, Baruch Hashem, emerged
stronger from it. Many students remained in Yeshiva for long periods of time without
leaving the country in order to ensure continued Torah learning during Corona, much
like soldiers in the field. We have great appreciation for our students and for the
families who stand behind them.

Now that everyone has had, Baruch Hashem, a chance to go home and recharge, we
started Zman Elul in Yeshiva with joy and great hopes for a more normal year.

Zman Elul and the Chagim were wonderful experiences here and we daven that we will
dive into a similarly successful year.

In the Yeshiva, there are a total of 300 students and 60 avrechim, among them 80
students from all over the world, including 6 soldiers serving in the Israeli army. Baruch
Hashem they are not alone and the Yeshiva serves as their home.

We are planning many events and projects in Yeshiva this coming year. We are focusing
on the theme of learning Torah no matter the situation in light of the past year's
challenges of Corona and unrest on the Southern border. This has always been a priority
here and will continue as such, b'Ezrat Hashem.

As part of this, we are preparing to build a large multi-purpose area that will also serve
as a shelter so that the students can learn safely even during emergency times.

I take this opportunity to thank the alumni and friends and the American Friends
organization who are donating a Sefer Torah to mark the 70th anniversary of the Yeshiva.
They greatly strengthen us. I invite everyone to participate in this exciting campaign.

The deep cooperation between the Yeshiva and its alumni and friends is one of the
cornerstones of the Yeshiva. It is from your support that we derive the strength to
continue Kerem B'Yavneh's mission of transmitting Torah to the next generation.

We invite each of you to come visit the Yeshiva with your family and to again taste the
special atmosphere of Kerem B'Yavneh, where we all learned and grew.

Wishing health and nachat to you and your families.

Memorial

HaRav Chayim Yaakov Goldvicht, zt"l

KBY’s founding Rosh HaYeshiva, HaRav Chayim Yaakov Goldvicht, zt"l, was a
Talmid of both the Brisker Rav and the Chazon Ish. He started Yeshivat Kerem
B'Yavneh in 1954 (5714) with 12 graduates of Yeshivot B'nei Akiva.

As they neared draft age, the boys felt an obligation to take an active role in the
defense of Israel, in addition to continuing their Torah learning. HaRav Goldvicht’s
solution was the invention of the "Hesder" program, in which students would
make a five-year commitment divided
between Torah learning and active duty
army service.

As the originator of the Yeshivot Hesder
concept, HaRav Goldvicht received the Israel
Prize, the nation's highest honor, in 1991. He
passed away on 7 Adar I 5755 (February 7,
1995), after establishing KBY as one of the
greatest yeshivot in Israel and the world.

Soldiers of Israel Missing in Action

We will never forget, nor give up hope for the safe return of all of our
sons whose fate remains unknown, after putting their lives on the line
to defend our homeland, the State of Israel.
Yehuda Katz, an outstanding matmid and talmid chochom who
attended KBY in the late 1970’s, has been missing since the Battle of
Sultan Yakoub in Lebanon in June, 1982. The Yehuda Ya’aleh library
has been established at KBY in his honor, and his brother comes to the
Yeshiva each year to tell our students about him.
We pray for the return of all the missing soldiers of Israel. We will not
let the world forget them.

In Memory of Eli Klein

Eli Klein became the Director of KBY in 1964. He gave his heart and soul
to the Yeshiva for more than 50 years, and during that period, he was
KBY’s most effective ambassador to its supporters around the world.
Working closely with the founding Rosh HaYeshiva, HaRav Goldvicht,
Mr. Klein also deserved much of the credit for building the Yeshiva’s
campus into the beautiful, makom Torah it is today.

Born in Germany, he arrived in the United States as a boy with his
family, via England, in 1940. He graduated from Yeshiva University,
served as a chaplain in the US Air Force, and later as Director of Bnei
Akiva of North America before making Aliyah in 1955 with his wife,
Chava.

Mr. Klein’s many friends and KBY colleagues
deeply valued his wise advice. He maintained his
relationships with generations of students as they
went on to become KBY parents and supporters in
their own right. A true gentleman, his quiet dignity
and humility was a model of Torah, midos, and yiras
shomayim.

KBY -
Yesterday and Today

History of Yeshivat Kerem B'Yavneh

In the 1930's, the Mizrachi movement and its spiritual leader, Chief Rabbi Avrohom Yitzchok
Kook, wanted to found a new yeshiva near the site of the original Yavneh founded by
Rav Yochanan ben Zakkai. It constructed the shell of the current KBY Beit Midrash on land
provided by the Jewish National Fund, shortly before the 1948 War of Independence.
HaRav Chayim Yaakov Goldvicht founded KBY there in 1954. Rav Goldvicht was awarded
the Israel Prize, it’s highest honor, in 1991. Under his leadership over the next forty years,
he established KBY as one of Israel’s leading yeshivot. He also initiated KBY’s Overseas
Students Program, to instill students from around the world with a deep and abiding love of
Torah and the Land of Israel.

30 // 50th Annual KBY Dinner

The Overseas Student Program

Outstanding post-high school and college students from around the world, mostly English
speakers from the United States, England, and South Africa, are selected each year to
participate in KBY’s Overseas Student Program, with its own faculty of Rabbeim and
Mashgichim. They live and study with Israeli students, with the interaction of cultures part
of their unique learning experience, which will serve as the bedrock of their intellectual and
spiritual achievements for the rest of their lives.
Over 800 of them have made Aliyah and settled in Israel. Many have chosen to continue their
Torah educations and eventually become lay and rabbinic leaders in Orthodox communities
around the world.

Meet a KBY Student

The young men with fine midot who come to KBY are the finest products of yeshiva high
schools throughout the United States and other Jewish communities around the world.
Others are students at Yeshiva University who have chosen KBY for their year of study
abroad, and many come from families that have been sending their sons to KBY for two or
three generations.
A KBY student’s day starts at 6:50 A.M. with Shacharit in the Beit Medrash, followed by
breakfast in the main dining hall. The First Seder begins at 9:00 A.M. in the Beit Midrash,
followed by a Gemara Shiur at noon. Following a break and Mincha, the Second Seder gives
them an opportunity to learn with an older chavruta, followed by Overseas Chugim and a
Seder in Mussar before Maariv and supper. Students are also frequently invited to the nearby
homes of KBY staff members for a relaxed evening Bayit Cham.

Rabbanei HaYeshiva

Nasi HaYeshiva - HaRav Mordechai Greenberg

Maran HaRav Mordechai Greenberg, Shlit''a, served for 23 years as Rosh
HaYeshiva, following in the footsteps of his Rebbe, HaRav Chayim Yaakov
Goldvicht, zt"l. He is a graduate of KBY who fought in the Six Day War and
