EARLY
EDUCATION
ADMINISTRATION OF ARCHIVES (IMR455)
Early Education
At the tender age of six years old, P. Ramlee was showing interest in going to school when his
father had to bring him along to his workplace at a lead (timah) smelting factory which is located
not far from the said school. That school is Sekolah Melayu Kampung Jawa, founded in 1887 and
has known renamed as Sekolah Kebangsaan Tan Sri P. Ramlee in the honor of P. Ramlee himself
who enrolled in the school there and became a part of the school community. P. Ramlee's father
also noted how P. Ramlee would always peek through the windows of the school and expressed
his attentiveness for learning despite being so young. Yet, the teacher at the school grants his
enrollment for class and has him registered for ‘darjah sekerat’ (preschool class). He was also noted
to be a bright student during his time attending school there. This was the start of P. Ramlee’s
education history.
ADMINISTRATION OF ARCHIVES (IMR455) 7
Afterwards, P. Ramlee continued his studies at Francis Light English
School from 1939 to 1941 until he was standard five then World War II
broke out. From there, he went to Penang Free School (PFS), located
at Green Lane in Georgetown which was founded in 1816 and also
known as the oldest English-medium school in Southeast Asia. This
school is also known to be an all-boys school but now girls are also
able to be admitted for Form 6.
FIGURE 3 : (First from left) P. Ramlee Moreover, during his time as a student at Penang Free School, he
sitting in front row at Francis Light English was registered as “Ramlee” by his father and at this time, his real
name, Teuku Zakaria wasn’t suitable with other children. At this
School school, P. Ramlee wasn’t fond of books and the like as a student and
also reportedly known as a reluctant and naughty student. Instead, P.
Ramlee was talented in music and football. This was when he
showed interest in music.
ADMINISTRATION OF ARCHIVES (IMR455) 8
In the school, P. Ramlee has studied musical instruments such as guitar and viola from Encik
Kamaruddin, whomst at that time took the position of a leader of the brass band plays at the Penang
Free School. Prior to his musical education at school, P. Ramlee has also learned to play ukulele and
his knowledge in music grew bigger and bigger. After regaining more grip at music with his previous
studying, he was able to participate in countless shows such as Orkes Teruna Sekampung and Sinaran
Bintang Sore.
Unfortunately, his studies at Penang Free School were disrupted because of the interruption of the
Japanese occupation from 1942 until 1945, and was forced to enroll in the Japanese navy academy
(Kaigun Gakko) in order to continue his studies. Regardless, it was here that P. Ramlee received his
foundation in music and learnt the basics of music. In the academy he was taught and able to sing
Japanese songs throughout his time here with the guidance of his teacher which is known as Hirahe-
san.
When the Second World War came to an end, P. Ramlee continued to pursue his interest in music
and took on private music lessons and he was able to read music notations resulting from his musical
studies. Afterwards, he went on and further sharpened his skills and developed his knowledge.
