By Angelette Arias, J.D. Angelette Arias Chapter President

In 1913, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated developed an interest in creating community service programs across the country under a Five-Point Program

Thrust. As a result of that implementation and success, community service programs have also spanned internationally in Delta chapters across the globe. Delta women

of the Fort Myers Alumnae Chapter also became serious about serving the needs of people in this community of all ages since 1965. Therefore, they followed the mission

of the Founders and implemented public service programs that allowed them to channel their intellect and skills in areas of life where our community could receive the

most assistance. The program thrusts that were created by the Founders include issues that affect all human beings in our society. I am proud of the Chairpersons of the

Fort Myers Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for the 2021-2022 sorority year, their fortitude and leadership in serving our community!

Economic Development Chair, Mrs. Monica Broughton, a principal with the Lee County School District, is planning with her committee an upcoming program
that will enhance the chapter’s concerns about the economic factors in our community. The development of Financial Fortitude, the current Economic Development pro-
gram initiative of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, is a process that will help program participants to set and define goals, develop a plan to achieve them, and
to put the plan into action. Theis initiative is comprised of ten components and provides a collaboration of information from major economic corporations and financial
institutions. The ten components include: Goal Setting, Financial Planning, Budgeting, Debt Management, Savings & Investments, Retirement Planning, Homeownership,
Insurance, Estate Planning, and Entrepreneurship. The initiative helps members of the sorority design programs to spread financial education throughout our community.

Educational Development Chair, Ms. Jeredine Ware, an educator, with the Lee County School District of more than 20 years has been Chairing the sorority’s
Delta Academy program for middle school girls ages 11 to 14, as well as the Delta GEMS program for high school girls ages 14-19 for several years. Her pleasant
presence, strong educational background, and her patient spirit makes any parent feel at ease with mentoring their child. Extensive training is provided by the sorority
for all members engaged with children, as well as for the parents and volunteers. Ms. Ware leads the training of the Delta Academy and Delta GEMS in courtesies, or-
ganizational skills, defense safety, exposure to cultural events in the area of arts and letters, as well as etiquette skills. Most recently, the sorority’s Socks for Seniors
event provided the Delta Academy and Delta GEMS an opportunity to donate hundreds of socks to comfort and protect seniors at the Sandy Park Development Center.

International Awareness and Involvement Chair, Mrs. Shirley Burns, is no stranger to the Dunbar Community. Mrs. Burns led in the education and training of
hundreds of children during her retirement years. Mrs. Burns established a program that was extremely instrumental and educational to children from all races and
cultures as they were developing into higher grade levels. In that spirit, Mrs. Burns understood the call for chairing the International Awareness and Involvement
Committee. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated implemented this program internationally to assist families in need from other countries.

Physical and Mental Health Chair, Dr. Alyson Sanchious, has been a pioneer in educating the community on Breast Cancer Awareness, facts about Diabetes, Covid-
19 and other health tips. Dr. Sanchious was one of four panelists in the recent Facts vs. Fiction Panel Discussion hosted by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority in partnership
with Mount Olive A.M.E. Church. Due to the enormous amount of health issues that African Americans struggle with in America, Dr. Sanchious, her committee, and
members of Delta Sigma Theta who are medical doctors, Dr. Denise Davis and Dr. Tanya Anim, are also instrumental in educating sorority members about healthcare
and how to choose the right healthcare provider they need to stay healthy.

Political Awareness and Involvement/Social Action Chair, Ms. Geraldine Ware, is a strong advocate for educating the community on the important political issues
that impact our county. Ms. Ware has been consistent and dedicated over several years with setting up voter registration and education drives in the community. This
effort allows citizens ages 18 years and older an opportunity to register to vote so that their voices can be heard. In 2019, Ms. Ware also organized and spearheaded a
charter bus for the community to educate them and commemorate the March in Selma, Alabama where the late Rep. John Lewis was beaten by police on the Edmund
Pettus Bridge, on what is historically known as “Bloody Sunday.”

Congratulations to our Delta Chairpersons For Your Leadership

The Fort Myers Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated celebrated its 109th Founders Day on Saturday, January 22, 2022, at the Embassy
Suites Estero in Estero, Florida. More than one hundred fifty guests attended this elegant affair. Attendees included community leaders, government officials and
families and friends of the Chapter as well as visiting sorors from Collier and Sarasota Counties and other states across the nation. The keynote speaker for the event
was Rev. Dr. Gwendolyn E. Boyd, the 22nd National President of the Sorority. It was evident from the response that she received from the audience that she was the
reason that interest in attending the event was exceptionally high. She spoke primarily on the topic of Social Justice and the change that is needed to propel all Americans
forward in order for us to have a promising future. Dr. Boyd, the first African American female to complete a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Yale
University, was also the first female and 14th President of Alabama State University. The audience listened with rapt attention as she delivered a very powerful historical
and spiritual speech. The Founders Day Committee should be proud of its efforts in leading the way and presenting such an important event that will forever be
remembered by members of our community and those who traveled from afar to hear Dr. Boyd.

address followed by Ms. Constance White-Davis who gave a historically glorifying reading of the occasion. Ms. Annette Booker gave an insightful reading of the na-
tional history and local chapter’s chartering and history. Following the initial portion of the program, the guests were entertained by Mr. Howard Sapp, a spiritual and
soulful soloist, who graced the audience with uplifting songs. Mayor Kevin Anderson presented the key to the City of Fort Myers to Rev. Dr. Gwendolyn E. Boyd,
followed by Ms. Anne Chisholm who gave a spiritual invocation. Guests enjoyed a delicious lunch and then received a very informative social action message from
Mrs. Shirley Burns. Mrs. Angelette Arias continued this momentous occasion with a very moving introduction of the Keynote Speaker, Rev. Dr. Gwendolyn E.
Boyd. Dr. Boyd gave a prolific and motivational keynote address to the captive audience. Mr. Earl Sparrow, a prestigious pianist, played the historic Greek medley for

minds about the importance of public service and the impact it makes on our communities. This is the mission of the Fort Myers Alumnae Chapter.

A Youthful Challenge

by Olivia Abdul Alim

Who will bear life burdens.
Who will uphold life truths.
The elders who have earned their wisdom
Or the flame of the impulsive youth.

Who will challenge Americas' history.
Who will make his story yours.
Who will undo the shackles of racism
That binds tight around freedoms' doors.

Who will carve out the road of destiny
That every creature must tread.
Who will promise new life for the living
And give hope to the dying dead.

Men's hearts yearn for one more breath
A solemn struggle for its life.
Yet, so painfully near to his own death
From grief and worldly strife.

An eternity, we spent in the shadows
Confused, as to what was right.
A lifetime of sad misfortune
May it spare us a moment in the light.

So, who will carry their burden
And who shall whisper their song.
What will give all men justice
In a world that has gone terribly wrong.
