Women’s Health Navigator:
Guiding women to better health with great personal service
What is a women’s health navigator?
A women’s health navigator is a registered nurse who is dedicated to guiding you and
your family through healthcare experiences at every stage of life. At Adirondack Health,
Jessica Duhaime, RN, RNC-OB, IBCLC, is the women’s health navigator. She is the GPS for
our patients.
Why do I need a women’s health navigator?
The staff at Adirondack Health is dedicated, caring and professional, providing quality nurs-
ing care and support. Jessica, as the women’s health navigator, will help you and your family
with the ins and outs of women’s healthcare. Perhaps you need someone to explain in detail
what your doctor prescribed. Maybe you need guidance in finding a specialist to make an
appointment. Or perhaps you have a personal health question and want to speak with
someone you can trust.
What services does a women’s health navigator provide?
The job of a women’s health navigator differs from patient to patient. Jessica offers
personalized care and her guidance depends on your stage of life and unique circumstances.
She can answer any of your healthcare questions, ranging from when to start getting PAP
tests to fertility, from labor and lactation support to post childbearing years through
menopause and postmenopause. Jessica helps you and your family care for the entire body,
no matter the stage of life.

Well Women Care

Throughout every stage of a woman’s life there are recommended tests
and screening that should be completed to maintain good overall health
and wellness. This guide lists the recommended screenings and at what
age each one should be performed. All of these screening and tests can
be ordered by your family doctor, or they can refer you to the
appropriate specialist if needed.
Enclosed is a short directory of local physicians and community programs
to assist you in navigating through the complex world of well women care.
Not everything, nor everyone is mentioned in this resource tool. If you do
not see what you are looking for, contact our women’s health navigator
and she will guide you in the right direction.
By taking the time to learn about your health and wellness,
you are one step closer to being a well woman!
These screenings take moments of your

Ages 9-18: Every Girl
Becomes a Woman
The beginning of the women’s health journey ...
• Women’s health starts early. Begin a discussion with your daughter and
your daughter’s pediatrician about not only overall wellness, but about
sexual and reproductive health as well. This starts well before adulthood.
• According to the Center for Disesase Control and Prevention, there are
14 million new HPV infections in the US each year.
• HPV is a sexually transmitted disease that can cause genital warts,
cervical and other cancers.
• 50% of these cases occur in 15-24 year olds.
• It is recommended that children be vaccinated against HPV starting
at the age of 9.
• Childhood obesity has more than double in children and quadrupled
in adolescence in the past 30 years.
• It is extremely important to start healthy habits in childhood.
Educate and encourage a healthy lifestyle. Promote daily activity
and healthy eating.
• Why is this so important? Childhood obesity has not only immediate
consequences but long term effects on health and well being.
“An ounce of prevention is
worth a pound of cure.”

for girls to visit.

Ages 18 - 39:
The Childbearing Years
This is when your well women care really starts. You will be introduced
to screenings you will have many times throughout your life.
These years will be the foundation of a lifetime of wellness.
These tests and screenings can be initiated with your primary care
provider. It is very important to have an annual exam with a healthcare
provider you know and who knows you. If you have not established a
relationship with a doctor yet, we suggest you do so.
Please see the directory attached for a list of local healthcare offices
currently taking new patients.

forms of cancer in 2004.
• Heart Disease affects both men and women, but women are more

Mental Health
From the time a girl reaches puberty until about the age of 50, she is twice as
likely as a man to have an anxiety disorder.
Women are also more likely than men to have multiple psychiatric disorders
during their lifetime. The most common to co-occur are anxiety with depression.
Differences in brain chemistry may account for at least part of this.
“Good mental health is an important
part of a woman’s overall health.”
There are numerous different mental illnesses a woman may suffer
from throughout her lifetime, including but not limited to:
• Alcoholism/Substance Abuse
• Anxiety
• Depression
• Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD)
• Bipolar Disorder
• Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
• Eating Disorders
A mental health screening should be done at least once per year as part
of your annual exam with your doctor. Discuss concerns openly with your
healthcare provider at anytime!
