Education

Variety’s Education Program provides underprivileged
children and at-risk youth the programs necessary to pursue
their education and dreams and overcome the barriers of
poverty and poor performing schools. Education grants fund
early literacy programs, college scholarships, homework
assistance, college prep, career readiness, art, music, science
and technology workshops, gang prevention counseling and
mentoring programs.

One of the first hurdles Corey faced while in school was
overcoming a learning disability that placed him on a low
academic track. When Corey realized that his ability to
attend college would be jeopardized by not being exposed
to college prep classes he joined a mentoring program
supported by a Variety Education Grant. Corey took college
prep courses to make up academic credits. His hard work
paid off. After starting high school in remedial courses, he
finished high school in advanced placement courses and
eligible to attend a four year college. Circumstances outside
of school made Corey’s academic accomplishments even
more remarkable. In 2016, two of Corey’s brothers passed
away and he and his mother became homeless. Corey
spent his last two years of high school sleeping on living
room floors hoping that his mother would be able to find an
affordable apartment in Los Angeles. Many kids in Corey’s
shoes would have quit. Corey did not. He used the mentoring
program as a support system and developed positive coping
strategies to deal with stress and continued to push forward.

attending San Francisco State University on
a Variety Scholarship and pursuing his dream
of being a music producer!

Mobility

Variety’s Mobility Program provides confidence,
freedom, and much-needed therapeutic exercise
for children with disabilities by providing specially-
designed adaptive bikes. These bikes are not covered
by insurance and are often out of reach financially
for families caring for children with special needs.
Many of them cannot walk on their own, so when
they receive a bike specially designed for their needs,
their disabilities fade away and they experience the
pure joy of riding a bike like any other kid. 

Isaiah

Isaiah is an 8 year old boy with Duchenne’s Muscular
Dystrophy. In the past year, he has lost the ability to walk. He
has never been able to ride a bike but has always dreamed
about it. He tried an adaptive bike at therapy, and in his words
thought it was “an epic experience”. Isaiah’s Mom thanked
Variety and with tears in her eyes said, “I never thought I
would see my son ride a bike”. May 4th, 2019 was an “epic”

day— it was the day Isaiah’s dream came true!!

Alexis

Alexis is a beautiful 6 year old girl. She is nonverbal, non-
ambulatory and diagnosed with cerebral palsy, movement
disorder, and epilepsy. She enjoys Mickey Mouse, bubbles,
and all things involving food. “We are honored to have received
this adaptive bike from the Variety Organization – it means the
world to us. Not only will this adaptive bike help Alexis build up
her muscle strength and help with her walking, it will get her up
and out seeing the world like her older brother and sister do on
their bikes. We can’t thank you enough for gifting us this bike!”

Having grown up with Bob I know what a big part
of his life sports has played. I clearly remember
during our years in junior high how much fun
we had playing ball; whether it was football in
the street, a parking, or in the snow. Great times
growing up. It was really something that drew us
together. It's great he's helping others have the
opportunity to have like experiences. Very proud
