Foundation Serving the people of Thailand for 125 years, Saint Louis Hospital administrators initially established a practical nursing school in 1977 to produce nursing assistants in the hospitals. However, the need to produce professional nurses formed in Christian values and known for excellence and compassionate service remained. Hence, after eight years, through the inspiration of His Eminence Most Reverend Michael Cardinal Michai Kitbunchu and dedicated efforts of Sr. Clemence, SPC, Dr. Mana Buncanpun and Dr. Boonsom Martin, Saint Louis Nursing College opened in August 5, 1985. SLNC became the 4th private higher educational institute and the 13th among higher educational institute in Thailand to offer a nursing science program. On November 26, 1999, in its commitment of being a leading health science college, it was renamed Saint Louis College. The psychology program was offered to answer the demands of that time. This was followed by the opening of the English and Physical Therapy programs. Heritage - Catholic Tradition: Our Identity, Our Mission With the philosophy “where there is mercy, there is God” (Deus Caritas Ibi Deus Est), Saint Louis College’s Christian mission of quality education to the people of Thailand amidst the diversity of faiths and multi-cultural environment endures to this day. It has steadfastly produce graduates who excel in their fields and integrate academic excellence and professional ethical values as it uphold Thai culture and tradition, and carry on the Catholic spirit of service to society. Akin to the water jasmine or moke tree planted 39 years ago by Pope John Paul II to commence its establishment, Saint Louis College has now grown and bloom in sharing its gifts for the enrichment of the people of Thailand. Its Christian vision to become a premier health science institution, at par with ASEAN internationally recognized universities and colleges, endures as it produces future compassionate health science leaders. Location The college is located at the heart of metropolitan Bangkok and is easily accessible through major highways and all means of transportation. The maincampus is within Saint Louis Hospital Complex and the other at St. Michael campus which is less than a kilometer away. 10

Saint Louis College Faculty of Nursing The Faculty of Nursing of Saint Louis College (SLC FON) aims to develop in their nursing students the virtue of kind-heartedness (dharma), develop their compassionate nursing care through academic service to society, and leadership in organizations in the national level and international levels. Our mission is to produce health care providers in nursing both in the undergraduate and graduate levels, locally and internationally, serve society both in academic and health care services, develop research in health and nursing, and strengthen their love for art and culture, including Thai wisdom. The curriculum of the Faculty of Nursing is accredited by the Thailand Nursing and Midwifery Council (TNMC) and the Office of the Higher Education Commission (OHEC) under the Ministry of Education following the quality standard framework as required by the Thailand Higher Education. The Bachelor of Nursing Science program is a 4-year fulltime course. In the first year, a strong basic science background in Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, Mathematics, and Foundation of Nursing and Nursing Process with basic subjects in Nursing are taught as necessary foundation subjects. Passing to the second and third years, students study and practice in nursing practicum in the field of fundamental of nursing, adult nursing, gerontological nursing, palliative nursing, pediatric nursing, obstetrics and gynecological nursing, psychiatric nursing, and nursing research and innovation to gain knowledge and skills regarding assessments and nursing intervention of any conditions. Conducting research and creating nursing innovation to improve the quality of care are taught and practiced during second and third years. Furthermore, in the fourth year, students have more clinical practice in community hospitals and other clinical settings in Thailand in the fields of nursing administration and community health nursing. Through these, they gain knowledge and clinical experiences in all aspects of healthcare before their graduation so as to provide the best quality care to patients as they prepare to be professional nurses. 12

In recent years, Thailand has taken several bold initiatives with a large number of its population brought under health protection coverage. Thailand has achieved universal coverage with relatively good levels of spending on health, but faces significant challenges due to rising costs and its commitment to bring under the umbrella of its health coverage migrant workers and the informal sector. Thailand is crucial to global health because of the extraordinary progress it has made in health and the prominent role it plays in global health. Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh Regional Director WHO South-East Asia Region The Thailand population are eligible for health services that are covered financially by the main schemes: Universal Coverage Scheme (UCS); Civil Servants Medical Benefits Scheme (CSMBS); and Social Health Insurance Scheme (SHI). Structurally, there is at least one Tambon (sub-district) Health Promotion Hospital (THPH), formerly known as “Health centres”, in each sub-district, which covers and average of approximately 5000 people. At the district level, there is typically at least one district hospital (30–120 beds) covering a population of around 50 000. At the provincial level, general hospitals cover a population of approximately 600,000, and some general hospitals have been upgraded to be regional referral hospitals. At the top level of the system, there are 11 medical school hospitals, five of them located in the capital city of Bangkok. Primary health care (PHC) in Thailand mostly encompasses government health care facilities at all levels. Simulation-based learning is fast becoming a trend in developing health professional’s knowledge, skills, and attitude while at the same time protecting patients from unnecessary risks (Lateef, 2010). As nursing students learning in a high fidelity simulation laboratory, one will have a hands on clinical practice with Sim-Man (the most up-todate mannequin simulator), which can simulate cardiac respiratory failures, and Sim-Mom, which can simulate normal/abnormal birthing processes. The mannequins include a “Harvey” simulator which simulates cardiopulmonary care needs. Students can simulate oxygen administration and suctioning, insert catheters, attached EKG machine or ventilator, and simulate the disease based on the nursing instructor’s created scenarios. The laboratory includes a control room where nursing instructors can monitor and observed the students. Cameras are positioned in the different areas to feed information from the simulation laboratory to the control room and to the classroom. The control videotaped the scenarios so the students can see it later and instructors and the other students can critique their performance. Guided by clinical psychology lecturers and students, one will be introduced to the different instruments which provide learning tests on motor skills training and perception. Some of these instruments date back during WWI which were used in the selection of qualified soldiers and assembly line workers for the making of arms. These instruments will provide you an experiment of one’s perception of thing, reaction time, memory, and eye/hand coordination. Anatomical dissection is a time honored part of medical education. Nevertheless, just as the use of human tissue for research has become controversial, the use of human cadavers for teaching purposes is surrounded by ethical uncertainties. In Thailand, which remained an independent kingdom throughout the colonial period, Western medicine was introduced in the middle of the 19th century, mainly by American missionaries. Use of anatomical dissection for teaching was introduced around 1900. However, unlike most countries, cadavers are acquired through unremunerated voluntary donation. There are two factors that have helped Thai people overcome their reservations. One, King Bhumibol, the late King Rama IX, has officially approved body donation—a strong incentive in Thai society. The second factor is that donors attain the highly regarded status of ajarn yai, great teacher. Teachers in Thailand are respected to an extent unfamiliar to Westerners. This respect is formalized in a ceremony called wai khru (honor the teacher), which takes place annually in Thai schools and universities. The custom of calling the donors great teacher can be traced back to the very first Thai body donor, a professor of literature who was inspired to donate his body in the 1930s by the idea of remaining a teacher after death. He is commemorated in the anatomical museum of Siriraj Hospital, Bangkok, where his skeleton is on display. The status of ajarn yai is mainly conferred by two ceremonies, which seem to be a powerful means to define the atmosphere and an ethical framework for dissection courses in Thailand: the dedication ceremony some days before the first course session and the cremation ceremony at the end of the course. These ceremonies are important events in faculty life and are attended by the highest officials and students from different years. During the course, the cadavers are always referred to as ajarn yai, never as sop (cadaver). Respect for these teachers is paramount. Sometimes cadavers are greeted with a wai, the Thai greeting bow. Some students bring them flowers and many intend to pray for their ajarn yai at the temple (at least “after the exams”). The name, age, and cause of death of the donor are usually indicated on each dissecting table. Conceptualizing the cadaver as a teacher avoids this problem as the cadaver is closer to a respected nonmedical person than to a medical object.

The Thailand Nursing and Midwifery Council (TNMC) is the regulator for nursing and midwifery professions in Thailand. The TNMC maintains a register of all nurses and midwives eligible to practise within Thailand. It sets and reviews standards for their education, training, conduct and performance. The Thailand Nursing and Midwifery Council has the authority to arrange for the registration, licensing, and suspension or revocation of a nursing and/or midwifery license. They also approve and accredit the nursing and midwifery curriculum of each nursing institution in Thailand. Thailand Nursing and Midwifery Council Thailand introduced its first population policy in 1970, and it is one of the most successful programmes in the Southeast Asia Region. The programme has moved beyond a focus on family planning to include other vital components of reproductive health. In 2006 and 2009, the National Statistical Office of Thailand in collaboration with the Reproductive Health Division of the Department of Health, conducted special surveys focused on various aspects of reproductive health of the population (Reproductive Health Survey, 2009). Thailand is also one of few countries in the Southeast Asia Region where the actual fertility is lower than the wanted fertility. The low fertility rates in Thailand can be directly attributed to the high rates of contraceptive usage by women in the reproductive age group. Almost all women in Thailand that use contraception are relying on a modern method. http://www.searo.who.int/entity/maternal_ reproductive_health/documents/tha-fp.pdf?ua=1 The Bureau of Reproductive Health 16

“Located in each sub-district, or tambon, these hospitals are the first stop in the national insurance referral system and provide basic allopathic and traditional care close to the home of each Thai citizen” (Oeftering, 2012). “Before Western studies of public health ever reached Thailand, citizens sought care and advice at local Buddhist temples and continued to do so as urban expansion created severe disparities in access among the population. This is attributed to the ability to communally seek solutions to the gentle temperament praised in the Buddhist religion. In general, a Thai will avoid confrontation—not from a fear of individual repercussion, but from a concern for overall harmony,.” (Oeftering, 2012). Health Promoting Hospitals Although health promotion activities are already included in hospitals' services. most hospitals in Thailand are primarily curative oriented. Hospitals are the center of medical treatment and allocation of various types of resources where functioning basically passive curative services. With these strengths, the Ministry of Public Health has reconsidered and shifted the hospital's services to a more integrated proactive approach of health promotion and prevention to a so-called Health Promoting Hospitals (Auamkul, Kanshana, Phirangapaura, 2003). Health Promoting Hospital not only offer high quality comprehensive curative services but also integrates and implements health promotion through changes on the organizational development of social structures and organizational culture of the hospital. HPH initiates and supports active participation of patients and staff, builds supportive hospital environment, and link the community to the health system (Auamkul, Kanshana, Phirangapaura, 2003). The Health Promoting Hospital Master Plan for Thailand has been officially developed in 1998. The main objectives are to reorient and adapt the hospital services to a more balanced systematic, standard and integrated preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative approach which encourage favorable people's attitude and values so as to enable and empower hospital staff and people's ability to control over their health in a supportive physical, social and spiritual environment (Auamkul, Kanshana, Phirangapaura, 2003). In 2017, the Ministry of Public Health has said that they have developed 9,826 health centers nationwide to later become sub-district health pomotion hospitals. Their focus will be geared on promoting prevention rather than treatment to create a society that understands the importance of healthiness (NNBT, 2017). https://berkleycenter.georgetown.edu/posts/ buddhism-s-influence-on-health-care-in-thailand http://unpan1.un.org/intradoc/groups/public/ documents/apcity/unpan009705.pdf https://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/1001931- moph-continues-to-develop-five-star-subdistricthealth-promotion-hospitals-nationwide-by-5-years/ Three pictures show Indonesian exchange students participating in health promotion activities (dengue awareness, weekly monitoring of elderly patients, and baby care) in Samut Sakhon Health Promoting Hospital (public health center) in community 17

Sheen, while visiting the Redemptorist community in Bangkok. It is the Universal Catholic Church in reality coming together to worship and be nourished spiritually by word and sacrament. Mass goers are visitors who come from all five continents of the globe speaking a variety of languages, the very wealthy and beggarly poor. Ambassadors kneel beside shopkeepers, and beggars sit next to American tourists. Saint Louis Church In the midst of the busy Sathorn road is a quite place where one find rest and pray. Saint Louis Church was originally established in November 1, 1946 for Catholics of Chinese and foreign origin living in the Sathorn district by Msgr. Perros. 20

The Historic City of Ayutthaya, founded in 1350, was the second capital of the Siamese Kingdom. It flourished from the 14th to the 18th centuries, during which time it grew to be one of the world’s largest and most cosmopolitan urban areas and a center of global diplomacy and commerce. The city was attacked and razed by the Burmese army in 1767 who burned the city to the ground and forced the inhabitants to abandon the city. The city was never rebuilt in the same location and remains known today as an extensive archaeological site. The spirit of “Thainess” is the blend of traditions and beliefs. Everything is interconnected. For example, Thai boxing incorporates: the Thai way of life in the Wai Khru dance as a way of paying respect to the trainer; Thai fun in the enjoyment of the crowd; Thai wisdom in the techniques and training handed down over centuries; and Thai wellness in the many techniques used to treat wounds or bruises. The everyday life of the Thai people can boast a similar mix of culture and traditions that epitomises “Thainess” and makes the country stand out as offering unique experiences to all visitors who visit Thailand. http://www.thetraveljunkie.org/the-7-unique-aspects-of-thainess/ At present, it is located in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province. The total area of the World Heritage property is 289 ha. Once an important center of global diplomacy and commerce, Ayutthaya is now an archaeological ruin, characterized by the remains of tall prang (reliquary towers) and Buddhist monasteries of monumental proportions, which give an idea of the city’s past size and the splendor of its architecture. https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/576 Learn about Thailand’s incredible history with a visit to the Thai Human Imagery Museum. It is our custom that children or persons of a lower status are supposed to “wai” their seniors first, and laypersons are obliged to “wai” monks. If you are the person initiating the “wai” you should lift both hands, palms facing each other, and the tip of the index finger touching the tip of your nose....or you might bow your head a bit more until your forehead can touch with your finger tips. If you are the person receiving the “wai”, you merely lift your hands with the same gesture in response but you need not lift your hands as high as the person who initiates the “wai” gesture. Do's and Don'ts. 1. When someone pays you respect by a 'wai', you should respond with a 'wai'. 2. Bend down a bit when walking past a person senior to you. 3.
