HONEY BADGER

HERALD

Domuschola International School Newsletter

Message from the

Head of School

Jourdan Shanley C. Gan

Dear Domuschola community,

Last year, we had to cancel Foundation Day along with other school events due to the
pandemic. This year, we knew we had to make it happen and make it a memorable and
enjoyable event for everyone, even if we are not face to face. Thank you to everyone for
your participation and we hope that you all had a great time!

We also would like to thank our secondary school parents for attending the parent
teacher conference for secondary school on Friday, March 19. We aim to continue
building a positive and mutually beneficial relationship between parents and teachers to
help our students grow and develop into lifelong learners.

Next week, we look forward to our IB evaluation for both the Primary Years Programme
(PYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP) from March 24 to 26 before we go on Holy Week
break. This is a process that each IB school has to go through every 4 to 5 years. An IB
visiting team will "visit" our school online during these 3 days interviewing various
members of the community to gather information about our IB Primary Years
Programme and IB Diploma Programme.

Lastly, there has been an alarming increase of COVID-19 cases over the past few weeks.
Hospitals are once again at full capacity. I would like to remind everyone to always take
care of yourselves. Wear a mask, wash your hands regularly, and avoid going out if you
can. Let us all remember to take care of our own health and safety.

Thank you and have a restful weekend!

PRIMARY DEPARTMENT 2

NOTABLES IN HISTORY

For our fourth unit, the Grade 4 students learned about the different notables
in history under the transdisciplinary theme, Who We Are in Place and Time.

This is a major inquiry learning project in our curriculum because we believe
that there are many individuals who have made great impacts in our world

today that are worthwhile learning about.

This individual project aims to give inspiration to students to become agents of

change in the society despite the struggles and challenges. In addition, it
focuses on enhancing the students’ research, communication, and self-
management skills. Most importantly, this unit aims to showcase students’

understanding and talents through educational, meaningful, and memorable
presentation.

The inquiry will end with a culminating activity called the Day of the Notables
which is one of the most awaited events as a Fourth Grader. In this event,

students will portray their chosen notable and share to the school community
their life story including the early life experiences, struggles, achievements,
and their great contributions to the world.

PREPARATION FOR THE DAY OF THE NOTABLES

The history of the place that we are living in magnifies the impact of the past to
the present time. This unit started by introducing the students to the notables

and exposing them to various articles, biographies, books, and documentaries.

The students appreciated life today when they conducted research and
gathered information about some well-known figures and their achievements. It
enabled the students to develop a positive attitude toward the said event.

PRIMARY DEPARTMENT 3

Last March 3, resource speakers were invited to talk about their own
experiences about the Night of the Notables. They are from the batch who
presented in the very first Night of the Notables in Domuschola. They talked

about the challenges they faced in their own inquiry journey and of course the
fulfillment they felt after the successful event!

They ended the talk with insightful pieces of advice and words of
encouragement that motivated the fourth grade students.

The students selected their notables based on their field of interests and to
whom they feel most related to. Here are some of their reflections before they

begin their individual inquiry about their chosen historical figure.

PRIMARY DEPARTMENT 4

For the past few weeks, the students have been preparing for the first ever Virtual

Day of the Notables. This much awaited event will be on March 25 and 26, 2021
from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Join us and witness our students share the highlights and
fascinating life stories of many notable people throughout history!

Kindly send us an email at [email protected] if you

like to attend the event so we can provide you the Zoom details.

EXPLORING MUSIC TECHNOLOGY

Digital technology played a vital role in many aspects of learning especially

during this time that students need to maximize everything for their learning.
Thanks to technology that even if students are apart from each other they were
able to do and share their music.

The Grade 9 students learned about VoiceOver and how this was being widely

used for television production and for students to enhance their audio, they
also have to learn how to use the software called ‘’Audacity’’ and do basic
amplification for their recorded audios. They were able to apply the concept of

change by exploring different tones and pitches of their voices as well as a
variety of ‘’effects’’ in the audio amplification. Each of the students
demonstrated their voice-over lines and shared their amplification with the

class.

Overall, the students enjoyed it even if it was a bit challenging for the first time

but as they continue to practice the software they were able to conquer it and
they have fun.

The above photo shows the Grade 9 students learning basic audio amplification
using Audacity.

STUDENT LIFE 6

“Believe that what you do matters and will make a difference in people’s lives.

You don’t have to save the world in one stroke, but you can make a difference,
one person at a time.”

“Inclusive, good quality education is a foundation for dynamic and equitable
societies.”

Despite the challenges and restrictions created by the pandemic, students in
the Secondary School continue to invest their time and effort in making a

difference in the lives of others.

From individual initiatives in Term 1, students have moved to an entire student

body initiative, supporting the United Nations Sustainable Goals # 4: Quality
Education and #10 Reduced Inequalities (focusing on inequality in access to

good education). Due to restrictions in mobility and to ensure the safety of
students, these 2 UNSD Goals are thought of to be the most viable at this time.

Students designed and rendered individual campaign posters and were
scheduled mentorship sessions in the initial phase. Ongoing individual
consultation sessions help students realize the objectives set forth. Posters

were sent to identified recipients, who might be able to donate books and
similar resources, that will later help build libraries in areas where students
have no access to these educational resources.

In our previous articles, we mentioned that the Secondary School Service

Learning Program sought partnership with NGOs, for sustainable initiatives
that students can carry out, despite the restrictions and challenges of the
pandemic. For Term 2, the students are supporting The Library Hub Philippines

and with the help of donors from the community of students, parents, faculty
and staff, including friends of our school community, we are positive that the
project will be able to get donations of a good number of books and educational

resources.

“We can’t fix all the world’s problems, but we will do what we can to make a

difference, where we can.”

STUDENT LIFE 7

Seen in photo #1 is Alia Montinola, Grade 10, taken during a consultation
meeting to discuss and get feedback on the draft of her campaign poster (Photo
# 2). She spoke to her mother about it and was happy to get her enthusistic

support. A few days after the consultation meeting, Alia was able to collect a
good number of books that will be a great addition to the collection going to

recipient schools of the Library Hub Philippines.

“All students deserve to have equal access to quality education.”

If you wish to donate books and educational materials for this project to
support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals # 4: Quality
Education and #10: Reduced Inequalities (particularly inequality in access to

good education), please contact any of our students that you know from Grade
6 to Grade 10.

We invite you to also please visit ChaREADty on Instagram
@childrens.chareadty. Tiago Santos and Addie Yao (both Grace 7) would be
very happy to respond to your questions or receive your generous donation of

books and other educational resources for our partner organization, The
Library Hub Philippines.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR KINDNESS AND GENEROSITY!

LAUNCHING OF THE NEW

HONEY BADGERS LOGO

Designed and Written by

Jennie Raymond
PSA Upper Primary Representative

I was honored when Mrs. Bambi Fernandez de Castro, DIS Head of
Administration, reached out to me to design the new Honey Badgers logo. As a
Visual/Graphic Artist, this task was something that I was excited about. We

joined the Domuschola family almost four years ago and now, my son is already
in his 4th Grade. As a mom of a Domuscholan and a PSA officer for 2 years now,
designing this logo was really something special.

The meaning behind any logo is as important as the design itself. To exude

fierceness, confidence and courage were the characteristics given to me and
what I intended to exhibit in the new design of Honey Badgers’ logo.

The red headband symbolizes athleticism and strength of loyalty.

PARENT SUPPORT ASSOCIATION 9

The three background claws with different colors signify the claws of the honey
badger, its physical strength, great balance between mind and body and

diversity.

The round shield or “Targe” encapsulates agility, power and energy.

Lastly, the colors used (Maroon, Yellow Ochre, Black and White) stand for

Domuschola International School.

We, in Domuschola, believe in the fierceness, confidence and courage of our

children. I am confident that this new honey badgers logo doesn’t only
represent each and every student in Domuschola International School, but also
hopeful that it serves as an inspiration in facing their future challenges. May

our children learn to celebrate the wins by appreciating the journey in winning.
May they learn from the stumbles and losses by getting up with their heads

held high and giving it another shot. Most importantly, may they continue to
work together as a team, as one big Domuschola family. Some of us may be
Tarsiers, some are Cobras, and some are Eagles, but ALL of us are HONEY

BADGERS in our hearts and minds.

To all the Domuschola students, we believe in you, your fierceness, your
confidence, and your courage.

Let’s go, Honey Badgers!!!
