The 44 year old, mom, teacher, coach , “woman of strength” with a lot of love, passion and time for her elders, her community and herself has a dream to fulfil. Charlene epitomises the quote “ being the change we wish to see in this world” and through her life she aims to do just that – change the lives for the better of our communities. Her resolute nature and her passion to serve, especially rural communities, can be seen in every project and the success of several campaigns to empower women and girls in society and bring hope to our kids -to our youth- in times we see so much despair, She is the Headmaster of Learningtree Aftercare and Creche in Simondium for 6years. The Aftercare and Creche are open for the community. At Learningtree they focus on kids growth, improving their skills, selfconfidence, entrepreneurship (where they started their own veggie garden) as well as academics and she also realised that sport is a valuable tool to teach social skills. Her projects and the campaigns she was privileged to either launch herself or to be part of include the Anti-bullying Campaign (2019), where she worked with Mr.Wrestling and visited several schools as well as people with disabilities. Charlene implemented a “I wish my teacher knew” box, where kids can wrote a letter, anonymously , to ask how to handle certain situation when they were bullied. Her second, BIG project near to her heart is “Live of the Giving” Charity Shop. She and her friend started this project in July 2022, to help girls and boys who can’t afford to attend school dances, matric farewells or any other functions. The Shops Name was chosen together with a great meaning, “Ons moet almal leef waar ons meer gee, in plaas van ontvang.” which if loosely understand is based on the principles of the spirit of Ubuntu which means – I am because you are meaning that a person can only growband progress through the growth and progression of others knowing that if we can influence and change the live of one person for the better we will inspire others to want to be part of a better and brighter South Africa. They started with a small amount of dresses, where the community started to share donations to help the kids, from clothes to vouchers. Yet they have not disappoint , they have helped 21 girls by now. In 2019 Charlene’s husband passed away. After that , she were never herself again. She started giving up on her life, didn’t really look after herself. In February 2022 she has read about this a 8 week Bokradio Ladies Lifestyle challenge on social media. She realised how important it was and how healthy it is to have a healthy life. Charlene started with the challenge for 8 weeks , going strong. She actually won because she has lost the most kg’s and cm’s. That was where Charlene realised how good it feels to feel so free. She started to help other ladies with their lifestyle too. That was where the roots of Titans Fit Me started. Titans Fit Me is an affordable “gym” where ladies can be themselves and work hard to have a healthy lifestyle and achieve their goals. Charlene is a Motivational speaker and loves giving back to her community. “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” – Lao Tzu 3

IWOY www.iwoy.org women’s online health clinic that alleviates period poverty and reduces teenage pregnancies which has been named 2023 BBC’s Top 100 Tech entrepreneur businesses.” What has been your biggest business challenge and how did you overcome it? “Being a female CEO in South Africa is extremely difficult. Disrupting the social norm, juggling three provinces, waking up without my daughter, healing from the loss of my sister due to covid19, losing six-figure paying clients and being dumped, all contributed to my growth. I discovered that when I open up about the losing side of the business, my struggles, and my beliefs, I not only give others permission to do the same, but I also connect with more people and attract clients who love me for who I am.” “Challenges exist to strengthen us. Each challenge has given me the opportunity to grow in the right direction, and the networking has been amazing. For example, Xero, a New Zealand-based public technology company listed on the Australian stock exchange, extended a VIP invitation to our team to the first senior Rugby World Cup 7’s held in Cape Town since 1995, where the top women’s and men’s teams from around the world competed for the title of world champions.” What do you think women and young girls in South Africa should be taught? “Despite making up 51% of the world’s population, statistics on women business owners are inconsistent. A startling 46,4% of business owners in Ghana, which far outpaces the other nations with the largest percentage, are women, compared to only 18,8% in South Africa.” “We must prepare them to lead at the forefront of innovation. We must teach them about their mission. They must plan, prepare and expect to win” “I have also co-funded Queens Leadership Academy; a signature community for women and young girls that provides a variety of online edutech and FREE femtech services, in addition to on-site services designed to assist families financially, physically, emotionally, and intellectually. Our platform serves both B2C and B2B customers.” Please visit our website. At the age of nine, when other children were playing with dolls and toys, Awonke Dyantyi and Andisiwe Dyantyi (now deceased due to covid 19) set up shop in their parents’ spare bedroom, using groceries and cutlery as inventory and coke pull tabs as coins; this is when she realized she wanted to be an entrepreneur. Dyantyi, who now serves as the CEO and global head of Dyantyi Chartered Business Accountants, has been a driving force behind some of the most revolutionary changes in the SME industry over the last 7 years. Awonke Dyantyi has been named as part of 2021 Top 50 women in accounting global awards, presented by the professional services platform Ignition in Australia. Out of 1000 nominations worldwide, she was the solo South African woman to win. “Surprisingly, I found myself in the right circumstances, where I was matched with lovely people and was able to join forces with a tribe that can impact strategy implementation and automation in South Africa. I was a participant in the establishment of a digital financial management firm that seeks to not only transform traditional accounting and marketing into digitized approaches that are friendly to startup resources and budgets, but also seeks to establish an inclusive & socially responsible society within which we inform and empower women whilst also strengthening successful brand companies through structural & transformational leadership and community change.” We caught up with Awonke Dyantyi at the Top 100 Influential women of the Year & Artes awards at the Baxter Theatre, Cape Town where she was awarded the Top Influential women of the year trophy to thunderous applause and a standing ovation. What has been your biggest success as a Fempreneur? “To begin with, bag a global accounting award during a pandemic as a single mom living in Cape Town. We are now recognized as the Middle East & Africa region’s most meaningful women-led business. My family, my team, and my country are all incredibly proud of what I’ve accomplished. I’d like to dedicate this amazing victory to my daughter, who inspired me to launch my purpose driven start-up.” “In addition to being attended by Tsakane Maluleke, Auditor General of South Africa and team LIVE at the Finance Indaba in October 2022 as a woman in accounting who is raising our flag high was an absolute honor.” “Lastly, being appointed as a board member of Femconnect; a South African Awonke Dyantyi “Dream big and dare to fail.” – Norman Vaughan 20

IWOY www.iwoy.org Nolethu Ndude is the co-founder of We Mattah, an NPO with a focus on but not limited to Sexual & Reproductive Health Education. Her journey started when she was at school researching for a Biology project which sparked her interest in this space and lead to her activism journey. When the opportunity came for her to work for one of the largest pro-choice clinics in the country engaging the youth, It was only fitting for her to accept. That being said through her work and youth engagement she learnt that the lack of basic sexual education was lacking in the areas she worked in, which lead to a lot of misconceptions about sex and the importance of contraceptives. This sparked the birth of We Matter a sexual reproductive health education focused NO working with schools, communities and government organizations to bridge the gap between education and accurate comprehensive SRH information. We Matter launched a pilot programme starting in the Western Cape. Where we are working with the Western Cape Department of Basic Education and the Western Cape Department of Health in getting into schools and communities. We have visited a few schools in the past months and engaged with over 3000 scholars. Through this, we have learnt that the youth is no different from that of 10 years ago only that they are more exposed to and pressured through social media and the reality tv lifestyle. Others are being forced to grow up fast due to circumstances at home where they have to take care of their siblings because their parent/ guardian is suffering from addiction or has passed away which in turn forces one into transactional relationships to put food on the table. IWOY www.iwoy.org Mariam Desai real women’s bodies. Hence she purchased a sewing machine and tried her hand at creating what she required instinctively for herself. As she attended various functions, more and more women stopped her and enquired where she purchased the garments she was wearing. This inspired her to think that perhaps she should dabble within the clothing industry and see if the requests to purchase were genuine or if it was pure admiration and words. Having had no formal training she designed instinctively from her heart and passion for the female physique and what she perceived would flow naturally on the body without feeling restricted, uncomfortable and without revealing. Women love food and eating yet want to look fantastic and feminine! I converted the positive from a negative: Post a meal, when one is full and satiated, that one could still feel fabulous yet comfortable with the clothing that they are wearing. Women also want to feel slim and high street fashion savvy without feeling too large. Her clothing is modest yet trendy, trying to cater for women of all ages, shapes and sizes. Research indicates that the modest fashionista does not belong solely to a religious sect, modesty has a global appeal. That is her fashion ideal and objective and she aligns her vision to that when designing the clothing. This is how Cherrie Couture was born from the seed to the burgeoning start up enterprise it is today with the full support of her husband, children and family who completely believe and stand by her with the daily structure she required to function as a small home industry to eventually having to not only employ staff but also to be able to create work for small CMT businesses with peak period trading. She has now become a mentor to other smmes and employs the sage advice of the pitfalls and lessons learnt and imparts that critical information to anyone who wishes to set sail on their journey towards success and growth. Cherrie Couture was conceptualized, designed and implemented by Mariam Desai. A housewife for almost 30 years who on the eve of her 49th birthday decided that she needed to embark upon her journey within the fashion environment. With her natural flair for garment styling and understanding the complexities of various female bodies shapes and forms she decided that she would try her hand at professionalizing her prior personal attempts at garment manufacturing. From previous years she had literally been creating, designing and sewing her own garments to various functions as well as on a day to day basis due to the current retail market having the right ideas about fashion but the fit of the clothing didn’t quite align to “If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.” – Martin Luther King Jr. 31
