Harvest and folklore festival
The Sarawak Harvest & Folklore Festival 2021
in conjunction with Gawai, is an ethnic festival
that is one of the highlight of the Gawai Dayak
celebrations.
Taking place at the Sarawak Cultural Village, the
event aims to give the Sarawak culture through its
highlights activities such as ethnic beauty pageant,
Sape world concert, the Ironman competition, and a
theme play based on the Iban legend.
Tracing the roots of
harvest festival
This grand celebration is an integral part of a majority of the
Dayak community in Sarawak comprising the Iban, Bidayuh and
Orang Ulu (including the Kayan, Kenyah, Kelabit, Murut and Lun
Bawang).
Generally celebrated to mark the end of harvesting, Hari
Gawai or Gawai Dayak has become a symbol of unity during
which open houses or “Ngabang Gawai” are held, bringing people
of different ethnicities and cultural backgrounds.

Umai
Umai is traditional dish of the
Melanau.
Naturally, seafood is an
essential part of their diet
which is why Umai is a
traditional delicacy of the
Melanau people.
Ka Chang Ma
Ka Chang Ma is a Chinese dish
integrated into traditional
Sarawakian cuisine along with the
migration of Chinese communities
to Sarawak during the Brooke era.
The employment opportunities at
coal and gold mines as well as the
newly discovered oil fields around
Miri and Bintulu in the north,
drove this migration.
Ayam Pansuh
(chicken cooked in bamboo) is a
traditional delicacy of the Dayaks.
The Dayak community consists of
the Iban, Bidayuh and Orang Ulu
(people of the river). This dish
used to only be served during
festivals, but today it is a common
year-round option in many
restaurants in the state.

DAYAK KENYAH
•Dayak kenyah can be dance
dance of Sarawak can be danced alone or in
groups. It is a joint dance Dayak Kenyah tribe
living in Bulungan, Kutai, Berau and Pasir of
the boundary areas between Sarawak and
East Kalimantan.

Enggang or hornbills dance this dance

women it is believed that the ancient
kenyah prine'nyik selng' create this
dance to symboliest happiness and
graduate to the gods for the birth of
his grandchildren.

Games
Batak Lampong is a traditional sport of the Iban in Sarawak.Batak means pull in the Iban
language while Lampong refers to a light and medium length piece of woodIt is a traditional
sport where two persons sit flat on the ground to compete by pulling on the wood. This
traditional sport was in the past held at the “pemetong” of the door (door divider) if it was held
in a house. Traditionally in the longhouse, the loser has to drink tuak. The purpose of this
sport is to test the strength of players and to strengthen community relations in the
longhouse. This sport is usually held during the Gawai Festival
Sumpit is a blowpipe used by the indigenous ethnic groups in Sarawak in the past to hunt for
animals in the jungle. The sumpit and the darts are made from different materials such as
wood and bamboo as well as fiber glass. Sumpit has become one of the traditional games for
competition in Sarawak and is enjoyed by people from all walks of life.
Bowling kelapa is a modified version of the real bowling game, using a coconut as the ball
and plastic bottles as pinsraditionally in Sarawak, this game has been played by those
who have no access to the real bowl and pins as it cost a penny to enter those
establishments.Compared to the real bowling ball, the coconut poses a challenge when it
rolls as it is not totally round. Join this game and be challenged by the coconut!
