Antimicrobial-resistant genes affect birth outcomes AMR

Researchers studied the rectal microbiota of 2,931 neonates (up to 60 days of life) with
clinical signs of sepsis and of 15,217 mothers screening for antimicrobial resistant genes
(ARGs). The identified carbapenemase-positive bacteria showed a high diversity of
bacterial species (57 distinct species/genera), exhibiting resistance to most antibiotics
tested. Genomic analysis of the most commonly found isolates revealed close relation-
ships between isolates from different samples, indicating possible bacteria transmission
between neonates, and neonates and mothers. The presence of ARGs was a predictor of

“Biologics are glimpses of hope INTERVIEW

Prof. Dr. Md. Qamrul Hassan Jaigirdar What types of Skin diseases are prevalent in Bangladesh?
Professor & Chairman
Department of Dermatology & The common skin diseases in Bangladesh are: Scabies,

vitiligo, acne vulgaris, alopecia, melasma, etc.
Dermatology is a

in chronic diseases
like vitiligo, psoriasis, Yes, contagious skin diseases like fungal & parasitic infec-
Lichen planus. tions are more common in this weather because in hot
weather there is excessive sweating which that acts as a
predisposing factor for such infections. Moreover, as most
of the people of our country live in overcrowded house-
holds, contagious skin infections are widespread. Nurser-
ies, hostels, different sports activities that involve close
contact, and touching objects that house Scabies and
fungal organisms, wet, damp garments/undergarments,
lack of personal hygiene awareness, etc. contribute to the
spreading of fungal & parasitic diseases like Scabies to
transmit rapidly.

To prevent the transmission of these infections some
measures must be taken.

Patients should avoid sharing garments, linen and tow-
els including shower room napkins. All the garments, un-
dergarments, and socks must be thoroughly washed daily
in hot water, sun-dried or iron pressed on the reverse side.
Simultaneous treatment of family members of the affected
person is crucial, particularly for scabies. Also, all close con-
tact of infected persons and intimate contact with partners
should be avoided during active infection. Patients need
to be advised to keep the skin, especially body folds, and
finger and toe web spaces dry. Regular bathing, at least 2
times throughout the day is advised for those who perspire
profusely. Nails should be trimmed to avoid the spread of
infection. Shared surfaces such as gym equipment & mats
should be regularly disinfected. Sandals or flip-flops in the
locker room need to be worn instead of walking barefoot-
ed. Tight clothing and shoes should be avoided.

Regarding fungal infection, the patient should be coun-
seled regarding the nature of the disease. The patient
should be warned against using steroid cream. It will
worsen the severity. Infected person should avoid close
contact with other family members. The patient should
not stop antifungal medication without consultation with
a dermatologist.
