1. She might have a happy and more peaceful life. She would be loved by her family.
2. Adeline’s life would be better than now. She wouldn’t be abused if Niang didn’t start abusing

her.
3. Yes, because when they were allowed to do anything at their old house, but at their new home

they had many laws.
4. Niang takes favorites on her kids. The ones she doesn’t like she sends them away.

monks. Niang’s children get favored over them and get beautiful modern clothes. They are also

15. First, her mother died giving birth to her, so her family thought she was bad luck. Then, her
father married Niang, who was a mean and despised stepmother. Nai Nai died, which caused
Niang to become the head of the family. Niang changed many of the rules and showed heavy
favoritism for her own children. Every day at home, Adeline was beat and ridiculed. Then,
Adeline was sent away by her family and abandoned at Tian Jin, where the communists were
coming. Niang never included her in anything.
16. They don’t know exactly how Nai Nai died but we think it was because of stress and keeping up
with all the conflicts in the family. Niang marrying father and ye ye losing power were probably
too much for Nai Nai to handle. Also, her small, hurting feet caused her unnecessary pain.
17. PLT gave her happiness and something to focus on which helped her relieve her stress. It also
gave her another friend that never judged her or made fun of her.
18. I would lock myself in my room and run away since you know that your family’s just going to
treat you like trash anyway. There’s no difference.
19. First, it was, but if we didn’t know that, she would be caught and taken to custody and tortured,
questioned with torture, or killed.

20. Adeline would live in a happy, caring family and get what she wanted. Chinese Cinderella never
would have been written since she wouldn’t have such a sad childhood to write about. Niang
wouldn’t be an evil stepmother but actually like a second mother.

21. Her family doesn’t like her or care about her since they sent her to Communist grounds. They
threw her away like a piece of trash and sent her straight to the soldiers.

22. Adeline’s life would have more love because Niang would not be head of the family. She would
not be abused and sent away. Nai Nai would be head of family and ye ye would still have
money. Even if Niang hated Adeline, Ye ye and Nai Nai would take care of her.

23. Adeline is Chinese Cinderella. PLT was Adeline’s pet referred to question 17.
24. For a start, Niang mistreated and yelled at Adeline every chance she got. It became so bad that

Adeline was scared to go home or arrive 1 minute late. Also, Niang’s own children were favored
over the others, which caused Adeline to have almost no personal possessions. The only person
she could really trust was Aunt Baba.
25. I would adapt Niang into a friendlier more caring mom to change the story and the character.
She would be friendlier to make Adeline’s life happier and better.
26. There were many facts that showed her family disliked her. They sent her to Communist
grounds, made fun of her at every achievement, and forgot her name. They also thought she
was bad luck since her mother died giving birth to her. This showed that she was lower than the
lowest human being in her house.
27. Adeline’s parents wanted to rid their hands of her as soon as possible, so they just sent her away
to the first place she saw. They probably didn’t even know that the Communists were taking
over, so they just plopped her in Tianjin.
28. She would be miserable but stay with her family and live in Shanghai. She never would have met
Niang’s sister or come this close to meeting the Communists.
29. Aunt Baba was a caretaker that was Adeline’s second mom. She was the only one that ever took
notice of Adeline and congratulated her when no one else would. She loved Adeline and did
everything she could to save Adeline from harm. She is like Niang’s opposite.
30. Adeline’s family is unfair because Niang’s children are favored over everyone else. They are
spoiled brats while Adeline is treated like trash. They hate her because she caused her mother
to die when she was born. They thought she was bad luck, which caused her to be treated badly.
