INTRODUCTION

Anwar Ibrahim, also known as Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim or Anwar bin
Ibrahim, is a well-known Malaysian politician. Anwar Ibrahim grew up in a
moderately rich home and learned about management from his parents, both of whom
were interested in politics. As his country moved from imperial to full sovereignty,
he became part of a growing undercurrent of patriotic and ethnic pride. Other than
that, using his self-assurance and leadership abilities, he rose to the position of student
leader, becoming well-known for his religious and cultural interests. Anwar Ibrahim
subsequently became a member of a strong political party, quickly rising through the
ranks.

Moreover, he was supposedly seen as the heir to the long-time reigning
strongman after serving in a variety of ministerial positions. However, when a
financial crisis prompted a schism in opinion, Anwar Ibrahim was deposed and
imprisoned. Furthermore, using sodomy laws, his political opponents utilized
exceedingly flimsy probable cause to keep him jailed. After a judge overturned the
accusations, Anwar Ibrahim was once again caught up in a sting involving his
sexuality, which would be a source of considerable prejudice and contempt in his own
country. Although Anwar Ibrahim is generally admired in the West, notably for his
pro-market economic ideas, his own country's ruling powers are unwavering in their
determination to crush him politically by any means necessary.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was born on April 20, 1947, in Cherok Tok Kun,
Bukit Mertajam, Malayan Union's Penang district. Ibrahim Abdul Rahman was his
father, and he employed as a porter in a hospital. Che Yan, his mother, was a full-
time mother. His family eventually became politicians, with his father resigning as a
cabinet member. Other than that, Anwar attended Sekolah Melayu Cherok To'Kun for
elementary school before transferring to Sekolah Rendah Stowell and finishing his
high school education at ‘Bukit Mertajam' in Penang. Besides that, Anwar Ibrahim
served as Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister from December 1, 1993 to September 2,
1998. This legislative leader's term has been marred by controversy, but his policy
factors aimed at achieving social equality have won worldwide acclaim.

Anwar Ibrahim is well-known for making candid statements regarding Israel,
stating how an Israeli marketing company used by the Malaysian government is

4

directly responsible for Palestinian fatalities. Moreover, Georgetown University
bestowed the Presidential Medal to Anwar Ibrahim in 1996. That same year, he was
awarded a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Georgetown University's School of
Foreign Service. Ibrahim enrolled in the 'University of Malaya' in Kuala Lumpur in
1968. He swiftly rose to the position of leadership, and was chosen president of the
'National Union of Malaysian Muslim Students'. He rapidly became renowned for his
zealous pro-Islamic sentiments.

The youthful leader soon took on more responsibilities, being chosen president
of the University of Malaya's "Malay Language Society." The following year, he had
become a co-founder of the ‘Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia,' as well as the
chairman of the ‘Malaysian Youth Council.' He was detained in 1974 for taking part
in a peaceful demonstration against rural poverty. He was imprisoned for over two
years without a trial due to his country's severe security regulations. Besides that, he
was selected to represent the entire Asia Pacific region at the 'World Assembly of
Muslim Youth' from 1975 to 1982.

Moreover, Mahathir bin Mohamed rose to lead the ‘United Malays National
Organization' in 1991. (UMNO). He was elected Prime Minister following general
elections. Despite being the president of several groups, Anwar startled many fans
when he joined the UMNO in 1982. Almost quickly, he was appointed to a number
of cabinet positions. He was elected President of the UNESCO General Conference in
1989 as a result of his tenure as Minister of Education. In 1991, he was named
Minister of Finance. His socialist policies and economic concepts were implemented
at the same time as the country's wealth increased. Furthermore, Ibrahim was
appointed Chairman of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund's
Development Committee in 1998. (IMF).

He was convicted of sodomy and sentenced to six years in jail in April 1999.
Following the whims of Malaysian law, this politician was sentenced to nine years in
prison two months later. His sentence was widely panned around the world as an
obvious form of government persecution. Later that year, Anwar filed a civil suit for
slander against Prime Minister Mahathir. On March 14, 2014, an appeals court
overturned the vacation and upheld his sentence. Other than that, the verdict was
widely condemned around the world as being clearly political in nature.

CHAPTER 1
EARLY LIFE AND FAMILY

6

Anwar was born in the Penang town of Cherok Tok Kun. His father,
Ibrahim Abdul Rahman, began his career as a hospital porter before entering

grassroots level. He was a 'protege' of Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad
throughout his early political career, but eventually emerged as an outspoken
critic of Tun Dr. Mahathir. Moreover, he was sentenced to six years in prison in
1999 after being found guilty of abuse of power.

Anwar is Arabic for 'shining.' Datuk Haji Ibrahim bin Abdul Rahman, his
father, is a former Member of Parliament and Parliamentary Secretary of
Malaysia's Ministry of Health. Meanwhile, Che Yan Hussein, her mother, is a
member of the UMNO Women's Movement. He was frequently taken to
women's speeches as a child. In 1978, he married Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah
Datuk Ismail, a student at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland,
who eventually worked at the University Hospital in Petaling Jaya's eye clinic.
His marriage to Datin Seri Azizah resulted in six beautiful children. Nurul Izzah,
his eldest daughter, is currently the Member of Parliament for Lembah Pantai
in Kuala Lumpur.

7

He went to Stowell National School in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, as a
child. From 1960 to 1966, he pursued his secondary school at the Malay
College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK). During his time at MCKK, he was involved in
the Malay Association and the Vice Orator School. He was also designated
as the MCKK's Chief Invigilator. While at MCKK, Anwar knew Sanusi Junid,
Kamaruddin Jaafar and Yahaya Ahmad. Subsequently in 1967, he continued
his higher education at the University of Malaya in Malay Studies (Arts).

Datuk Seri Anwar has been a well-liked figure from his adolescence. He
is most known as one of the founders of the non-governmental organization.
Angkatan Belia Islam Belia Malaysia, which stands for the National Association
of Malaysian Muslim Students. He was imprisoned for three years (1974-1976)
under the Internal Security Act, ISA, for participating in a street rally at the
University of Malaya against the devastating poverty in Baling, Kedah. The
residents of Baling's interior were left to "rot" because they were thought to be
communist hideouts. Anwar used to be on the PAS stage, criticizing Tunku
Abdul Rahman on the Internal Security Act, the Societies Act, poverty, and
other issues.

POLITICAL CAREER

Anwar Ibrahim enrolled in Kuala Lumpur‟s “University of Malaya” in
1968. He soon rose to the position of leadership and was chosen president of
the „National Union of Malaysian Muslim Students‟. He immediately gained a
reputation for his zealous pro-Islamic beliefs. After that, the young leader took
on even more responsibilities when he was chosen president of the University
of Malaya‟s Malay Language Society. The following year, he co-founded the
‟Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia‟ and was elected president of the
„Malaysia Youth Council. He was detained in 1974 for taking apart in a
demonstration against rural poverty. He spent nearly 2 years in prison without
a trial due to his country‟s harsh security regulations. He was elected President
of the UNESCO General Conference in 1989, based on his work as Minister of
Education. In 1991, Anwar Ibrahim was named Minister of Finance. His market
reforms and economic ideas were timed to coincide with a surge in national
wealth.

In 1993, he won a party vote to become Malaysia‟s Deputy President.
Despite numerous corruption charges, he was viewed as being groomed to
take over as Prime Minister. Anwar Ibrahim was apprehended on September
20, 1998. He was charged with corruption for allegedly attempting to obstruct
an on-going police investigation. He was personally beaten by the Inspector
General of Police while incarcerated. He was convicted of sodomy and
sentenced to six years in jail in April 1999. His conviction was widely panned
across the world as an obvious example of political persecution. Anwar
Ibrahim initiated a legal suit for slander against Prime Minister Mahathir later
that year. An appeals court overturned the vacation on March 14, 2014, and

14

his sentence was restored. The judgment was widely condemned across the
world because it was seen as plainly political. This famous leader continues to

Datuk Seri Anwar Bin Dato 'Ibrahim is a former Malay College Kuala
Kangsar MCKK student with a Bachelor of Arts in Malay Studies (BA) from the
University of Malaya UM. He has been appointed Malaysia's Minister of
Education. When Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim became Minister of Education, he
overhauled the education system that had been left behind by the
colonialists. He brought with him a national education philosophy. Dr. Maszlee
Malik, who now holds the same position, is one of the persons who benefited
from Anwar's system.
Apart from Dr Maszlee, Dr MAZA, Dr Zahazan, Ustaz Hasrizal, Ust Erfino,
and many other Jordanian and Moroccan graduates, the Ministry of
Education's policy (in the 1990s) sent outstanding SPM students to the Middle
East to study religion and Arabic through KP (Ministry of Education) and JPA
scholarships. As a result, Middle Eastern graduates at the time were able to
revitalise the image of'religious people' in Malaysia. The outcome also
disproved the common perception of the ustaz/ah, which was once
associated with stagnation and backwardness.

CONCLUSION
Dato Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim now is a Malaysian politician who has
served as the Leader of the Opposition. Known for both his tumultuous
political career and his dogged decades-long quest to lead Malaysia, Anwar
Ibrahim has become one of the most well-known and controversial figures in
South East Asia. However, he also plays the important roles in Malaysia
politics. Although, he had to struggle with so many hardships as politician, he
did not give up and continue to be one of those who spoke out for the sake
of Malaysia. Even, in universities, he was already a popular national figure
actively pursuing the reform agenda as he formed the Muslim Youth
Movement of Malaysia (ABIM) in 1971. The objection of the ABIM is to
promote and uphold the principles of moderate Islam and to campaign for
moral uplifting and social justice. We can see that Anwar Ibrahim has indeed
a very high leadership spirit since he was still young. Anwar Ibrahim is a very
influential man. He also knew to have numerous connections with various
politicians in different countries. He too, took part in a lot of uprising political
activities. His unwavering spirit in providing the best progress for Malaysia
should be praised and emulated by the people.
