LIFE AS SHE KNEW IT… HUMBLE, SOCIAL, AND HER WAY! Mary Ann Coulter was born in Washington, DC on March 1, 1935. The only child to Mary and James Powell. Even though she was an only child, Mary Ann was a favorite sister-cousin to a host of family members in the Jenkins/Clarke clan. A family line deeply rooted in the Washington, DC area. Mary graduated from Cardoza High School. Settling down in the District, Mary met and married James Pounds. From that union, they would have 2 sons. Ernest Edward Pounds and Gary Bernard Pounds. In 1966 while working at the Washington Hospital Center, Mary struck up a friendship with Johnny Ray Coulter Sr. This friendship would go on to become a 54-year love affair. From his super visor to his wife, Mary and John made their way to the 1200 Block of Kennedy St. NW to become the reigning Matriarch and Patriarch of her childhood home. In this union, Mary and John would have 3 children. Stacy Coulter (Boykin), Sanya Coulter and Johnny R. Coulter Jr. After mastering the role of mother and wife, Mary sought a renewed spiritual journey that led her to Emory Fellowship. At Emory, Mary formed a new relationship with God, The Wisdom Warriors, her many church daughters and sons and her “Basketball Pastor” (Joseph W. Daniels Jr.). You know he used to play basketball… (her description of him). Ms. Ann or Momma Ann could be spotted in the corridors of her beloved Kennedy Street neighborhood. From the corner of Georgia Ave. NW and Kennedy St NW hoping on the E bus to Ft. Totten to head to lunch and shopping at PG Mall. Or going the other way to Friendship Heights. She loved her neighbors and her neighborhood. Mary was preceded in death by her parents James and Mary Powell. Her husband Johnny Ray Coulter Sr. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her children, Ernest and Gary Pounds, Stacy Boykin, Sanya Coulter, Johnny, and Natasha (daughter-in law) Coulter. 7 grandchildren, Cornell Rogers, James Pegues, Isaiah Boykin, Gary and Dakia Chappell, Elijah and Jerimiah Coulter. 6 greatgrandchildren, Zyonna Gillespie, Cameron Cottom, King Pegues, Asaadi and Ah’Kili Boykin. Already! Your love, guidance, and presence in my life are truly irreplaceable. Losing you has left a void that cannot be filled, but I find comfort in the memories we shared and the love you showered upon me. I want you to know how much you meant to me and how grateful I am to have had you as my mother. You were not just a parent but also my confidante, my guiding light, and my source of strength. You taught me valuable lessons about life, compassion, and resilience. You were always there for me, even during my darkest hours, providing a safe harbor for my tears and fears. The memories we shared together are etched in my mind and heart forever. From the little everyday moments to the significant milestones, I cherish each and every one of them. Your wisdom and love have shaped me into the person I am today, and I promise to carry your legacy forward with pride and honor. While the pain of your departure is overwhelming, I find comfort in knowing that you are now at peace. Your spirit will forever live on within me, in the way I laugh, love, and live my life. I will keep your memory alive by sharing stories of your kindness, courage, and compassion with future generations. As I navigate through life without your physical presence, I know I'll face challenges and moments of weakness. But I'll remember your resilience and the strength you instilled in me. I will continue to make you and Dad proud. Thank you, Mom, for everything you did and for being the best mother I could have ever asked for. I may not be able to hold your hand anymore, but you will forever hold a special place in my heart. I love you unconditionally, and I will carry your love with me every step of the way.
