Welcome to Barcelona FOREWORD
The local organizing committee and Cosmocaixa would like to welcome you to the 30th Congress of
the New European Society for Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry (ESCPB 2016).
ESCPB was founded in 1978 and soon became one the most important scientific platforms for promoting
and supporting comparative physiology and biochemistry in Europe. The society was renewed in 2007 to
incorporate recent developments and novel technologies in environmental and life sciences, gaining a
wider perspective and potential for innovation. Since its foundation, 29 ESCPB congresses have been
organized in locations across Europe (Ravenna, Innsbruck, Bilbao, Glasgow). ESCPB is open to scientists
interested in comparative aspects of physiology and biochemistry, with a special emphasis on integration
of environmental aspects as modulating factors of physiological, cellular, biochemical and molecular pro-
cesses.
We have prepared an attractive program aimed to encourage the interaction between basic and applied
research science and encouraging the participation of young researchers. We hope you enjoy the meeting
and your stay in Barcelona!

SOCIAL PROGRAM Visit to Planetarium
Monday 5th September
at 18:00
CosmoCaixa is the science museum in Barcelona run by "la Caixa" Community Projects, and is de-
signed to stimulate people's knowledge and opinion of science through exhibitions and a wide variety
of activities.
The museum building is just as fascinating as its contents. Cosmocaixa is a beautiful example of
modernist architecture, designed and built between 1904 and 1909 by Josep Domènech i Estapà.
The modern extension carried out in 2004 highlighted the value of the century-old building while
placing it in a new context.
Highlights of exhibitions include the Flooded Forest (Bosc inundat), which recreates 1,000 m2 of an
Amazonian rainforest ecosystem and features piranhas, crocodiles and other animal and plant spe-
cies typical to the zone; the Geological Wall, comprising seven spectacular sections of real rock
which illustrate the world's different geological structures; and the Room of Matter, An enthralling
journey through the evolution of matter and life on our planet, with experiments, real pieces and liv-
ing beings. Finally, the Planetarium invites you to take a journey through space and time, past the
stars and planets of the firmament.
Please notice that entrance to the Planetarium is limited to 130 participants. To access the session,
just show your badge to the staff.

Barcelona is one of major Mediterranean cities and the second largest city in Spain. There are LOCAL INFORMATION
many reasons which explain why it has attracted visitors from all over the world for may years. There
are may “Barcelonas” to be explored: the old town with Roman walls, the gothic district with palaces
and churches from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, the well-structured Eixample district, the heart of
Modernism and the new Olympic Barcelona.
Banks
Official opening hours of banks in Spain are from 8:30 to 14:00 from Monday to Friday, they are
closed in the afternoon. It is possible to change foreign currency into Euros in the main city hotels.
Climate
Barcelona enjoys a Mediterranean climate with mild, sunny winters, warm summers and relatively
low rainfall. The average temperature in September ranges from 19 to 26 ºC. Our sunny summer
days are ideal for strolling along the promenades or sitting out on restaurant or café terraces.
Public Transportation
Barcelona has a good, comprehensive public transport network, with special ten-trip and one, two or
three-day tickets valid on bus, metro and local trains. Taxis are abundant. Free parking is very lim-
ited in the city centre and car parks are expensive, so car rental is only recommended to use outside
the city. For additional information, please visit the web page: www.tmb.cat/en/home
Shopping
Normal trading shopping hours are Monday to Saturday from 9:00 to 13:30 and 16:30 to 20:30.
Shopping malls are opened from 10:00 to 22:00.
Tipping
Service is generally included in restaurant bills. A 10% tip is customary to show appreciation of ser-
vices provided.
VAT
There is a variable value added tax (VAT) of 10% to 21% applied to most items and services but in
most prices you will see it included. When it is not included, this should be clearly indicated.
