DOQUIRO Brazilian Self Defense

DOQUIRU

Doquiru and Self Defense created in Brazil that combines the training
methods of Mixed Martial Arts with realistic Self Defense. Doquiru is a
self-defense created by a group of Brazilians.
Doquiru is an effective, modern, and dynamic self-defense and fighting
system. It is designed to be practical and intuitive for people of any age,
shape, or size. The techniques expand on your natural instincts to deve-
lop skills quickly and effectively, while enabling you to address attacks
under any scenario. You will learn how to defend yourself and your loved
ones, while gaining increased awareness and instinctive reflexes.
Doquiru was developed in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, combining the most
effective techniques and philosophy from various Self Defence and Mi-
xed Martial Arts training. It was originally taught to the Public security
group, and instruction for Mixed Martial Arts in the late 90s. Multiple
techniques of Doquiru exist today: techniques civilian (self-defense),
techniques law enforcement (arrest or detain), and techniques military.
Doquiru is a pure self defense and striking system. We train in Doquiru
to help us avoid and survive the worst case scenarios. If someone is
threatening your life, we train on how to avoid that scenario to begin
with, and if it is already beyond the point of no return, we are trained to
use the most effective strikes and techniques to prevail, while under ex-
treme stress. There are no elaborate choreographies nor absolutes.
There are no uniforms and no traditions. We do not train in Doquiru to
start fights or show off. We train to save our own lives and the lives of
our loved ones.
No experience is necessary to begin Doquiru. In the beginning, you will
learn basic stances, striking, techniques for falling and getting up safely,
and basic defenses against common attacks including chokes and he-
adlocks. In addition to learning how to deal with an attack, you will train
to perform better under stress and learn awareness and prevention tech-
niques that will help keep you from getting into problematic situations.
After mastering the basics, advanced students will train to deal with mul-
tiple simultaneous attackers, weapons, complicated situations, and learn
advanced combative and weapon techniques (standing up or on the
ground).
For beginners, Doquiru White belts classes are the perfect class to take
for your first class in Doquiru.

DOQUIRO Brazilian Self Defense

We rotate through the material constantly and do not have a set rotation
or a set “introductory class”.
We find that most students cover and practice all of the material suffici-
ently after about 4 months or 35 classes to be ready for the Yellow belts
test. We know it’s sometimes intense to join in on an ongoing class, but
this is a part of the training. Self-defense means training under intense
and unsettling circumstances. If you want to be able to react calmly du-
ring the unexpected, it’s critical that you train under stress. Join in, and
do your best. All ages, shapes, and sizes can learn life saving skills from
Doquiru training.
For students coming from other martial arts: Since our material and pur-
pose is different from other martial arts, we ask that you begin in White
belts classes until you have received instructor approval to advance.

SELF DEFENSE RULES

 Hands are deadly (Always watch your opponent's hands)
 Situational Awareness is more important than

actual fighting skills. ( Be aware of what’s in your area. If

you are in a situation where an attack is imminent, having a good
idea of where the exit points are and what you can use as a weapon
are all things that can help get you out alive. )

 Hurt them First ( If a fight is unavoidable, and you really feel

like you are in danger of bodily harm, you are going to want to take
the attacker out before they can hurt you. Your goal is to immobilize
the attacker and physiologically defeat anyone who may be thinking
about joining the fight. )

 There is no cake recipe (In self-defense there is no defen-

se step by step or magic formula. The scenario can change quickly
in self-defense for this reason, defenses must be trained in all situa-
tions of violence and variations in these situations)

 Aggressive always resists and strikes (All weapon-

disarming training of an aggressor, defense or attack. It must be ta-
ken into account that the aggressor will resist and attack. All of this
must be taken into account even in the training of the personal de-
fense Doquiru.)

 A self-defense action is a struggle for life.
 Observe the aggressor's metal state (If an individual

wants to attack you. He may be framed in one of the following situa-
tions: he may have an altered conscience due to drugs, feelings or a
metal state, he may be accompanied by helpers, he may be armed,
he can know how to defend himself or etc.)

 If it complicated Abandoned (If a self defense movement

is too complicated it is ineffective and must be abandoned)

 Dialogue ( Try to defuse the situation by talking reasonably and

not getting into a verbal confrontation. )

 Direction ( Issue clear, firm commands. Shout 'Stop!' Most peo-

ple have been exposed to some form of discipline at some time, and
like a dog conditioned to its master's commands, your attacker will
hesitate, even if it is only for a fraction of a second. His discipline and
reactions may be fuddled with booze, or masked by drugs, but in the
back of his mind the command registers,

DOQUIRO Brazilian Self Defense

and he knows that he is in the wrong. He may well keep coming, but
you have shaved a sliver off his self-confidence, and you have time
to enable you to get the first strike in.)

 Debriefing ( The attacker is on the floor, hurt, and you explain

why you did it, and then you are supportive, treating him in a way he
would never have treated you if he had won the fight.)

 Documentation (Finally, you make sure you have access to

some willing witnesses in case there are repercussions. )

Awareness is the key
Increasing your personal awareness is an integral part of crime preven-
tion, and perhaps the single most important element of effective self-
defense. An awareness of the reality of crime and violence, as well as an
awareness of your environment, are the keys to your personal security.
Being aware does not have to involve paranoia. You can train yourself to
be more alert, and adjust your level of awareness as needed. For instan-
ce, if you have good locks and live in a decent area, you shouldn't have
to be constantly on guard. On the other hand, if you're out late at night,
perhaps a little paranoia is a good thing. Just use good common sense
and remember to pay attention to what's happening around you, and you
will go a long way towards keeping yourself safe, in an increasingly hosti-
le world.

DOQUIRO Brazilian Self Defense

Developing a survival mind set

No one has the right to harm you or the ones you love, buy violence do-
es exist and it can touch your life at any time. If it does happen, and you
aren't mentally prepared to deal with it, you will most likely become fro-
zen in fear. The best way to avoid this is to develop a survival mind set.
Imagine yourself in a dangerous situation and visualize what actions you
might take to survive and escape, The key is to address your fears befo-
re you are confronted with them. While it is unpleasant to visualize your-
self as the victim of a rape, robbery or assault, it's necessary to prepare
the mind to deal with the trauma. Preparation (while you're still in a safe
environment) is the key.

Trust your instincts

Learn to trust your instincts and listen to what your intuition tells you.
Trust those "little voices" when they tell you that something (or some-
one) "just doesn't look right." All of your senses should come to full alert,
and you should be prepared to take action (if it's necessary) to get out of
the situation or away from that person as fast as possible.

Avoid presenting a victim profile

Crime victims are frequently chosen because they are easy targets. Cri-
minals prey on the weak or unsuspecting, and usually avoid people who
are aware of what's going on and might put up a fight. When out in pu-
blic, look people in the eye, keep your head up, and walk with a confi-
dent stride. This tells the predator that you are more likely to see him co-
ming and resist. Without the element of surprise, they will likely pass you
up for someone who'll put up less of a fight.

DOQUIRO Brazilian Self Defense

Lights, people and noise

"Just use good common sense and remember to pay attention to what's
happening around you, and you will go a long way towards keeping your-
self safe..." Always remember that your greatest allies are lights, people
and noise. These are the three things that criminals fear most, because
they increase the likelihood that they will be seen or caught. Whenever
possible travel in groups and in open, populated areas - especially at ni-
ght. Steer clear of dark areas or isolated places where criminals will have
the advantage - especially if you are by yourself.

Your first priority is escape

If you do end up in a dangerous situation, remember that your number
one priority is not to fight, but to escape. Obviously, the best plan is not
to be there in the first place, but if you do find yourself in trouble, don't
hesitate to take every available escape route. If you are confronted and
you cannot immediately escape, you may want to consider complying, at
least until you can escape. When faced with someone who demands
your wallet, purse, jewelry etc... - give it to them, and get out of there. No
possession, however valuable, is worth risking your life over.

DOQUIRO Brazilian Self Defense

You must react quickly

One of the greatest challenges to defending yourself is that in the real
world (unlike in the movies) acts of violence usually happen very quickly.
When an attack occurs suddenly (even though there are usually warning
signs), you are at an exteme disadvantage, if you are not prepared to re-
act. This is especially true if you rely solely on some form of weapon for
your defense. Pepper spray, stun guns and firearms are useless if you
can't get to them instantly when you need them. So try to anticipate dan-
gerous situations in advance (such as walking to your car at night) and
prepare yourself to take quick action.

Almost anything can be a weapon

In an extreme situation, you can use many everyday objects as a wea-
pon. A pen or pencil can be used as a dagger, or a phone or lamp could
be used as a club. Anything that is harder, sharper or more resilient than
your hands can be used effectively, so take the time (preferably in ad-
vance) to look around for everyday objects that you could use to defend
against a violent attacker.

When attacked...attack back

One of the most importance tenets of self-defense is that when attacked
- you must attack back! You need to make your attacker worry about
their own safety, instead of how they're going to hurt you. In an extreme
situation, you may have to be vicious. Attack your assailant's weaker
points, like their eyes, groin or throat. Do not hesitate, since it will only gi-
ve your attacker more time to formulate their own attack. Overwhelm
your assailant, trying to momentarily disable them, so you can escape!

DOQUIRO Brazilian Self Defense

The element of surprise

Second to awareness, surprise is perhaps the most important element of
effective self-defense. Using it to your advantage can give you a devas-
tating edge in a confrontation. The number of deceptive counterattacks is
limited only by your imagination. For example, you might pretend to be
passive, by appearing to submit to your assailants wishes, only to attack
them when they least expect it. You might also try to talk to your attacker,
then suddenly throw something at their face - and run. In any case, it will
be your ability to stay as calm as possible, while you keep thinking, that
will make the difference.

When approaching your car or home, have your key in hand and get insi-
de your house or car quickly. Keep the doors locked, even if leaving for a
few minutes.

If you are attacked and decide to fight back, remember the attackers vul-
nerable areas:

eyes, nose, neck, groin and knee

By pulling, kicking, hitting or gouging one of these areas, you may give
yourself time to escape.

Better yet - take a DOQUIRU course so you have an awareness of what
to do and can gauge the situation better.

SAFEGUARDS YOU CAN TAKE:

For Personal Security
When walking, do not carry your purse by the handle or strap. Keep it
close to your body.
Never leave your purse lying on a counter or in a shopping cart. Always
keep closures fastened.
Walk only on well-lighted, well traveled streets. Avoid parks, dark parking
lots and construction areas after dark.
Walk near the curb rather than near buildings, alleys or shrubbery.
If you believe your are being followed as you walk, turn around and look.
If you are in danger, you can prepare to deal with it.
If, while you are walking, you are accosted by someone in a car, run in a
direction opposite to the way the car is traveling. In the time it takes the
car to turn around, you can be gone.

When Driving
 Always check the back seat of your car for intruders before entering.
 If you are being followed in a car, do not drive home. Drive to a police,

fire or gas station, or any other well-lighted area. Remember your horn
is a good alarm.
 To prevent carjacking, lock all doors, even when driving.
 When stopped in traffic, leave enough space between your car and
the car ahead for quick departure.
 If another driver bumps your vehicle, do not stop. Either drive to a well
-traveled area to inspect the damage or attempt to get the vehicle's li-
cense plate number and report it immediately to the police.
 If parked in a shopping mall or supermarket parking lot, look around
for anyone or anything suspicious before approaching the car. If you
feel you are being watched, go back to the store and ask someone to
escort you or call the police.
 If available, take freeways rather than streets through high crime are-
as.

DOQUIRO Brazilian Self Defense

 While driving, stay in the center lane; avoid being blocked into the
curb lane. Above all, if there is no escape, do not resist.

Home Security

 Use strong locks on every door of your home, and a chain lock or peephole on
all windowless doors.

 Using a Home Security system can lower the chances of being a victim of home
invasion.

 Never open your door until you know who is standing on the other side. Repair
or delivery persons can be identified by their identification cards by calling their
places of employment.

 Do not put your first name on your mailbox or in the telephone directory. Use
your first name initials.

 Have your keys in you hand, both to and from your home and car. Keep the key
you intend to use poised in a position so it could be used as a weapon. Know
which way your key goes into the lock.

 If you find evidence that an intruder has entered your home, DO NOT ENTER.
Call police immediately from a nearby house.

 If you are hesitant about entering an elevator with a stranger, wait for the next
elevator. When in the elevator, stand close to the control panel and know where
the alarm is located.

 Carry a whistle in your hand or around you wrist. Use it if you feel threatened.
 Do not allow anyone to follow you into your building. Just because the person is

holding a key, it does not mean the key fits the door to your building.
 Do not go to the basement laundry room alone. Do you laundry with a friend.
 Inform your baby-sitter of all precautionary rules you follow. Insist, for the safety

of the baby-sitter and your children, that these rules be followed in your absen-
ce.
 Do no give personal information to strangers over the phone, or let the caller
know that your are home alone.
 If you receive a "wrong number" call, never disclose you phone number on na-
me. Ask what number the caller is trying to reach and instruct the caller to dial
again.
 If you receive an obscene phone call, hang up immediately and notify the police.
If calls persist, keep a whistle near the phone. At the next obscene call, blow the
whistle loudly into the mouthpiece.

SELF CONTROL
If we choose a reaction, we must first believe that we can react, insecuri-
ty generates doubt, doubt generates error, error can be fatal. I repeat:
"Only carry out the reaction if you believe you can and if you are sure
you should do it".
Controlling fear is not eliminating it, but making it your ally. Fear must be
channeled to use a technique that will incapacitate the opponent by im-
mobilizing him. Otherwise, fear will paralyze your actions and you will
become an easier target.
Imagine the situation: everyday being attacked from behind with a
punch. Terrible isn't it? How many times would it take for you to be awa-
re of everything that happens around you? The human being has the in-
credible ability to adapt and shape himself according to the situation. An
ability to anticipate danger must be developed, especially by increasing
the degree of attention.
What to do? It's a tough question, isn't it? The training will strengthen
your body, over time the attacks will be easier and easier to defend, the
counter-attack will happen more and more naturally, your strikes will be-
come fast and accurate.
.
POSITIVE THINKING
The correct mental attitude is absolutely essential to successful self- de-
fense. You must learn to foster great self-belief, read a potential aggres-
sor's body language and train your mind to overcome fear. You can even
deal with pain with the right mental approach.

DOQUIRO Brazilian Self Defense

THREATS
In the preliminary verbal confrontation leading up to a fight, many people
issue bloodthirsty threats that they do not really intend to carry out.
'You're dead. Let me at him, I'm going to kill him. I'll maim you, you bas-
tard', and so on. Always refrain from this sort of threat. Ifyou have been
heard to threaten someone with death, and then he dies accidentally in a
subsequent fight, this will be used as evidence of murderous intent by a
prosecuting lawyer in a court of law.

DOQUIRO Brazilian Self Defense

SELF-DEFENSE AND THE LAW

In most Western countries, the law allows you to defend yourself with the
minimum amount of force necessary. That is why the four Ds (see abo-
ve) are so important.
Excessive force You will have warned an attacker before you put him
down, and you have witnesses who will back you up. But if, after he is on
the ground, you continue to kick him, punch him, bang his head on the
floor, you are in the wrong in the eyes of the law. The law does not like
muggers and rapists any more than you do, but it draws the line at killing
them or crippling them for life. Use the minimum amount of force neces-
sary. Of course, this will vary according to how much force the attacker
offered, whether he was armed, and whether there was more than one
attacker against you.
Weapons When you use some sort of weapon to defend yourself, the
law is even stricter. You are not allowed to carry any sort of weapon,
including things like pool cues and baseball bats, which show an intent to
use violence. You can carry an umbrella or a walking stick, because it is
impossible to legislate against these. The law will come down on you he-
avily if you use a knife or a gun. Disabling spray canisters, such as pep-
per spray, are also illegal in many countries. However, a woman could
use a hair spray to discourage an attacker. In the section on selfdefense
techniques later in the book, we deal with a whole range of everyday le-
gal items which can be used very effectively against an attacker. If, in the
end, as far as the law is concerned, you have acted reasonably in defen-
ding yourself or your family, and have not pressed your advantage to the
extent that you have maimed the aggressor, you should get a sympathe-
tic hearing, particularly if you have taken down the names of a few relia-
ble witnesses. So be aware of the laws of the country you are in, and do
not forget the Documentation part of the four Ds. It could save you a lot
of grief.

DOQUIRO Brazilian Self Defense

For successful self-defense, you need to believe in yourself. You also
need to have self-esteem, which is not quite the same thing. Believing
in yourself is partly about having confidence in your ability to deter or
overcome an attack. You have made yourself more physically fit, and
you have learned self-defense techniques and practiced them repea-
tedly until they are automatic. You are physically prepared for selfdefen-
se, and you are confident that you can win and survive.
Self-esteem This is more to do with how you feel about yourself as a
person. In a conflict, this comes into play because you know that you are
in the right. This book teaches you how to act against the undisciplined,
the unscrupulous, the drunk or drugged, and the dishonest,
who do not play by the rules, but act according to the dictates of their
greed, lust, anger and stupidity. You can deal with these people if you
believe in yourself and are determined to frustrate their antisocial ac-
tions. To be prepared for the unexpected attack you have to get your
mind focused. It is necessary to move from a pleasant, passive outlook if
you are to defend yourself from someone who is trying to violate,
injure or even kill you. You must have a strong mental attitude and con-
trol your emotions. Confidence, self-belief and high self-esteem all come
into this.

DOQUIRO Brazilian Self Defense

ELBOWS
Elbow refers to a strike made with the elbow. Naturally, elbow strikes
should only be applied at close range, offensively or defensively. What is
interesting is that they are very versatile, as they can have the trajectory,
come and go from any point.
Everyone has elbows, and they are always hard, bony and pointed.
They make excellent weapons at close range, delivering a surprising
amount of power without requiring a great degree of skill to use.

Use Your Elbows

Elbows are extremely strong and durable, which is why they make a gre-
at weapon when you are being attacked. They are more effective than
punching when at a close range. Your elbow is sharper than you may
think, which means you may actually cause cuts on your attacker’s face.
A hard enough hit to the temple of your attacker is enough to immedia-
tely knock them unconscious, and in some cases, cause death.

PALM
It is a blow similar to a punch, but the area of contact / impact resides at
the inner base of the wrist joint.
Women generally will not be able to punch a man in the face. So instead
of teaching her to placate a fist with her fist and better teach her to hit
with the palm of her hand.

SLASH
Bring your hand to keep your fingers pressed against each other and
your thumb inward. The movement should be executed in the form of a
lash, to increase the power of the attack, at the end of the movement re-
main relaxed.
Slash uses the so-called "hand knife", the outer part of the flat hand, that
is, the side of the hand at the base of the little finger.
Use this technique to attack the opponent's temples, neck and sides.
.

DOQUIRO Brazilian Self Defense

HEAD
A header is a doquiru hit delivered to unbalance or bruise the opponent,
hitting him in the chest, belly or face.
To perform this technique properly the weight of the entire body must be
put into the strike. One option is holding the opponent clothes or the
back of his neck, The body gains momentum by leaning forward and
pushing itself with the toes. The strike hits the opponent with the top of
the forehead.
This strike is very quick but it's range is short. It is only due to its qui-
ckness that it is can surprise. This technique is can also very be useful
when fighting on the ground (especially in the "mount" position)
Headbutt
You may be scared of hurting yourself, but when done correctly, you can
severely injure your attacker. Grab your attacker’s shirt collar, push them
back, and then jerk them forward. This momentum keeps their shoulders
and arms open which will make your headbutt more effective. Be sure to
be looking at the ground when your head makes a connection to their fa-
ce.

TAEKDOWN
Takedown is a technique that involves off-balancing an opponent and
bringing him or her to the ground with the attacker landing on top. The
process of quickly advancing on an opponent and attempting a take-
down is known as shooting for a takedown, or simply shooting. Take-
downs are usually distinguished from throws by amplitude and impact,
with throws being a subset of takedown. Takedowns are featured in all
forms of wrestling and stand-up grappling.

of the foot, toes or knee (the latter is also known as a knee strike). This
type of attack is used frequently by individuals in the context of stand-up
fighting.
