MALAY TRADITIONAL DANCE

S A B A H N E W C R E A T I O N D A N C E The dance Raja Berangkat combines elements of art and culture originating from the Tidung ethnic group in Sabah. This dance was first created in the late 1970s and began to be widely introduced in the 1980s, particularly during official events to welcome dignitaries and honored guests in the Tawau district, Sabah. Created by the late Almarhum Tuan Haji Ismail bin Haji Ahin, the former chairman of the Tidung Arts Association (PASIT), the dance was originally inspired by the traditional healing practices of the Tidung community, particularly the movements of a shaman performing the shawal ritual. The dance Raja Berangkat is not merely an artistic performance but also serves as a symbol of respect for guests and dignitaries visiting Tawau. In its early form, the movements in this dance reflected elements of healing, showcasing delicate and meaningful gestures that symbolized the process of recovery and restoration through traditional healing rituals. However, with the evolution of performing arts, the Restar'25 group has taken the initiative to revitalize this dance with a more modern approach. Fans and scarves, which are traditional tools used in Tidung culture to welcome guests, are now incorporated as key elements in the dance. More dynamic and contemporary movements have been introduced, while the music has been rearranged to align with the development of contemporary stage arts.

S A R A W A K N E W C R E A T I O N D A N C E Alai Babulang This dance showcases the rich and diverse movements of the Bisaya community in Sarawak as they celebrate Pesta Babulang, a grand cultural festival. Gracefully performed with fans as the central prop, the choreography beautifully captures the essence of social interactions between Bisaya men and women. The dance not only highlights the elegance of their traditions but also reflects the warmth and harmony of their close-knit community.

N E G E R I S E M B I L A N F O L K D A N C E This performance highlights the unique Minangkabau culture, which is the identity of Negeri Sembilan, through soft, energetic, and symbolic dance movements. The beauty of this heritage is showcased through iconic dances such as Randai, which displays agility and the spirit of the wanderer. Tari Endang, symbolizing the unity of the community and Tari Piring Lilin, representing gentleness and politeness. Tari Piring Lambung and Titi Gelas demonstrate skill and bravery in maintaining balance in life. With a fresh new arrangement, this performance celebrates the beauty of dance as a reflection of the culture and identity of Negeri Sembilan.

CONTEMPORARY DANCE

CONTEMPORARY DANCE Moi Panau “Marriage is not just the union of two hearts, but a journey together, rooted in tradition, bound by love. ” Moi Panau brings to life the Mogongoi marriage customs of the Dusun Liwan community in Tambunan, Sabah. Through contemporary dance infused with traditional elements, this piece portrays the journey of two souls. Each step symbolizes trust, hope, and the heritage that binds them to one destiny. “Walking together, embracing the past, and shaping the future. ”
