กุ้ง ท่องพระคัมภีร์บทนี้ซ้ำ�แล้วซ้ำ�อีก ขณะเดียวกันเธอก็ได้ยินเสียง

หยิบจับอุปกรณ์ของพยาบาลอย่างต่อเนื่อง
“ตื้ด ตื้ด… “ เสียงโทรศัพท์มือถือเครื่องหนึ่งดังขึ้น นานหลายที
แต่ไม่มีใครรับสาย กุ้งเข้าใจว่า พยาบาลและหมอคงกำ�ลังง่วนและยุ่ง
กับการเตรียมอุปกรณ์ จึงไม่มีใครว่างรับ ไม่นานนัก เสียงโทรศัพท์ที่
เงียบไปก็ดังขึ้นอีกอย่างไม่ลดละ ราวกับว่าอีกฝ่ายมีเรื่องด่วนจริงๆ
“สวัสดีค่ะ” พยาบาลคนหนึ่งตัดสินใจที่จะรับสาย
สักพัก กุ้งก็ได้ยินเสียงของหมอดังขึ้น
“ครับอาจารย์ ครับๆ ใช้ได้ใช่ไหมครับ…”
การสนทนาของคุณหมอกับผู้ที่อยู่ปลายสายดำ�เนินต่อไปอีกระยะ
หนึ่ง ซึ่งเป็นภาษาทางการแพทย์ที่เกินความเข้าใจของกุ้ง
สิ้นเสียงการสนทนา ม่านกั้นก็ถูกเปิดออก กุ้งรีบลุกขึ้นไปหาแม่
เมื่อเห็นสภาพของแม่ที่ไม่มีรอยบาดแผลใดๆ เธอรีบหันไปหา
พยาบาล
“คุณหมอไม่ได้เจาะปอดของแม่หรอกหรือคะ” กุ้งถามด้วยความ
ฉงน

“ไม่ต้องแล้วค่ะ” พยาบาลตอบสั้นๆ ขณะกำ�ลังเดินออกจากห้อง
กุ้งตรงรี่เข้าไปกอดแม่ด้วยความดีใจ
“แม่.. แม่ไม่ต้องเจาะปอดแล้วนะ” เธอพูดปลอบใจแม่ ด้วยเสียง
สั่นเครือ
“จากนี้ไป แม่จะไม่ต้องเจ็บตัวอีกแล้วนะ”
เหตุการณ์เมื่อครู่ จะบังเอิญหรือไม่ สำ�หรับคนอื่นนั้น.. คงตอบ
ยาก
แต่สำ�หรับกุ้ง เธอเชื่อว่า มันคือความอัศจรรย์ของพระเจ้า ที่
ทรงสำ�แดงให้ปรากฏขึ้นในชีวิตของเธอและแม่
“พระเจ้า…ดีต่อฉัน และพระองค์ทรงเติมฉัน ในวันที่อ่อนล้า
พระองค์ทันเวลาเสมอ… ไม่ช้า และไม่สาย ไม่รีบร้อนตามใจฉัน ทรง
ดี ดีต่อฉัน และทรงทันเวลาเสมอ”
เสียงบทเพลงหนึ่งที่ดังกังวานอยู่ภายในใจ อันเต็มไปด้วยความ
ชื่นชมยินดีของเธอ ต่อพระเมตตาของพระเจ้า..ที่เธอรัก

Chapter 9:

Miracle Protection

K ung recited these scriptures over and over again to herself.

At the same time, she c ontinuously heard the nurses pre-
paring the equipment.
“Ring...Ring,” a mobile phone rang for a long time, but
no one picked it up. Kung thought that the doctor and nurses
were probably busy preparing and setting up the equipment
for the lung puncture, so no one was available to answer. Not
long after, the phone rang again. It seemed as if the call was
urgent.
“Hello,” one of the nurses answered the call. Then Kung
heard the doctor’s voice, “Yes, Sir. Is the tissue sample usable
and sufficient?”

The doctor’s conversation with the person on the other
end of the line continued for a while with medical termino-
logy beyond Kung’s understanding.
Once the conversation ended, the curtain between Kung
and Mom was opened. Kung hurriedly got up and went to
see her mother. Upon seeing that her mother lacked any
wounds, she quickly turned to the nurse.
“Didn’t the doctor perform a puncture on my mother’s
lung?” Kung was puzzled.
“There is no longer any need to do it,” said the nurse
tersely as she walked out of the room.
Kung hugged her mother happily. “Mom, you don’t
need a lung puncture anymore,” she said, comforting her in
a trembling voice.
Was this a coincidence? For some people, this might be
difficult to answer, but Kung believed it was a miracle from
God and that He had intervened in their lives.

Kung remembered a Thai Christian song: “God is good
to me, and He fills me up in my exhausted tiring days. He
is on time and his help comes on time. He is never too
late nor too early for help. He is so good to me and is
always on time.” The song resonated in Kung’s mind. Her
heart was filled with joy at the merc y of the Lord whom she
loved.

“สวัสดีครับ คือ…อย่างนี้นะ ผลตรวจของชิ้นเนื้อที่ส่งไป ยืนยัน
ว่าเป็นเซลล์มะเร็งจริงๆ แต่ก็เป็นชนิดเซลล์ที่ขนาดไม่เล็ก (non-small
cell type) ซึ่งไม่แพร่กระจายอย่างรวดเร็ว เหมือนกับชนิดเซลล์ที่ขนาด
เล็ก (small cell type)”
กุ้งฟังต่ออย่างตั้งใจ
“ส่วนผลตรวจว่าจะใช้ยามุ่งเป้าได้ไหม เราพบว่าเซลล์ไม่ตอบ
สนองกับ EGFR inhibitors ซึ่งคนเป็นมะเร็งส่วนใหญ่ ราว 60% จะ
ใช้ได้”
สีหน้าของกุ้งเริ่มไม่ดี
“ดังนั้น ขั้นต่อไปคือ รอฟังผลว่า เซลล์จะตอบสนองกับยามุ่งเป้า
อื่น เช่น ALK inhibitors ไหม ซึ่งจะต้องใช้เวลา 7-10 วัน แต่โอกาสก็
จะมีประมาณ 5% เท่านั้น”
หมอพูดพร้อมกับมองกุ้งด้วยสายตาที่แสดงความเห็นใจ “ระหว่าง
ที่รอผลนี้ แม่ของคุณจะมีอาการทรุดลงเรื่อยๆ…”
กุ้งนิ่งเงียบ พยายามสงบสติ รวบรวมความคิด

หลังจากที่หมอกลับออกไปจากห้องคนไข้ เธอไม่รอช้า รีบส่ง
ข่าวให้กับญาติมิตร เพื่อนๆ และ พี่น้องคริสเตียนที่รู้จักแม่และเธอ ทั้ง
ในเมืองไทยและต่างประเทศ
“เราต้องการคำ�อธิษฐานเป็นพิเศษค่ะ… แม้ความหวังจะดูน้อยนิด
แต่กุ้งจะไม่ยอมแพ้ กุ้งจะทูลขอความช่วยเหลือจากพระเจ้า”
เธอเริ่มต้นเขียน พร้อมทั้งให้รายละเอียดตามที่หมอได้บอกเธอ
ภายหลังจากที่เธอได้ส่งข้อความออกไป มีผู้คนมากมายได้รวมใจ
กันอธิษฐานให้แม่ของเธอ

ถ้อยคำ�หนุนใจมากมาย หลั่งไหลมาจากทั่วสารทิศ จากทั้งใน
ทวีปอเมริกา ยุโรป และ เอเชีย
แม้แต่ผู้อำ�นวยการฝ่ายวิชาการของโรงเรียนที่ลูกชายสองคน
ของเธอเรียนอยู่ ก็ได้ขออนุญาตเธอที่จะแบ่งปันข่าวนี้กับบรรดาอาจารย์
ท่านอื่นๆ ในโรงเรียน เพื่อให้ร่วมใจกันอธิษฐานเผื่อแม่ของเธอ

Hundreds of Candlelights

“Hello, Doctor,” Kung greeted as soon as the doctor

entered the room.
“Good Morning. The biopsy confirmed that it was a
cancer cell of a non-small cell type, which does not spread
as quickly as a small cell type.”
Kung listened intently.
“Regarding targeted therapy drugs, we found that
the c ells did not respond to EGFR inhibitors, whic h is
useful with 60% of Asian people fighting lung cancers.”
Kung’s expression began to sour.
“So the next step is to wait and see if the cells will
respond to other targeted drugs such as ALK inhibitors,
which takes 7-10 days. The chance of success is only 5%.”

The doctor looked at Kung with sympathy and said,
“While waiting for this result, your mother will continue
to deteriorate.”
Kung remained silent, trying to calm herself, collecting
her thoughts.
After the doctor left the room, Kung urgently sent news
to relatives, friends, and Christian brothers and sisters who
knew her and her mother in Thailand and abroad.
“We need a special prayer, and even if hope seems small,
I will not give up. I will ask God for help.” She started writing
the message with the details as the doctor had told her.
Once the message was sent, many people began to pray
for her mother.
“Sis Kung, all the professors at the seminary will pray
for your mother.”
“Kung, my husband and I will fast and pray for your
mom.”
“Sis Kung, my wife, my father, and I are praying for you
both.”

Many words of encouragement flowed from all over
the world: the Americas, Europe, and Asia.
Even the headmaster of the school where her two sons
were studying asked her permission to share this news with
other teachers in the school so they could pray for her mother.
In the meantime, the two children were allowed to
switch to online learning, knowing that now the children
would have to stay in Thailand for a long time. They did not
know when they would return to Ukraine.

The Sky Cries

“When your heart feels lonely and you can’t find your

way. When there are so many things going on that you don’t
know what to do. I want you to bow down and pray - God
always has a way.”
This song resonated in Kung’s mind while sitting be-
side her mother’s bed. Mom was sleeping.
“God, please have mercy on my mother. Could you please
give me a chance to have more time with her so that I can
take care of Mom a little longer?” Her voice was soft, lest she
awaken those who slept, but it came from the bottom of her
heart.
Tears dropped and dropped, flowing down her cheeks
like twin rivers.

“ขอบคุณมากค่ะคุณหมอ ขอบคุณจริงๆ ค่ะ”

By God ‘s Grace

Ten days of waiting felt like ten months to Kung. As soon as

the doctor entered the room, Kung stood up and anxiously
listened.
“The results have arrived. Kung, your mom c an use
the ALK inhibitors; the cells respond very well to this drug.”
“Thank God!” were the first words that came out of her
mouth. Kung smiled with great joy. Her heart was leaping.
“We will immediately prescribe medication so your
mother can start to take it this evening. We will wait until
tomorrow to see if there are any side effects. If everything
is good, then your mother can be discharged from the
hospital tomorrow afternoon.”
“Thank you very much, Doctor. Thank you so much.”

เป็นเวลาเกือบ 18 เดือนแล้ว ที่แม่พัฒกินยามุ่งเป้าเรื่อยมา
มาวันนี้ แม่ของกุ้งสามารถเดินเองได้ อาบน้ำ�เองได้ ทานข้าวเอง
ได้ บางครั้งก็ออกกำ�ลังด้วยการว่ายน้ำ�ด้วย
นี่อาจดูคล้ายเป็นเรื่องปกติสำ�หรับบางคน
แต่สำ�หรับกุ้ง เธอเชื่อในพระคำ�ของพระเจ้าที่ว่า “คำ�อธิษฐานของ
ผู้ชอบธรรม มีพลังทำ�ให้เกิดผล” (ยากอบ 5:16)
พระเจ้าทรงสดับฟังคำ�วิงวอนของเหล่าผู้เชื่อนับร้อย ที่ได้ร่วมใจ

Chapter 13:

The Tree Revived

“Hello, Doctor,” said the 82-year-old woman as she walked

unaided into the outpatient examination room. The wheelchair
and oxygen tanks that she had relied on were notably absent.
“Hello, Pat. How are you?” the doctor greeted her. He
asked about the symptoms while performing a physical ex-
amination and lung check. “Blood results and CT scan results
are good. The tumor is smaller than before as well,” said the
doctor as he settled into the chair.
“It’s rare, a c ase like your mother’s,” c ontinued the doc -
tor as he turned with a smile.
“Mom and I want to thank you very much for every-
thing,” Kung said.
“With pleasure,” he responded.

It’s been almost 18 months sinc e Kung’s mother has
been taking targeted drugs. Today, Kung’s mother can walk
by herself, bathe herself, and eat by herself. Sometimes
she exercises in the pool as well.
For some, this may seem ordinary, but Kung believed in
the Word of God that “The effective prayer of a righteous man
can accomplish much.” (James 5:16 NASB).
God listened to the pleas of hundreds of believers who
came together to pray for her mother with sincere hearts.
Kung knows that her mom’s time will c ome eventually,
for she doesn’t know how many months are left, but at
least she knows that the God she believes in answered her
prayer that night - the night she wept and prayed for just
a bit more time to take care of her mother.

Pat’s Biography

Patanaphan Leerasuntadkul (Pat) was 81
born in Prachinburi Province, Thailand
during the Second World War. She is the
4th c hild of 6 siblings.
Pat’s father and mother are of Chinese
anc estry. They migrated from China to live
in Thailand when China changed its regime
to a communist system.
Her family heard of the Lord Jesus
Christ from the sharing of a Chinese doctor who treated her
father’s tuberculosis. Pat’s father believed that God had mercy
on him and helped him to rec over and was able to live for
another ten years after his bout with TB.
At school age, Pat had to drop out of elementary school
because she needed to help with the family’s shop. Later, Pat
resumed her studies via adult education until she was able to
rec eive her high sc hool diploma, finally graduating from Thai-
land Baptist Theological Seminary.
Although Pat had the opportunity to attend church since
she was little, she did not have a deep and personal relationship
with God until she became an adult. Pat had the opportunity
to read about the history of Jesus Christ’s painful death on the
cross for sinners, so she decided to accept Jesus Christ as her
savior.
In her working years, Pat opened a business selling various
meat produc ts, whic h expanded to inc lude a restaurant and
bakery. She started from scratch and eventually was able to esta-
blish a well-to-do life. Meanwhile, Pat also voluntarily served in
Women’s Baptist Thailand and assisted many foreign missiona-
ries who came to work in Thailand.

About the author

L.S. Crane holds a bachelor’s degree from Mahidol University
International College and a master’s degree in Teaching English
as a Foreign Language from the Language Institute Thammasat
University. She also received a master’s degree in Christian Edu-
cation from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Texas,
USA. She has experience teaching English to students and adults
in Thailand and refugees in the United States.
She is a grateful Thai Christian who wishes to share and
pass on the faith, hope, and love in the Lord Jesus Christ to many
people. She has a vision to see people from all over the world

Foreword

I am a casual reader; there are very few books that I read thoroughly and
repeatedly. "Candlelight in The Storm" is a book that must be read many times.
Every word is meaningful and riveting. The author reflects a daughter’s devotion
as it is tested by a terrible crisis. As you read this, you will empathize with the
daughter’s love, efforts, hope, and endurance related to her mother’s crisis.
Her complete dependence upon God and reliance on the Word of the Lord
to nourish a weary and confused mind are clearly seen. God gave her the
strength to make a bold decision for her beloved mother and she succeeded!
It is evident that God is great, mighty, and full of love and mercy. When we
cry for help, God always answers!
