OUR MISSION

To provide medical, wellness and beauty services to women under the
age of 40 who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, or have tested
positive for a BRCA gene mutation. We focus on a woman's whole being in
order to empower, foster hope and improve the quality of life for women
in the face of this disease.

Dear Friends,

We launched 5 Under 40 in December 2012 in response to a
critically unmet need in the community to address the unique
needs of young women. These include the strong sense of
isolation, dating, managing career growth and raising young
children. The goal of 5 Under 40 is to enlighten women by
arming them with the resources and emotional support to
thrive. In essence, we united so your daughters will grow up
in a world filled with less fear of breast cancer.

Many people ask me, “Why 5 Under 40?” The fact remains
that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in
their lifetime. There is more than one face of this disease and
we don’t believe in singularity in women. There is an alarming
number of women receiving this diagnosis who are at the
highest rate of mortality among all breast cancer cases. Our
wish is for the world to catch a glimpse into the face of young
women with breast cancer. We are not statistics; we are people.

women younger than 40

• Young age at diagnosis has been shown in several large studies to
be associated with higher risk of relapse and death

• Women under 40 years have poorer outcome from breast cancer
likely as a result of more aggressive tumor biology and delays in
diagnosis (no routine breast cancer screening in women younger
than 40)

• Estimated 11,500 new cases each year of breast cancer in women
under 40

• Estimated 1,200 deaths each year from breast cancer in women
under 40

Anxiety and mood issues are common and there are many ways
to get help.

Exercise when you feel up to it. No need to run marathons…
just walking is good.

1 GET CLINICAL BREAST EXAMS REGULARLY
Regular clinical exams performed by your physician, as well as
yourself, are important in women beginning at the age of 20.

2 KNOW YOUR FAMILY HISTORY
Women with a known mutation or genetic predisposition BRCA1
and BRCA2 should start yearly screening by age 30.

3 UNDERSTAND LIMITATIONS & STRENGTHS OF MAMMOGRAPHY
Mammography is currently the best screening tool available for
early detection. However, the tumor can be obscured by dense
breast tissue. Thus, it may not be detected in the mammogram.

4 ASK ABOUT THE DENSITY OF YOUR BREASTS
Ask your radiologist or referring physician about the density of your
breasts. If you have dense breasts, or have other high-risk status,
inquire about breast ultrasound or MRI, in addition to mammography.

5 FIND SUPPORT
For young women, the impact of a breast cancer diagnosis on
sexuality, self-image, fertility, family and career is significant. This is
where support groups can have their greatest impact.

1 THINK ABOUT PRESERVING YOUR FERTILITY
The American Society for Clinical Oncology recommends that women
under 40 consider freezing their eggs before cancer treatment. Some
women may benefit from medication to suppress ovarian function
(GnRH agonists), which may protect eggs from cancer treatment.

2 EGG FREEZING DOES NOT HAVE TO DELAY TREATMENT.
Seek support and advice so you can make an informed decision.

3 KNOW THAT EGG FREEZING DOES NOT INCREASE THE
RISK FOR CANCER RECURRENCE FOR MOST PEOPLE.

4 DON’T THINK: “IT’S TOO LATE FOR ME.”
There are many safe options for treating infertility post cancer even
if you did not freeze your eggs or take medication. Not everyone
will experience infertility with cancer or its treatment. So, if you're
not ready, be sure to talk with your doctor about contraception.

5 REMEMBER LOW-TECH WAYS TO PRESERVE FERTILITY.
Be your healthiest self: Quit smoking, exercise, eat well, get enough
sleep, de-stress.
