Illinois State Council

‘ly Yours

Winter 2019

Editor - Jill Shull - [email protected]

 Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA) International

is an extraordinary  organization – an organization that is
truly defined by the hearts, loyalty, and dedication  of  our
members. An international leadership and service organization,
ESA is a place where members develop meaningful friendships,
find their passion for community service, and continue on the
path of lifelong learning. The Illinois State Council consists of 15
chapters throughout Illinois with the purpose of promoting
philanthropic and service endeavors, educational and leadership
development, friendship and fellowship, and to assist in the
growth of ESA.

All chapters through ESA volunteer and fund raise for St.
Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN and
Easterseals. The Illinois State Council  philanthropy is Camp
New Hope, nestled on the banks of Lake Mattoon in central
Illinois; the camp is a place where developmentally disabled
children and adults have been enjoying the myriad of
recreational programs and activities at the premiere facility since
1974.   Chapter members throughout the state work extensively
within their own communities providing helping hands and fund
raising  and awareness for many projects, such as, Community
Cancer Center, Human Society, Homeless Shelters, Soup
Kitchens, Veterans & Family Readiness programs, Wounded
Warriors, etc.

Through ESA, women and men of all ages, backgrounds,
and interests are united by the desire to make a difference in the
lives of others – as well as their own. Some join collegiate or
community chapters, others join as individual members. But all
leave a positive mark on their communities and the world
around them.

When you join ESA, you become a part of a large
network  – one that supports you, challenges you, and works
with you to help you become your best self. You’ll grow as a
person, becoming more confident and a better leader. You’ll be
introduced to new situations that expand your horizons and
increase your levels of knowledge and understanding. Perhaps
most importantly, you’ll have fun, make lasting memories, and
form deep bonds with fellow members, as you work together to
accomplish good things on a local, state,  national, and
international level.

Winter article – ESA’ly Yours – January 25, 2019

Hello Everyone and welcome to the next fast paced
six months of ESA!

Yes, it is hard to believe that we have gone through
six months of being the Gift of ESA …but, what a
journey it has been!

Right around the corner we have our Officer Nominations due to Terri
Crum on (Feb 1) . Please take a few minutes and consider helping out the
Illinois State Council with YOUR talents. There are so many of our great
members who sometimes just sit back and ‘feel’ that they ‘can’t’ do it or they

just don’t feel encouraged. Please understand that WE, the ISC members, are
ALL here to HELP ONE ANOTHER. Remember that the promise of New
Beginnings in ESA start with YOU!

Just a reminder we have our “Springtastic” ISC Meeting and technical
Workshop coming up on Saturday, March 2 at the Carnegie Public Library in
Charleston. It is being hosted by our Beta Mu sisters and from what I’ve
heard, some FUN times are going to be had …including our Workshop for
those of us technically challenged members!

Then on Saturday, March 23, from 9am till 4pm, ESA headquarters will be

presenting the first Regional Leadership Seminar in St. Louis, MO. The
Registration is $125.00, which includes lunch and the presentation materials.
More information will be presented at our Spring Meeting.

Illinois ESA is moving forward and having new thoughts, ideas, desires and
new members are always welcome!! Look around you, you might be surprised
as to whom wants to become a part of ESA and you never know where they
may appear…never hesitate to ask …share your ESA stories … Encourage
them… Learn from them … Treat them with Respect and continue our Legacy
of ESA. New members are always welcome, not just specifically during a

RUSH. As I’ve said at the beginning of my article: New Friendships and the
promise of New Beginnings in ESA, start with YOU!

I look forward to seeing many of you at our Spring Fling in March …till

then … Think WARM ….THINK SPRING! Kat

Happy New Year!! Hope all of you are trying to stay
warm in this wonderful winter weather. I've heard from
some of the chapters with their new pledges and some
with their elected officer nominations but I need more.
I know it is past the deadline for these but I will be
more than happy to accept any I receive. Remember I'm
asking you to "Step Up In ESA". All of you have the
ability to do any of these positions, you just have to step up and take on the
challenge. If any of you are interested in an appointed office please let me
know. I'm starting to fill them and I want everyone to be happy with their
position. I will be sending emails to some of you asking for your commitment
for next year, please seriously consider my request and accept my offer. There
are a lot of appointed positions to fill so that is why I'm asking if you have a
certain position that you might have considered in the past please consider it
again.
Okay I will get off my soapbox now. My next plea is to find more members.
ESA cannot grow without new members. Luckily we have the collegiate
chapters to put the numbers in but we need our other chapters to "step up"
and try to get new members also. If every chapter would just get one new
member that would be 17 new people in ESA. Surely we should be able to do
that. Ask a friend and spread the word about how ESA is an awesome
organization and supports so many people throughout our United States.
I will not be at the spring board meeting because Celeste Webb and myself
will be at the Leadership conference in Denver Colorado that weekend. I will
be getting ideas and new insights for my upcoming year as your state
president. I hope I will do you proud.
Believe you can make a difference.

I will still be presenting a report at the Spring
ISC meeting. If we have any bylaw changes/
standing rules, they will need to be presented to the
membership and then distributed so that we can
vote on them at ISC Convention in June. I hope that
everyone has considered the options of combining
some of the appointed positions. We are struggling
to fill these positions and maybe this along with the procedure manual will
help others consider accepting an appointment.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I am ready for Spring. Winter is
not my favorite season and we seem to be having a lot of winter.

2018 - 2019 ISC TREASURER

Leann Polston
[email protected]

Greetings Illinois from sunny Florida! I have
slipped away for a month to avoid some of our
January winter. There are no forms due at this
time and all chapter dues are up to date so all is
good. Since I have no treasurer duties to report I
will share the top 8 Florida tourist attractions:
1 Walt Disney World. Walt Disney World
2 Kennedy Space Center. Kennedy Space Center
3 Universal Studios. Universal Studios
4 Miami Beach and the Art Deco Historic District
5 Everglades National Park
6 Daytona 500 International Speedway
7 SeaWorld Orlando
8 Busch Gardens Tampa
I hope to see you all at the Spring Board meeting in Charleston on March 2!

2018 - 2019 ISC WORKSHOP

Adrian Sperduto
[email protected]

Hello all! I’m really looking forward to
hosting a wonderful workshop for everyone this
Spring! It is going to be a “techie” workshop, so
please feel free to bring any and all devices you
would like to get onto the Internet with to the
Spring Meeting. We will be getting everyone
connected to Wifi and exploring the ESA website
while at the same time reviewing reports from all the officers and looking
to see what, if anything, needs to be voted on. For the more advanced of
us I will have some other adventures for you to do once you have finished.
If there are members of your chapter who would like help with technology,
please encourage them to attend the Spring Meeting. My opinion is always
the more the merrier! See everyone in March!

2018 - 2019 ISC AWARDS

Dalena Hall
[email protected]

Greetings from Your Awards Chairman – I hope
this finds all of you thawing out from this frigid
weather.  I, for one, am looking forward to Spring.

As you know almost all of the award forms can
be found on the Illinois ESA website.   Most all of
those forms are due May 10.  Award is defined as a
prize or certificate to a person or group for doing
well.  Another definition is to give due or merit ,something that is deserved.  I
feel that we all deserve recognition for the hard work we do each year.  We do
not do these things for the award we might receive, but for the feeling we get
for doing something to help others.  However, I know that we all feel good
when we are acknowledged for doing good or successfully completing a
project.  As your awards chair, I hope to acknowledge your achievements and
successes.
It only takes a minute to fill out the majority of the forms.  Let’s all
make an effort to fill out the forms, mail them to the respective person, and
enjoy a little fun at our convention when you receive your reward.

2018 - 2019 ISC CHAPLAIN

[email protected]

A warm welcome to all our Illinois sisters. Hope
your Holiday’s were good and Spring comes soon!!
Since the last ESA’ly Yours article I have sent a total
of 11 cards. They are 2 Sympathy , 6 get well and 2
thinking of you. Also I sent Maxine Bohn a birthday
card in honor of her 100th Birthday this month.
She is a MAL who has lived in Florida for the last
several year. Let’s hope she has many more. I will
have a report on these and the ones I received between now and our Board
Meeting in March.  If you know of anyone who is in need of a card please let
me know. Till then hope to see you all in Charleston in March. Stay Warm!

2018 - 2019 ISC COLLEGIATE

Adrian Sperduto
[email protected]

I have been having a great time getting to know
the different collegiate chapters we have in the state.
They are a wonderful and diverse group of folks who
are doing awesome and unique things on each of their
different campuses. I was able to make it to a meeting
of every chapter and started getting to know some of
the members, which has been awesome. My goal for
the Spring semester is to make it to an event held by
each chapter, as well as setting up an efficient and easy
way to share information with the Collegiates using Google Slides, which most
already use during meetings. Getting to work with the girls has really helped
me remember why I got into ESA almost 20 years ago at Illinois State, and I
have to say it has been one of my most favorite jobs I have done for the state.
If you ever want to join me, or are just curious what the college folks are up to,
please do not hesitate to get a hold of me!

Hey, Illinois Sisters!

To take your mind off the piles of snow, start planning your vacation for
June 7-9 as we “Tour the USA With ESA” at the Illinois State Convention. We
will take you across the country, starting out in Pasadena, California at the
Friday night Mixer. What’s so special about Pasadena? Why, the Rose Parade,
of course! You will have the opportunity to be a part of this annual event with
your very own parade entry. We are asking each chapter to construct a
“shoebox float” (approximately the size of a shoebox) exemplifying the parade
theme “Choose to Shine and Be the Gift of ESA”, which just happens to be
State President Kathleen Grissom’s theme! Entries will be judged and awards
will be given in a variety of categories. So get to the drawing board, start
collecting flowers, and see if your chapter can come up with a winner! (By the
way, you don’t have to go all the way to Pasadena. Effingham will be far
enough! See You there!)

2018 - 2019 ISC DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENT
OUTSTANDING YOUTH

Misty Douglas
[email protected]

Hello Sisters and Brothers – I hope that 2019 is
off to a great start for everyone and that you are
staying warm in this frigid cold winter we are
experiencing in Illinois!

It is that time of the year where our chapters
need to start considering nominating someone for the
Distinguished Achievement Award and Outstanding
Youth Award. We can all think of someone in our community that goes above
and beyond to help others. Wouldn’t it be great for them to receive this honor at
our Illinois State Convention in June?
Distinguished Achievement Award nominees should exemplify the
wholesome and inspiring qualities of love, faith, and courage that reflect the
ideals of ESA. They can be someone in the public spotlight or someone working
quietly behind the scenes.
In addition, please consider nominating an Outstanding Youth from your
area. Students should be enrolled in 7th through 12th grade and submit an
essay entitled, “What I Can Contribute to a Better America.”
These forms can be found on the Illinois ESA website. The chosen
winners will be honored at the Illinois State Convention in June. Nominations
must also be postmarked to me no later than May 10, 2019. Now, get those
nominations in! You can email them to me at [email protected] or snail
mail to Misty Douglas, 2213 Prairie Ave, Mattoon, IL 61938.

2018 - 2019 ISC EDUCATIONAL

Jane Raciti
[email protected]

REMINDER: As State Educational Chairperson,
I would like to remind Chapter Educational Chairs to
hold their educational events and turn in their
reports. All chapters turning in 6 or more reports will
receive the Gold Link Award at the State Convention
in June. Reports are due by the 10th of the month
following the month of presentation, the final date
being May 10. You may mail them to me at: Jane
Raciti, 2316 Prairie Av, Mattoon, IL 61938 or email at [email protected].

2018 - 2019 ISC EASTERSEALS

Judy Huntley
[email protected]

I do hope all of you are encouraged to
participate in our Easterseals Challenge that I
presented at our Fall meeting. All those nickels, dimes
and quarters will add up to make a “Big” difference
for those who depend on Easterseals for the 100 year
anniversary.
I will attached the Challenge form for your convenience.  I will collect all
the monies at our Spring Meeting in March
I would like to report that I sent two checks on your behalf to the Central
Illinois Easterseals office for $50 from the Usterwuzzers and $50.50 from our
50-50 Raffle.
It you have an event or had one for Easterseals, please let me know all
about it and if you can take a picture or two.  I would love to share with all of
ESA. It might spark an idea for them.
Take care and hugs to all,

As we begin the new year, I challenge each and every member to really make a difference by
taking on disabilities together. Let’s raise the bar on our commitment and involvement with
Easterseals. I liked Theda’s challenge last year so I am borrowing her idea. I changed it up
a little, but feel it is something that everyone can participate in and won’t take much to see the
difference we can make together. It is my request that we try to do all we can. We have the
Gift of ESA and we need to give a gift back through the good works of Easterseals. Hope you
enjoy the challenge since YOU don’t have to leave your house to help! Do all you can or pick
and choose your favorites. Just please participate taking on disability together!

Hello All,
I hope each of you are well and have settled

into the New Year. But, don’t settle too much! We
must continue our ESA mission: ESA is Good
Friends, Good Works and Good Times---We create
activities and support causes that let us surround
ourselves with welcoming, positive people who
enjoy making a difference and having fun together.
We must continue our efforts to support St. Jude Children’s Hospital
because St. Jude continues with their mission: “to advance cures, and
means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through
research and treatment”. Approximately 75% of the funds necessary to
operate St. Jude must be raised from donors.
Please, Please, Please complete booked event forms for each event you
hold for St. Jude! Please contact me if I can be of assistance to you in
completing these forms. We want ESA Illinois to get credit for every dollar we
collect for St. Jude.
Did you know…

…If you log onto St. Jude.org then search “St.
Inspire” you will find many inspiring stories. From
the St. Jude website: “St. Jude Inspire was created
to do justice to the stories that unfold every day in
and around the special mission Danny Thomas
ignited decades ago to end childhood cancer and
other life-threatening diseases”.

… That there is a bust of Danny Thomas
located in the hospital. It is a tradition at the
hospital to rub his nose for good luck.

Chapter Four
Regional News

On July 20, 1985, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, while attending the Epsilon Sigma
Alpha (ESA) International Convention, several Mid-western members met to
finalize plans for what had been a desire of many for some time. In a small
room in Tulsa, the Midwest Area Regional Council was born. MARC, as it
would come to be known, was made up of members from nine state councils:
Great Lakes, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and
Wisconsin. Another meeting was held on April 5, 1986 in Lansing, Illinois to
enable representatives from each state to meet and draft by-laws. At this
meeting it was decided that an annual conference would be held on the second
week-end of November.

The objectives of MARC are:
• Promote closer relationships and fuller cooperation among the
member states
• Assist member states in reaching new goals and new heights in the
growth and strengthening of ESA in the Midwest
• Serve as a means of promoting fellowship and unity
• Offer a means of sharing mutual problems, concerns and goals
• Providing further educational and leadership training for ESA
members in the Midwest.

MARC has changed over the years.  Our annual Leadership and Conference
is now held the second week-end in October each year.  The Great Lakes &
Michigan were combined to be one--the state of Michigan.  Throughout the
years, we have expanded our membership by including the states of South
Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma making MARC a twelve state
council.

Greetings from your Alpha Upsilon Sisters! Since the last edition, we finished
our "Socks For Soldiers" Collection for the Hope For Heroes program with 900
pairs of socks! Thanks to all who helped in any way.

Another ongoing project we participate in is providing treats for the DDC
students for their Halloween Party in October. In December, for Christmas, we
provided goody bags with candy and an ornament for each student. Our
chapter also volunteers for the One Stop Community Christmas Event, working
to collect and distribute socks and underwear for the families involved.

It's not just work, but we also had fun at our annual Christmas Party.
The evening started with enjoying a shared meal. Then we had a Christmas
ornament exchange, drawing numbers for the un-named wrapped ornaments.
The highlight of the evening was our Secret Sister gift exchange with everyone
trying to guess who their Secret Sister was.

Happy New Year to all and looking forward to Spring!

Hello from Gamma Chi! It sure had been a busy Winter so far. The Gamma

We held our annual terrible or treat in the courthouse lawn and despite the
terrible weather we had lots of cute little visitors!
In November, we had a Thanksgiving pot luck at Lebanon church.  In
December,  we enjoyed a nice at the home of Rusti Grogan.   We also joined Xi

some holiday cheer.  We are looking forward to spring and or annual geranium

"Sisters function as safety nets in a chaotic world simply by being there
for each other." ~ Carol Saline

Omega Nu ladies have been a safety net for each other and the
community this past holiday season.

On November 11 we provided desserts for Veterans Day to the
American Legion and VFW in Mattoon. Something sweet for those who gave
so much for us! The sisters collected items for stockings that we gave to
Veterans in local nursing homes.

December is a special time for giving and spending time with friends
and family, as well as giving back to those in need. Omega Nu Sisters spent
Saturday, December 8 handing out cleaning products to families in need
during the One Stop Community Christmas held at Lake Land College in
Mattoon. We also served lunch and helped the Mattoon Police Department
during their Shop with a Cop on December 9. This was a great opportunity
to help those who protect us find clothes and toys for young children in need
to put under their tree. Thank you to all who helped with all our holiday
giving!

With the chaos of the holidays
behind us we are happy to bring in this
New Year as Omega Nu turns 20 on
February 28….We make 20 look
Twentifastic! To celebrate our birthday
we will be doing a St. Jude Radio-a-

March 1, call in to help raise some
funds! We will also be doing Plates for a
Purpose to benefit St. Jude on April 6.
Plates for a Purpose is a luncheon and

XI CHI

Fran Harris-Shaffer

Warm Winter greetings to all!! Xi Chi hopes that everyone had a wonderful
Holiday Season!

Xi Chi was very busy wrapping up 2018!! Besides welcoming our
newest Xi Chi member, April Pickett, several members of Xi Chi attended
Rho Chi’s (St Charles, MO) 38th Annual Luncheon Auction on Saturday,
November 10. This wonderful, well organized event benefits St Jude
Children’s Research Hospital. Everyone had a great time and we would like
to send a special Thank You to the Rho Chi members for inviting us!! Then
on Veteran’s Day, we participated in O’Fallon’s annual Veterans Day
Parade.

Our annual Christmas Party was held at Lotawata Creek Southern
Grill this year. Instead of exchanging gifts, we decided to pool our monies
and donate our gift buying funds (plus more!!!) to the ESA Foundation.
What a wonderful way for our funds to be spent!! On Saturday, December
15, Chip Shaffer, Fran Harris-Shaffer, Di Scott, Kim Haverkamp and our
State President, Kathleen, along with members from Gamma Chi in
Fairfield made a trip to the Marion VA Hospital and delivered Christmas
stockings, blankets and extra goodies to the resident Veterans. It’s always
a humbling experience visiting with our elderly Veterans and that day was
no exception!

And let's not forget the kids!! Once again, Xi Chi donated toys,
books, clothing and school supplies to Caritas Family Solutions Secret
Santa program to provide a nice Christmas for the Foster Children in our
local area.

On January 31 we will be holding a Bake Sale to benefit Easter Seals
and to also advertise our St Jude Bowl-A-Thon which is on Saturday,
February 16 and what a better place to hold both of these events than at
our local bowling alley, St Clair Bowl!! If you haven’t reserved or purchased
your ticket for the Bowl-A-Thon, yet, please contact Fran Harris-Shaffer to
do so!!

For more events, pictures and fun, please check out our photos on
our Xi-Chi Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/XiChi5456. This will
keep you up to date on all of our latest Chapter happenings!!

Until the next time, please stay Healthy, Happy and WARM.

Happy Valentine’s Day to all of our ESA family.

Dave Erickson, husband of Mary Edna Erickson has passed away It is
with the heaviest of heart that I share with you that my dad has passed on
Sunday, Jan. 13th. He wanted me to share this with you-

Dave was born and raised in western MN, he majored in accounting &
business administration at the MN School of Business. He served four years
in the USAF based in upstate NY, MS, Iceland, FL and ending up at Andrews
AFB outside of DC. He then began his insurance career as an audit trainee
with The Harford in their Chicago office. He worked his way up to the
manager of the department. Then he was promoted to San Francisco as
director of the audit department's west coast offices. From there he was
named assistant general manager of Hartford's Southern CA Regional Office
and followed that with several years in the agency side of the business.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Edna, daughters Mary Pickrell and
Teresa Battiston, grandsons Ryan and Eric Battiston and a great grandchild
Alexis Battiston. He's also survived by one time foster son David Marcus, his
wife Lana and their daughters Rachel and Jodi all who have remained in
contact with the family.

Pray for our family during this time as my mother has lost her soul
mate of over 60 years of marriage.

. Cards may be sent to: 1116 S. Astell Ave, West Covina, CA.
91790-5301 Email to Mary Edna: [email protected] Mary Edna asks that
in lieu of flowers please make a donation to St. Jude Children's research
hospital. Please send the donations to ESA headquarters saying that it is for
St. Jude in David's Honor.

With His Grace,
Teresa Battiston
