Chapter Chatter 18-20

Hello, my ESA family and happy summer! I hope
everyone is finding a way to enjoy their time and safely
get together with those that mean the most to you. I
know my summer has been looking very different with
no traveling, but I have been taking the opportunity to
read more, do some projects around the house, and put
some puzzles together with my Mom.
Another way the world has adapted to the current times
is by bringing more of our world online to continue to
be together and get things accomplished. ESA
Headquarters and the International Council did an
absolutely fabulous job of doing that with our IC
Convention this year.

We had wonderful presentations, workshops, and socializing throughout the weekend.
Illinois hit the cumulative total of $9 million donated to St. Jude, which is an awesome
accomplishment! Our total donations for the year were $637,758 and the grand total for
all of ESA this year was $22,082,886!! So amazing to think of all the lives we have
changed with our work. IL also won many other awards, so keep an eye on your email
from IC with links to the presentations if you didn't get to watch them live.
A few things to take note of that were shared at IC Convention:
-Charlotte's membership challenge has been extended to November 1st. As a reminder,
the state that has the largest growth in community membership will be able to invite
Charlotte to an event in the state. So keep that in mind as you chat people up about
joining ESA!
-Leadership will be held in Denver February 25-27, 2021. This is a great opportunity to
gain skills that can be used not only in your growth in ESA but in your personal and
professional lives as well. So keep an eye out for the registration on this one. It's not to
be missed!
-The Young Leaders Elite Retreat is being scheduled for September 2021. If you have
any young members in your chapter looking for an opportunity to learn and grow, this
is the event for them. Since it is still a little ways out, they are still working on details,
but that doesn't mean we can't start talking it up to folks we think might be interested.
As for the goings-on in IL, your convention committee and ISC board had a meeting on
August 6th. At that meeting, it was decided, based on the data from the survey filled out
by members, that our best course of action was to cancel our in-person convention/fall
meeting and make it a virtual event. So mark your calendars for the afternoon of
Saturday, September 12th. More information will follow as we plan. Another decision
that was made by the ISC board at that meeting pertained to filling the President-Elect
role. It was decided to rescind a bylaw that then allowed me to appoint Misty Douglas
as our President-Elect. Once that was done, Tricia Bayles was asked and accepted the
appointment to the role of Recording Secretary that was left open by Misty's move. As I
said in my email explaining all the details of this, we did not take any of these decisions
lightly and were only thinking about the best way to keep IL ESA moving forward. If
you have not been receiving emails from me, please reach out and let me know so I can
be sure I have your correct address and have you on my email list.
Please let me know if and when your chapters begin to host events or have chapter
meetings and you feel comfortable inviting me. I would like to try and visit as many
chapters as I can, though I know that may be difficult under the circumstances. I love to
travel and visit new places so I will be happy to come where I can when I can. Even if
you do something virtual, send me an invite!
Out of great change, comes great growth. Though many things in the world are
uncertain, one thing I know for certain is that ESA will come out on the other side of
this a stronger and better organization. I love being a part of the growth and change and
can't wait to see how IL ESA members contribute to it all. Have a wonderful rest of your
summer and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in September!

Treasurer's Report

Wow, what new challenges we have faced this year, adjusting to our new temporary
lifestyle. I have gone from being retired and being at home during the day, to having to
stay at home all day. Well, I am getting some things gone through and Loki (our
adopted cat child) has been very helpful. Yes, I use the 'temporary' because I do believe
we will have a COVID-19 free future. We are facing new challenges in our daily
routines, with schools, sports, organizations, and life in general. We will be reaching
deep into ourselves to find new ways to stay connected with family and friends during
this time. Hopefully, a vaccine is not far off and we can eradicate this virus and come
out of this stronger and more compassionate.
We have a new Illinois State Council President and new board members that are ready
for these challenges. As your treasurer I have a few things that need to be done here at
the beginning of the year:

Parliamentarian Report

I hope everyone is staying safe and having a good summer in these unprecedented
times of uncertainty.
As we move into ESA via virtual meetings & gatherings, please reach out to me on any
parliamentary procedures or questions you may have. I am happy to help with Zoom
questions also. I will be working with the Executive Board on some proposed bylaws
to help us better align for unforeseen instances we are currently experiencing, more
details to follow.
Please be sure to check out the new Ops Manual on the Members Only section of our IL
website and advise of any proposed changes or updates.

Philanthropic Report

Hello Everyone!
Thanks to the events of the past few months, ESA is clearing paths for new ways to
reach goals and create new ideas. As they say "The show must go on" and I feel Illinois
ESA chapters are doing their best with the limited amount of resources available at this
time. With that being said, the Illinois ESA philanthropic hours and monies for 2019-
2020 are $6,934 ($7,649 in 2018-19) and total monies (cash, donated goods, and miles)
are $440,232.44 ($652,469.91 in 2018-19).
As we work this coming year to increase these totals, remember that as we work for
our causes that we are also to shine ESA's light onto the world so that we may grow
our organization and set examples of hard work, integrity, and leadership for future
generations of members.
Until next time, stay busy and healthy,

Kim Haverkamp

Disaster Fund

Simply put: WOW!!
Illinois has been very generous in their contributions to the IC Disaster Fund this past
year!! I will be sharing the individual Chapter amounts during our upcoming IL State
Convention. However, at this time I would like to acknowledge and thank the
following chapters for participating: Alpha Epsilon (EIU Collegiate), Alpha Upsilon
(Mattoon), Beta Eta (Fairfield), Beta Kappa (Rock Island), Beta Psi (Murphysboro),
Gamma Chi (Fairfield), our Illinois State Council, Omega Nu (Mattoon), and Xi Chi
(O'Fallon).

Kathleen Grissom

St Jude Director

Hello Illinois Sisters!
(Hope you could hear me through my mask!) In these topsy-turvy times many of you
have not been able to hold your traditional fundraisers for St Jude's. If you have come
up with some ideas on new projects that won't be affected by all the restrictions, please
share them on social media or email. Check out the "Make a Difference" section on the
IC website (epsilonsigmaalpha.org) for some ideas that might be modified. Don't forget
to register your project using the Booked Event and Completed Event forms from the
website. If there is anything I can do to help you, let me know.

Suzi Coffman

Campaign Chair

Congratulations to Celeste Webb, Omega Nu-Mattoon, on her election to IC
Parliamentarian; Kim Poling, Beta Kappa-Moline on her appointment as IC
Philanthropic Chair; and Jamie Atchison, Alpha Alpha-Bloomington, who will
continue on the IC Hotel Contracts Committee. We wish them all the best as they
Embrace the Journey with ESA!
We are excited to support two IL members who are running for Midwest Area
Regional Council (MARC) elected office: Kim Poling, Beta Kappa-Moline, for Vice
President and Jill Shull, Omega Nu-Mattoon, for Treasurer. Also, the in-person
conference in Evansville, IN has been cancelled and will be held virtually in October,
more details to follow.

MARC Report

Hello once again! I was able to participate in the MARC Zoom meeting held on August 4th.
This meeting is normally held during our IC Convention. So much information was shared by
President Linda Schmidt, that just a few snippets will be shared here. Linda's theme is "Taking
Chances" and we are all currently "feeling like we are taking chances" during Covid-19. Linda
has called on all State Presidents and/or State Chaplains to send their state members' email
information to MARC Chaplain Denise Hagerty at [email protected]
Secretary Kim Poling was present with attendance taken. Bonnie Templeton, Treasurer,
shared the proposed budget. A major part of this discussion was the travel reimbursement for
our MARC officers. Bonnie also shared with the Audit Chair, Birdie Elkofska, that everything
(treasurers books, receipts, deposits) will be scanned and sent to Birdie and her committee.
Parliamentarian Rose Wagner reported there are around 40 pages of bylaw changes to
present. She will send them to each State President, who will share with their members prior
to the vote at the October conference. This information will also be shared in the reMARC
newsletter as there are a lot of basic housekeeping changes. Ways and Means Co-Chairs, Jill
Shull and Jill Richards, shared an upcoming project: "Mysterious and Remarkable Container".
This mystery box will have around $100 worth of donated items from the Executive Board.
Tickets are $10, checks may be made payable to MARC in c/o Jill Shull. The drawing is to be
held on October 11th. Stay tuned to the reMARC newsletter where more information will be
presented.

Collegiate Report

In these unprecedented times, where 'in-person' meetings/get-togethers have been replaced by
Zoom, and if you're old enough to remember a cartoon series called The Jetsons, welcome to life
as it has become! aka The Jetson's space age technology! It really is close to what we are currently
living.
With that being said, a lot of our collegiate events are being postponed to a safer time in the
future, going virtual, or sadly being cancelled. As soon as I hear of an event actually happening, I
will share with our ISC What's Happening calendar. Please keep all of our students in your
thoughts as they sift through school delays and uncertainty.
I am pleased to acknowledge the Charles Atchison Endowment winner for 2020-2021 is Katie
Zenisek of Montgomery. She was awarded $1,300.00. Congratulations and kudos to Katie!!
I would also like to acknowledge the $1,500.00 Foundation Second Chance Endowment winner,
Rajiv Kamanis of Skokie. Congratulations and kudos Rajiv!! As a reminder, the Billy Brockman
Scholarship was previously dissolved with the remaining monies transferred to the Charles
Atchison Endowment.

Hope for Heroes

Hello Illinois!
I have missed seeing all of you this summer. I attended the spring board meeting in
Bloomington last March and, due to the weather, it was a small crowd. Missing my ESA sisters
and brothers!
First, I would like to thank all of you for your support on my international journey. It will be
exciting and maybe a little different due to COVID. Installation was virtual and it was hard to
tell who was watching but it was a nice ceremony.
LeAnn Wray, newly installed International President, had stated at Leadership, that she will
focus on Veterans this year. Illinois is one of the biggest HFHs supporters! There are things
you can still do even with COVID restrictions! They include sending coupons. This program
has been going on for years and it is so easy! Omega Nu sends coupons monthly to an APO in
the unknown and last March we got a thank you card for our efforts. If you do not have a
base address, you can send to the address below. It just got a little easier as there is no
international mailing. These coupons not only go overseas but domestic too! They have
mailing instructions on their website if you need assistance.

Support Our Troops
PO Box 70

Terri Olson asked for support for a program close to her heart called "Home for Vets". ESA
Minnesota is very active with this group. The VA, the local Elks, and ESA Minnesota have
partnered to provide home needs for vets who are finally getting off the street and into their
own home. I will be checking into this to see if Illinois can assist in anything similar to this.
There was an educational at the virtual IC Convention and the program looks wonderful.
More info will follow.
Another idea is to contact your local nursing homes and see if you can bring hygiene or
activity supplies to the vets who live there. This is a very difficult time for folks in the nursing
homes as they cannot see their families, so it would be nice to provide them with a few
surprises.
School supplies for military children might also be helpful during these times. If you are close
to a base or know someone who needs a helping hand, reach out to them. Then reach out to
me so I can share the request.
I have reached out to Chip and Fran and Camp Hope is under lockdown due to COVID. I have
asked for a wish list from Chip. More to follow on that too.
Stay safe everyone, let me know if something is working for your chapter and I will share the
info.
ESA Hugs,
Celeste

Alpha Alpha

Since the pandemic started we have been in lock down, but we were able to help
out with the Bloomington and Peoria Radiothon as well as hosting the Spring
Board Meeting followed by the Trivia Night.
Thank you to all that were able to make it to the meeting and weather the crazy
snow storm that came that day and those that stuck around for a fun night of
trivia. Lots of brain power and laughs were had by all!

Brenda Hainlen

Alpha Upsilon

Like the rest of you, we spent a lot of time erasing our calendars as we ended the
year quite differently than we expected! Our Spring Awards banquet was

schedule for April. Erase that! We were finally able to celebrate in late June with a
picnic at Suzi Coffman's house hosted by the new officers: Paula Winchester,

President; Kathleen Grissom, Vice President; Suzi Coffman, Secretary; and Jane
Raciti, Treasurer. The Appointed Board was announced and Perfect Attendance

certificates were awarded to Lois Neff, Joyce Warner, Paula Winchester and
Kathy Brown. Lisa Hubbart was presented with her First Degree of Pallas Athene.

Our Traffic Stop for St Jude was scheduled for May. Erase that! It has been
rescheduled for September 25-26. Several AU members were looking forward to

ISC Convention in June. Erase that! Our annual Ways and Means project, selling
drinks at the Baglefest Breakfast, was set for July. Erase that! We've now put on
our thinking caps for another project. Our annual Back to School rummage sale

is still on the calendar for August 27-29 at the Cross County Mall and we're
keeping our fingers crossed! With the "sheltering in" we all had lots of time to

clean closets so we'll have lots of "treasures" at the sale! We have had a few
broken bones and illnesses and were very saddened by the passing of former
member, Joyce McCoy, but we are thankful that the COVID cloud seems to have

passed us by and, in true ESA fashion, we're looking at the silver lining that
seems to have brought everyone closer together even while we're apart.

Beta Mu

It feels like ages since we were able to meet in person. Our last in-person meeting was
February. We have kept in touch through social media and email in order to vote in our
new officers for 2020-2021. We met in August via Zoom and it was really nice to see
and talk to everyone. We are thinking about different virtual socials we can do via
Zoom to stay connected. We are still planning to sell pecans this fall as that can be done
via email and contactless/very little contact delivery.
We're looking forward to the ISC Convention/Fall Meeting coming up and the fact that
we can't gather in person will make the time when we can all the sweeter.
ESA Hugs,
Kristi Keck

Gamma Chi

Sorry to report that not much is happening with Gamma Chi except sweating, not from labor
on projects but from the hot weather. Most of our projects are with community affairs that
have already been canceled through September. GC did get to have the Easterseals project,
which is participating in the town-wide rummage sale on July 10th and 11th
Gamma Chi had no meeting in April and May but did have the June and July meetings. GC is
down to 11 members so we are almost legal for a gathering. That is the only plus to having a
small group.

Our problems are small in comparison to the young people not getting to have graduation or
any kind of summer sports, fall sports, etc. The only good thing that can come from having no

school for kids is those kids who hated school before may have learned to appreciate it. Or
not?

We must try and keep our spirits up and pray for a vaccine to stop this virus. It is easier said
than done. We in ESA will continue to give hope and help to those in need and our prayers are

never more needed than now. Hope to see you all in the fall. Please stay safe.

Omega Nu

Hello everyone!
I hope you are doing well in this time of coronavirus quarantine. Omega Nu has been busy
even with limited person to person exposure. We held a belated, scaled down
gathering/installation of new officers at our retiring President, Leann Polston's, Lake house.
Leann installed Misty Douglas as our new 2020-2021chapter President.
Since we weren't able to hold our annual Bingo at Baglefest fundraiser due to COVID-19,
Omega Nu sisters Misty Douglas, Dalena Hall, Kami McDonough and Celeste Webb painted the
St Jude logo on several sidewalks and driveways. The small logo was $10 and the larger one
was $15. They did most of their work in the beastly heat! Thanks ladies!
The year 2020 was to be our 10th year of the Mattoon to Peoria Run held in conjunction with
WMCI radio station. Rather than cancel altogether, a virtual run was held July 17-18. Over
$110,000.00 (and still counting) was raised for the kids of St Jude. So proud of all the runners
and volunteers who participated in this heat wave.
We were all saddened by the passing of our beloved sister, Joyce McCoy, on May 25th. Joyce
was a member of ESA for about 50 years. She was also a charter member of Omega Nu in 1999.
Congratulations to Celeste Webb for winning the IC Parliamentarian office. We are proud of
you!
