Illinois State Council

‘ly Yours

Summer 2018

Editor - Jill Shull - [email protected]

 Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA) International

is an extraordinary organization — an organization that is
truly defined by the hearts, loyalty, and dedication  of  our
members. An international leadership and service organization,
ESA is a place where members develop meaningful friendships,
find their passion for community service, and continue on the
path of lifelong learning. The Illinois State Council consists of 15
chapters throughout Illinois with the purpose of promoting
philanthropic and service endeavors, educational and leadership
development, friendship and fellowship, and to assist in the
growth of ESA.

All chapters through ESA volunteer and fund raise for St.
Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN and
Easterseals. The Illinois State Council  philanthropy is Camp
New Hope, nestled on the banks of Lake Mattoon in central
Illinois; the camp is a place where developmentally disabled
children and adults have been enjoying the myriad of
recreational programs and activities at the premiere facility since
1974.   Chapter members throughout the state work extensively
within their own communities providing helping hands and fund
raising  and awareness for many projects, such as, Community
Cancer Center, Human Society, Homeless Shelters, Soup
Kitchens, Veterans & Family Readiness programs, Wounded
Warriors, etc.

Through ESA, women and men of all ages, backgrounds,
and interests are united by the desire to make a difference in the
lives of others – as well as their own. Some join collegiate or
community chapters, others join as individual members. But all
leave a positive mark on their communities and the world
around them.

When you join ESA, you become a part of a large
network  – one that supports you, challenges you, and works
with you to help you become your best self. You’ll grow as a
person, becoming more confident and a better leader. You’ll be
introduced to new situations that expand your horizons and
increase your levels of knowledge and understanding. Perhaps
most importantly, you’ll have fun, make lasting memories, and
form deep bonds with fellow members, as you work together to
accomplish good things on a local, state,  national, and
international level.

Happy Summer, Everyone! Before I
continue, I want to THANK each and every one of
you for your Support, your Kindness and for your
Encouragement during our June Convention and
with my Installation. As it has been said before,
“It takes a village," well, please know that our
Illinois members are one heck of a village!!

The Minutes from our 70th Annual Convention will be published in
this newsletter. Please take the time to read what YOU have done this past
year! Our Illinois Chapters are amazing and we need to hear this from time
to time … so KUDOS to each of you, big or small – we DO it ALL.

THANK YOU, also to our Beta Mu members, Charleston and Delta Xi
members, Neoga for bringing us “Once Upon a Time, Epsilon Sigma Alpha
…. ESA Our Story.” From the decorations, the stories and history of ESA,
to the new friendships created, down to the ESA ‘molded’ books
(amazing)! ..This year’s Convention was fantastic in every way possible …
Thank You for memorable Convention.

I have just returned from the “Sunshine and Celebrations," 71st
Annual International Council Convention in very HOT Phoenix. Just to
touch a little on some interesting ‘info’: The “Jonquil” news magazine has
undergone a huge update … It is now called “Journey”. We are asked to
submit pictures by August 1 for the Fall issue and again by February 1 for
the Spring issue. These can be sent via JPG, PNG or PDF formats; please
include your name, location, chapter name and full names of the people in
the image (if less than 12 people shown). Submit to
www.epsilonsigmaalpha.org. The articles are still being centered on YOU,
the members. So, feel free to send something about what your Chapter has
done to ESA Headquarters.

The Celebration of Life was held on Saturday morning with IC Chaplain
Linda Schmidt presenting a beautiful tribute to all. Sadly, Illinois has lost
the following Sisters during 2017-2018:

1.Katherine “Kay” Baker – Beta Eta

2.Betty Galas – Gamma Chi

3.Norma Grisamore – MAL

4.Dianna Hooper – Alpha Upsilon

5.Georgia Isle – Beta Eta

The Workshops were plentiful …ranging from a Creative Card Design,
meet the Hotel Chef (minus any food or drink samples ☹ ), a Native American
flutist, to a “Who do you Think You are, Part 2,” followed by a ‘hands on’ Hope
for Heroes workshop.

We had an interesting and heartwarming St. Jude “Meet the Patient”
presentation. But, the most touching was meeting little Sophia and her
parents at the Easterseals workshop. Brothers and Sisters, “This” is why we
do what we do …For the Kids!

I do want to say Congratulations to Jill Shull for our IL ESA’ly Yours
Newsletter coming in Second in the Nation!!

There was so much more valuable information shared; that I honestly
cannot list all of it in my article. However, I will be sharing more IC
Convention highlights and the awards that ILLINOIS earned this past year at
our Fall Leadership and Board Meeting.

Jamie Atchison and Adrian Sperduto are in the process of updating our
website. There will be a new section of “Chapter Events”. These are YOUR
Chapters upcoming events which I would love to share with you. So, Chapter
Presidents please send me information of what is coming in your area – if I
know of it ahead of time – I WILL be there!!

In closing, I want to let you know that there will be a Planning Meeting
to be held on August 11 at the Mattoon Public Library. At this time, I would
appreciate your written input, whether you are an Executive Officer, an
Appointed Officer or our IL member – please send me what YOU want to see
our State accomplish this upcoming year. My email address is:
[email protected].

Thank you, once again, to ALL of YOU – our fantastic, gracious,
hardworking and St. Jude, Easterseals, Hope for Heroes and Camp New Hope
minded members!!

Till we meet again … continue to seek out members, you never know
where they may appear! Encourage them, Learn from them, Treat them with
respect and continue our Legacy of ESA.

Hello ladies and gentlemen, I hope you are
enjoying your summer. Mine is going by very
quickly, two weeks left and then we are back to
the school routine. I haven't written an article in
a long while so I hope it doesn't sound to corny.
As some of you know my theme for next year will
be "Step Up In ESA". I'm asking that each one of
you step up and out of your comfort zone and try
something new in ESA. Try a new office or a new project, try something
new in your meetings, just try something. If we want our Philanthropic
Organization to continue we have to do this. The same people can't
continue to keep it going without new people "stepping up" and committing
to our state and local offices. If I can do it, anyone can. I'm hoping to have
a membership challenge for the year by the Fall Leadership Board
meeting. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. I'm going to leave
each article with a motivational saying, so here goes.

Move out of your comfort zone. You can only grow if you are willing to
feel awkward and uncomfortable when you try something new. - Brian
Tracy See you in the fall.

2018 - 2019 ISC PAST PRESIDENT

Rhonda Rawlings

Summer Greetings!

Can you believe at that summer has gone
by so quickly and school will start in a few weeks?
With summertime come tornadoes, a natural disaster
that could affect us since we live in the Midwest. As
you know, the ESA Disaster Fund is the one fund that
we help ourselves and other members of ESA. On our
website, the guidelines are posted – they provide the
information as to what would qualify for someone to receive funds in the event of a
disaster. The maximum amount to receive is $5,000. Please consider having a
fund raiser for the Disaster Fund.

On to some fun stuff! I attended the ESA International Convention in
Phoenix this year. It was great to see old friends to catch up as well as meet new
members. I’m proud to say that Illinois did well at the Awards Luncheon where
our own Maria Bingheim was the MC. The awards are listed in this publication of
the ESA’ly Yours; however, a special call out to two members – Jill Shull, Editor of
the ESA’ly Yours received second place in the five edition category and Laura Bein
cleaned house with her single event for raising funds for St. Jude’s Children’s
Research Hospital. Great job ladies!

2018 - 2019 ISC CHAPLAIN

Paula Winchester
[email protected]

Welcome to summer and another new
year. I’ve just returned from Phoenix and another
IC Convention.

To say that Phoenix was a little warm is
an understatement! It was over 100 degrees the
whole week we were there. But it was a great
convention in spite of the heat. Got to visit with our sisters from all over the
country.

Speaking of conventions, I would like to send out a big thank you to
our Beta Mu and Delta Xi chapters for hosting our own ISC Convention. I’m
sure all those who attended had a great time. Congratulations to our now
past President Rhonda and her board for a very successful year. Also to our
new President Kathleen and her board. I wish them a good and successful
year ahead.

This year I have the pleasure to serve as the ISC Chaplain. I look
forward to hearing from our Illinois sisters about what’s happening in their
lives, the good or unfortunately the not so good. If you have an event in your
life, please let me know so I can send you cards from your Illinois sisters.
You may send them to me by e-mail at [email protected] or my cell
phone, 217/259-9274. My mailing address is 1917 Evergreen Ct., Mattoon,
IL. 61938.

So far this year I have sent cards to Vicki King, Fairfield, to welcome
her new granddaughter, to Adrian Sperduto for the death of her Grandfather
and to Leann Polston, Omega Nu for being hospitalized, and to Joyce
McCoy, Omega Nu for a fall.

Again, please let me know if you need a card sent to one of our sisters,
please include some information about the reason for the card and an
address for the person it needs to be sent too.

Hope to see everyone at the MARC Conference in Sioux Falls.

2018 - 2019 ISC ESA for ST JUDE COORDINATOR

Kim Haverkamp
[email protected]
I want to start by saying Congratulations
and Thank You to you, ESA Illinois members! Last
year (2017-18) ESA Illinois contributed
$1,492,295.66 to St. Jude Children’s Research
Hospital. It truly took teamwork and many hours. I
am sure there were lots of laughs and fun included
too! At this time I want to challenge ESA Illinois to
surpass the amount contributed this past year-no
limit. WE CAN DO IT!

I look forward to seeing some great ESA for St. Jude events this year.
Please be sure to complete the booked and completed event forms for each St.
Jude event you hold. The forms are located at www.epsilonsignaalpha.org/
member-center/chapter-management/st-jude. You can also check out the
Coordinator page for a welcome video and resources that will help you
promote your events at epsilonsigmaalpha.org/StJudeCoordinator. Please
email me 1 or 2 pictures taken during your St. Jude event(s) so they can be
included in the St. Jude presentation during ESA Illinois State Convention in
2019.

Now is the time to register for participation in the St. Jude Memphis
Marathon Weekend at stjude.org. Race day is December 1, 2018. Also other
St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer opportunities include: Chicago,
IL (Sept. 8), Peoria, IL, St. Louis, MO (Sept. 22), & Normal, IL (Sept. 29).

I also encourage you to visit stjude.org for the latest research findings.
I especially would direct your attention to the article posted by Karina Perez-
Ortiz on April 12, 2018, titled “Creating beauty during an ugly fight”. The
hospital’s Child Life Program hosts annual St. Jude Teen Art Shows. “It’s a
collection of artwork by teen patients who have poured their thoughts and
emotions onto canvas”. Karina is a teen and a patient at St. Jude. She says,
“Each year when I hear it’s coming up, I get excited. It’s important to have
little things to be happy about and look forward to while going through
treatment. Creating art has helped me express my feelings. I’ve also learned

how to look on the bright side of things as I go through
this long, difficult journey.” I have seen
this wall, in the hospital, covered with
art and it is so amazing to see such
incredible expressions of emotions.

Here’s to a fantastic year and remember
“Anyone who thinks that they are too
small to make a difference has never tried
to fall asleep with a mosquito in the room” -
Christine Todd Whitman.

2018 - 2019 ISC FOUNDATION DIRECTOR

Jamie Atchison
[email protected]
The ESA Foundation is a nonprofit/tax-exempt
organization pledged to develop philanthropic activities
of volunteers, provide assistance to established
programs that serve human needs, and produce new
programs to improve the quality of life. The Internal
Revenue Service has ruled that the ESA Foundation is
exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c) 3
of the Internal Revenue code as an organization
operating exclusively for charitable and educational purposes.

The ESA Foundation was established as the ESA World Center
Foundation in 1970 by the members of    Epsilon Sigma Alpha  International
(currently known as ESA). There are so many ways to help the foundation
grow:

1-The easiest way is to use the Turn Around for your donations, write
one check from your chapter (excludes ALSAC sponsored events) to the ESA
Foundation, fill out the contribution form, providing a list of benefactors
including their EIN numbers and the foundation will mail you back the
individual checks (except for St. Jude) and you will mail them on to the
benefactors. This helps the foundation maintain and keep their 501c3 federal
tax exempt status. Find out more at https://www.epsilonsigmaalpha.org/
about/ESA-Foundation/contribute/turn-around-fund

2-Donate or Start and Endowment, the cost of education is rising to all
time highs, help students achieve their dreams by contributing to an existing
endowment or starting one of your own. Find our more at https://
www.epsilonsigmaalpha.org/about/ESA-Foundation/endowments

3-Fund the Grants program by becoming  a Life Active member, either
you or your chapter may become a Life Active Member of the ESA Foundation
by paying two installments of $250 between now and May 31, 2019.  Many
grants are available to help people advance in their careers. Find out more at
https://www.epsilonsigmaalpha.org/scholarships-and-grants/

Thanks for all those contributing to the endowments this year, the
recipients are:

Billy Brockmann - $1300 awarded to Gabriella Newton - Washington, IL
Charles B. Atchison - $500 awarded to Thao Pham - Rock Island, IL
IL State - $500 awarded to Olufunmilayo Ashiru - Chicago, IL
Second Chance - $1500 awarded to Olufunmilayo Ashiru - Chicago, IL

Please help me reach my goal this year of getting 3 Life Active Members
(individual or chapters) from Illinois this year!!! Also, if you are a Life Active
Member, I will be reaching out to you to help assist spread the word about
the ESA Foundation and all the great benefits that it has to offer!

2018 - 2019 ISC CAMPAIGN FUND DIRECTOR

Jamie Atchison

is $1000, we are getting closer and we will have a raffle at
the fall meeting.
Due to work constraints, Maria Bingheim withdrew her name from the IC
Ballot, she will be serving at the 2018-19 IC Chaplain, she will do a terrific job
and we wish  her all the best!!!  Rhonda Rawlings will be running for
MARC Parliamentarian in October at the annual conference, we wish her all the
best!!!
If anyone else is interested in running for an IC office, nominations
form  are due November 15th and you should have your chapter  and state

JONQUIL

NEW NAME NEW LOOK

JOURNEY

2017- 2018 IC ESA for ST JUDE SENIOR

Celeste Webb
[email protected]

As my time on the International appointed board as
the St. Jude Sr. chair ends, I would like to thank all of
you for your advice, encouragement and support.
Illinois did amazing things the last two years! We have
reached new heights thanks to all of your hard work!
I am blessed to be part of this amazing state council.

As you have heard by now, Illinois was 5th in donations raising
$1,592,537! WOW! I was so excited as it was announced! Lot of hard work
went into that total from many of you.

Please do not stop working for the kids. There are allot of
opportunities coming up in the near future for all of us. Right around the
corner is the Walk to End Childhood Cancer. Illinois is blessed to host
THREE walks! There are walks in Normal (September 29), Peoria (Sept. 22)
and Chicago (Sept. 8). They are on different days this year so you have the
opportunity to pick a walk to help at or to walk! If you can’t travel you can
always have a virtual walk. The instructions are on the ESA International
Website on how to start or join a virtual team. You don’t have to leave the
comfort of your own home to be a part of this event. ESA has pledged to be
a gold sponsor this year so we must raise $100,000.00! We need everyone to
help.

At the IC Convention in Phoenix, ALSAC announced the opportunity
for smaller cities and towns to host their own walk. If you remember, in
2008 when the Give Thanks Walk started Omega Nu hosted a walk at our
mall. We raised a few thousand dollars but our walk was eliminated two
years later as we were not a huge money maker. ALSAC has looked into the
inquiries to add walks in smaller cities and has agreed to allow these
fundraisers. I am hoping Omega Nu and many of you will look into this
possibility. The information will be added to the website soon.

Last year, I attended my first Memphis Marathon. It was inspiring but
I was the only Illinois member there. In the past, Jamie, Vickie King, Peggy
Best and others have attended. Please consider joining this event. There are
many volunteer opportunities available. I have a room reserved and will add
more if you’d like to join me. Race day is December 1 so I hope to see you
there.

Again, thanks for all you do. It was a great experience and I appreciate
all of your support. Hugs

Best Practices Tips for Branding ESA through Event Publicity

• Use “Presented by Epsilon Sigma Alpha” and the ESA circles logo at the
TOP of the page, post, or flier. If you include your chapter name
anywhere, it should be much smaller and appear as a subtitle like,
“Sponsored by Beta Kappa chapter/Tampa and Delta Sigma chapter/
Tarpon Springs”. Our goal is to help Epsilon Sigma Alpha ESA become
a household name, and our success depends upon promoting ONE
name nationally, not the hundreds of local chapter names we have.
(Think like Coke and Rotary... promote the unified brand).

• When partnering with another organization, you may use their
recognizable logos and name too if that helps attract attention, just
make sure ESA gets top billing if it’s our event or equal billing if we are
co-sponsoring.

• Post the logo and name of the beneficiary of your good works
prominently (St. Jude, the MS Society, American Cancer Society,
Jackson County Food Bank , etc., all have recognizable logos that will
help).

• Add a call to action complete with the cause, “Join Us for Bunco and
Help Hungry Families in Jackson County”.

• Offer Sponsorship Opportunities right on your posts and fliers: “Your
family or business can join our sponsor team, contact

Our group is chugging along
with several personal challenges, but
we keep going. On Saturday, July
28th we had a wine tasting gathering
with thoughts towards a rush event…
several potential members showed up
(some new, some might reinstate), and
we had two wonderful guests, Jamie
Atchison and Jill Shull. We had a
wonderful time while the wine
consultant told us all about 8 different
wines… reds, whites, sparkling, dry,
sweet…. Munchies were available, as
well as chocolate (a must in MY book).
We learned and laughed, drank and
ate. When it was all over, some wine
was bought and opened bottles were
shared and sent home.

We have plans to help a local organization pack school supplies the
second week of August and then hand them out on August 11. We will also
be helping several organizations man their booths at the Apple N Pork

Festival the last weekend of September in
Clinton.

Our next social will be at Merlot and a
Masterpiece in Bloomington… date and picture
still to be chosen.

Well, what a time at IC seeing all my wonderful Illinois  ESA sisters.  Bet
you could hear my daughter and I yell when Illinois received those awards.  I
have many many wonderful ESA times in Illinois.    I am proud you have
increased in membership.   Lurene and I have the same birthday of July 19th.
Tesa took us to dinner in the main dinning room.   Tesa noticed at other tables
was this colorful, salt taffy that really filled the air.  Yes, we had one and
consumed it.

Audit Report Vickie King, Audit Chair

Vickie King reported that the audit committee found no errors.

2018-2019 Proposed Budget Approval Leann Polston, Treasurer

added college dues from Bradley

deleting line 7-IC welcome party

webmaster is $0 since it was paid out of last year’s budget

leave disaster fund $500

Charles B Atchison $250

IL State Endowment $250

Young Leadership Convention $1500

Discussion took place as follows concerning paying for MARC reps to attend MARC convention:

Celeste Webb does not think that the board should pay for the MARC reps since it’s never been

done in the past and the people who have done it in the past have always understood

that they would have to pay for themselves to go to the conference.

Suzie Coffman thinks that having the money available will encourage more people to move up

and can then chose to use the funds or not

Dalena Hall feels if we add the MARC registration we may put ourselves into financial trouble

again and that it would not be fiscally responsible

Kathleen Grissom feels that using financial troubles as the reason is not viable since we funded

other projects that will go for 5 years and didn’t think about the financial issues then

70th ESA Illinois State Council Convention 5

Paula Winchester is the MARC rep this year and will be going either way if it is in the budget or

not. She was aware that it was a responsibility of the MARC rep to go.

Motion to add MARC registration was defeated

Motion to accepted the rest of the proposed budget for 2018-2019 was carried

IL has been asked to cohost with another state for the IC convention in 2021, IN has voted no, Kathleen had

heard KY talking about it but didn’t not make a decision, its lots of work and IC is dictating most of what

happens since they are financial responsible, Celeste asked where it might be-Chicago is too expensive

so it would most likely be in a large city with a good airport but not as large as Chicago. Maria feels that if

we want to work on focusing on IL and our own attendance, we can’t divide our work between IL and IC.

Show of hands said no to hosting IC convention in 2021.
