ESA'LY YOURS PRESIDENT - MISTY EVANS

As I type this, thoughts come flooding about
how fast 2022 has flown by....by the time
this Newsletter hits your inbox, we will
anxiously be awaiting Thanksgiving in just a
few days and then Christmas will be rapidly
approaching! Life sure has been busy and
there has been no slowing down!

It was wonderful seeing those that attending
our Fall Gathering in Bloomington! Thank
you to the ISC board for hosting and to
Jamie pulling things together!

I President's Report - Continued

What ideas did you take back to your chapter
about sparking new interest in the community for membership? How has Fall Recruitment gone for you?
Let us start by reaching out to members who have left due to outside commitment, young kids,
whatever it may be and invite them back! That one call may be all it takes to let them know we haven’t
forgotten about them and would love for them to come back!
I recently returned from my first MARC Conference – what a fun time in Tulsa! Oklahoma was very
welcoming and did a great job. Congrats to Kim Poling on a wonderful year as MARC President and to Jill
Shull on being elected Vice President! Don’t forget Illinois will be hosting the 2023 MARC Conference in
East Peoria next October and we will need all hands on deck to make this a spectacular event!
If there is anything different you would like to see in these newsletters, please let me or Rhonda know!
Thank you to all of my board members, appointed board and chapters for submitting articles. I hope
that these will be informative.
I can’t wait to see you all soon! Until then, keep up the good work and Keep Rockin’ Away in ESA!

President - Elect

Hello Illinois!

Isn't it a beautiful time of year? Everything pumpkin spice, soups and comfort foods, the leaves are changing,
temperatures are cooperating, and breaking out the sweaters to start fall off right! I've always said I want a fall with
more than a few pleasant days instead of moving from hot directly into cold! I think we've had some really pleasant days
for a while, making it a beautiful time of year!

Illinois State Fall Gathering "ESA Groovin' into Fall" was a great day thanks to the ISC board, Jamie Atchison, and all
those who attended! It was so good to see everyone from all over the state(and Iowa!) Check out other chapter events
happening near you! Good food, Good Friends, Good works, Good times, and good learning!

Recruitment and banquets have come to an end for most of us. Hopefully everyone took advantage of some of the
recruitment resources from ESA online at the website and on Facebook like 'Food With Friends,' there are so many great
ideas!! My beloved Omega Nu chapter had a "We Can Do It, in ESA" themed recruitment and had 5 pledges at our
banquet! We're so excited to add to our organization! We also had impressive years of service awards given out; 5, 10,
15, 25, 30, and 50 years of service were celebrated, congratulations to all our members! You can't earn accolades like
that if you don't ask people to join! Just because recruitment season has come to a close doesn't mean you can't
continue to ask those around you to join ESA, keep sharing our good works!

Normally at this time I would be asking for you to be thinking of ISC executive board nominations but since we're on 2
year terms, and this is our first year, it isn't time to do that! But you can be thinking about getting involved or who
would be a great addition to the board for next year.

The holidays will be fast approaching, I wish you all a Thanksgiving full of blessings and a very Merry Christmas full of
family and friends!

Past President
Report

Happy Fall Everyone! This is by far my favorite season and I am enjoying the cooler weather fun fall events going on. I
hope you are too. In my role as our Past President, my job is to promote the Disaster Fund to our state members as well
as be a resource for folks with questions. Remember that Disaster Fund is a fund for US. This is our way of helping fellow
ESA members out in times of crisis or need. I anticipate getting more information at IC, so until then I leave you will this

Collegiate Report

“We didn’t realize we were making memories we just knew we were having fun.” –Anonymous
For anyone who knows me well, it will come as no surprise that I had a great time in college. Met lifelong friends,
participated in some great organizations and oh yeah, learned a little bit too. As a member of Alpha Beta at Illinois State
University, I was able to meet people that like me, enjoyed helping others. I am very excited to once again serve as the
collegiate chair for the state of Illinois. I am looking forward to engaging with all our collegiates and learning new things
from them as well as sharing our love of service with them as well. If you are a collegiate member and are reading this, hit
me up so I can start getting to know some of you and arranging some great things this year!

ISC Fall Gathering -
Minutes

ISC Fall Member Gathering – September 18, 2022

The ISC Fall Member Gathering was called to order by President Misty Evans at 10:30 A.M. Membership recited the
Opening Ritual and the Pledge of Allegiance.

President Misty read the opening thought provided by Chaplain Jo Grafton. Meeting chair Jamie Atchison welcomed
everyone to the meeting.

Silent roll call was taken by Recording Secretary Kim Poling from the registration sheet. Twenty members present, one
member present via Zoom.

Joy Reed made a motion to adopt the Rules of the Meeting as presented by Parliamentarian Celeste Webb. Motion was
seconded by Tricia Bayles, Beta Mu. Motion carried.

The minutes from the 2022 ISC State Convention were included in the Summer Issue of ESA’ly Yours that was emailed
August 27th . Dalena Hall, Omega Nu, made a motion to accept the minutes as published, Tricia Bayles seconded. Motion
carried.

Kathleen Grissom, Corresponding Secretary, reported that two thank you letters were received by past treasurer, Sharon
Nichols. One for a $500 donation and another for a $200 donation.

Jamie Atchison, treasurer presented the treasurer’s report (attached). Questions were asked about dues that still need to
be paid. The list of paid and unpaid dues are in the attached report.

Treasurer Jamie made a motion to spend $100 to take out a full page ad in the 2022 MARC Conference book to advertise
the ISC hosted 2023 MARC Conference as it is not in the budget. Celeste Webb, Omega Nu, seconded. Motion carried.
Kerry Considine, President Elect, gave the membership report. ISC has 76 collegiate members. ISU had 50 members at the
St. Jude Walk/Run on September 17, 2022. ISC currently has 12 chapters. Gamma Chi has plans disband December.
President Elect Kerry urged everyone to reach out and do fall recruitment. The ESA IC website has many resources. Also
encouraged everyone to join the ESA Membership page on Facebook. October is calendar challenge month for
recruitment, with a new challenge each week.

Kerry also said social media is a great way to connect, and she hopes each chapter has a Facebook page. People have
seen pictures of events on Facebook and have reached out and become members. Also a good time to reach out again to
past members, friends and family. They may be in a new phase in their lives and have time and a desire to become a
part of something like ESA.

Adrian Sperduto, Past President, gave a disaster fund report. Requests now go directly to the IC Diaster Fund chair,
who is currently LeAnn Wray. More information can be found on the ESA IC Website under Chapter/Council Mgt.,

Celeste Webb, Parliamentarian, made a motion for the following standing rule addition:
“The Executive Board shall be authorized to have final approval for unbudgeted expenditures not to exceed $100
with a recommendation from the budget chair.”

The motion was seconded by Tricia Bayles, Beta Mu. There was some discussion about the amount being too high.
The point was made that the executive board has to approve the expenditure so it will not encourage excess
spending. Motion was voted on and approved with two opposed.

Jo Grafton, Chaplain, requested in her report (via Misty) that anyone needing personal contact, a card or an email
please send her an email at [email protected]. So far she has sent two sympathy cards, one to Robin Bussey’s
family and one to Sandi Anderson. Two thinking of you cards were sent. One to Tanya Schilling and one to
Mary Jo Day.

Kristi Keck, Educational Chair, asks that you please send your educational forms to her at [email protected].
Include your chapter name and ESA Educational in the subject line.

Jill Shull, Awards Chair, asked that you be sure to record all of your good deeds so that you receive your Pallas
Athene points and your chapter and your state receive credit. Adrian Sperduto, Collegiate Chair, said she would
start reaching out soon, now that the students have had a chance to settle in. Would like to get Eastern up and
running again. Celeste Webb, Omega Nu, has a contact there and will forward the information to Adrian.

Suzi Coffman, ESA for St. Jude Chair gave the following POCs to contact for further information:
IC ESA for St. Jude Coordinator, Heather Hoey
Junior IC ESA for St. Jude Coordinator, Anthe Tyndell
Email: [email protected]

Illinois has met and exceeded the $50 for 50 Challenge. Keep up the good work! Contact Suzi if you would like to
know your chapter total. It is only updated at the end of each month.

Several checks were lost in the mail between Headquarters and St. Jude. Owners of the lost checks were notified and the
checks were reissued.
Dates to remember:

*Memphis Marathon, December 3, 2022
*$50 for 50 Challenge ends December 31, 2022
*Virtual $50 for 50 Celebration, January 19, 2023 (more information to follow)

The Normal Walk/Run total is currently at $185,381.41 and still climbing. 34 members joined Team ESA IL and raised
$3,150. Let’s push to get more members to join our team next year, whether in person or virtually!

Rhonda Rawlings, ESA’ly Yours editor, reminded everyone that the next deadline is
October 25. Tricia Bayles, Beta Mu, requested that the newsletter be sent out in an
additional format. President Misty will request a PDF format as well. Adrian Sperduto,
Xi Chi, asked for clarification on the email address to send articles to. President Misty
will confirm with Rhonda.

Maria Bingheim, Foundation Chair’s report was presented by President Misty. The scholarship application process is
now open. Please encourage anyone you know who is attending college to apply. All applications are done via the
Epsilon Sigma Alpha website https://www.epsilonsigmaalpha.org/scholarships-and-grants/.
The software will walk the applicant through the process and will allow them to narrow down which scholarships that
they are eligible to apply for. The applicant may apply for more than one scholarship but there is a $5 processing fee
for the application. These scholarships are not limited to incoming freshman unlike so many others. Last year
there were 38 scholarships that had no applications—this is a huge loss for the students. The number of applicants from
Illinois was down last year to 96 while the previous year had 173 applicants. Iowa applications were also down last year
to 33 from 37. Encouraging students to apply for the scholarships is also a great outreach tool to talk about ESA. So,
reach out to any and all students that you know and talk about the scholarship program. Also, if you have a connection
at the local high school, community college or a 4-year college, please reach out to them and give them some
information or send me their contact information and I can send them the information. While it is my
job to promote the ESA Foundation and its programs, I cannot do that alone. I need the assistance of each and every
one of you.

President Misty let everyone know that Historian Rhonda Rawlings is desperately seeking photos or documents
reflecting you or your chapter’s events for Misty’s scrapbook.

ISC Fall Gathering
Minutes - Continued

Registration postmarked prior to October 1 is $175, at the door is $200 (cash or money order only). The Marriott
Tulsa Southern Hills room block closes September 24. Code is ESAMARC.

Adrian Sperduto, Xi Chi, has some books to donate for the Books and Beverages Cork Pull. Lacey Mullins, Omega Nu,
is also donating some Us Born books. Jamie Atchison, Alpha Alpha, has a Coach purse with a wristlet and a dust cover
for the purse auction. She also has $100 to put in the purse. Please send your purse auction gift cards or cash to
Jamie. Make sure you designate it is for the purse auction.

Jamie Atchison, MARC 2023 co-chair reported she is trying to get some lighter hearted speakers for leadership.
Possibly polka lessons, pretzel making. Also some information on mobility; i.e. chair yoga. There is also a Gold Star
family in Peoria that may agree to speak. MARC mid-year meeting is tentatively set for March 10, 2023.
MARC Conference 2023 will be held October 13-14, 2023 at the Embassy Suites in East Peoria.

Social Media/Web Site, Jamie has made some updates to the website. Added more photos. If you see a them that you
like, let Jamie know. She is determined to get the ISC Web site back into first place at next year’s IC Convention.

Judy Huntley, Campaign Fund Chair, brought a beautiful fall basket to be raffled for the campaign fund. This fund is
a means to support our ISC members running for or holding offices at the MARC and IC level. The funding paid for a
full page ad in the MARC Conference book to support Celeste, Jill and Kim. Let Judy know if anyone currently in
higher office needs help with anything.

President Misty still needs an audit chair.

Unfinished Business:
Jamie Atchison thanked everyone for making Ooh La La, Passport to Paris a success. Made a profit of $688.20. A
detailed report was published in the Summer Issue of ESA’ly Yours.

New Business:
Celeste Webb discussed the problem of declining membership. She brought up an idea that she stole from Jamie
Atchison and passed on to the Membership Corporation. The idea she proposed is to pay the first year membership
dues for new members, collegiates that are graduating and moving on and new community members. After
making this proposal and not hearing anything back, Celeste asked for a status report and was told the workings of
the Membership Corporation are confidential and they could not tell her anything. After two failed attempts to meet
with alumni, one in Bloomington and one in Chicago, Celeste decided to present her proposal to the ISC
members.

ISC Fall Gathering
Minutes - Continued

Coletta Macaluso, Beta Kappa, mentioned lifetime members could donate a year of dues since they no longer pay
annual dues. Kathleen Grissom, Alpha Upsilon, suggested sponsors could also pay the first year dues. Joy Reed,
MAL, suggested the possibility of virtual chapters so the prospective members can see that community
membership is not as intense and time consuming as collegiate membership.

Celeste Webb, Omega Nu, made a motion that the ISC create a membership fund of $1000 to pay first year dues
for new collegiate and community members to assist in the recruitment of new members into the Illinois State
Council. Adrian Sperduto, Xi Chi, seconded the motion, none opposed. Motion carried.

Treasurer Jamie asked that anyone donating to the membership find please indicate this in the memo line of their
check. She also stated that she is working on setting up a Venmo account for the state treasury.

Future Meetings:
*MARC Conference 2023 Midyear Meeting – March 10-11, 2023 Embassy Suites, East Peoria, IL
*Spring Membership Meeting – March 25, 2023 hosted by Beta Mu, First Presbyterian Church, Charleston
I*C Convention – July 26-29, 2023 hosted by Texas State Council in Grapevine, TX
*Fall Membership Meeting – September 2023
*MARC Conference 2023 – October 13-14, 2023 hosted by Illinois State Council Embassy Suites, East Peoria

Other Upcoming Events:

*Monicals Pizza Community Day for Easter Seals – October 24, Charleston or Mattoon locations
*Omega Nu Witches Walk and Ball, October 29, Mattoon. See Omega Nu Facebook page for the flyer.

Hello from West Central Illinois—temperature is not bad but the wind is strong with a chance of rain. I
would gladly take the rain now rather than have it as snow later on.
Just a quick reminder that all contributions and dues payments need to be sent directly to ESA
Headquarters. They SHOULD NOT BE SENT TO THE ESA FOUNDATION COUNSELOR.
They can be paid on line on the ESA web site in the member suite
https://esa.users.membersuite.com/donations/donations-workflow or the form is on the ISC website or
I am attaching it to this article

Dues and email addresses
Email Addresses:
Please encourage those ESAF members in your state/region to be sure they have their current
email addresses and their current chapter/state/region officers in the ESA Member Center
database (MemberSuite).  This will ensure they receive ESAF communications and
newsletters.  This is an important way for us to stay connected with our membership and
ensures members will be able to vote in upcoming elections.

ESA Foundation Counselor
-Continued

ESAF Dues:

We feel membership is a simple way for people to feel a part of the important things the Foundation is doing.

In the last several years, we’ve asked the Foundation Counselors to encourage ESAF members to pay their dues early,
before the paper statements are mailed to those who have not yet paid their dues.  We continue to appreciate your
support here.  With the recently approved change in the dues cycle aligning with the calendar year, we will be
mailing the paper notices to our members in early November with email reminders sent in December.  We are hoping
with your help, we can minimize the number of paper letters that are mailed to the members, thus
reducing our postage costs, while being “green.”

Foundation dues are owed by December 31st (initial dues $25, and annual renewal dues of $15.)  After January 1,
the dues increase to $40 per year, with no difference between new members and renewing members.  We are
working with Headquarters to update the ESA Member Center with the change in dues and, therefore, we are unable
to process the $40 dues prior to January.  Please ask your members to refrain from paying 2023 dues until after
January 1st .

Additionally, since the dues are owed by year end and since Headquarters often receives a lot of dues questions the
week prior to the deadline, we are asking for your help in reminding your members if they want to pay by credit
card, to do so before December 21st , as Headquarters closes the office shortly before Christmas through the end of
the year.  If they wait too long, there will not be anyone in the office to assist with the process.

Scholarship application is open now. Please encourage any and all students that you know to
apply via the website https://epsilonsigmaalpha.org/scholarships)

Easterseals

Fall colors are in full bloom and the air has a cool crispness to it. Soon Thanksgiving and Christmas will
be upon us, will you be ready? I hope to be, but there are those last minute details that seem to pile up.

Has your chapter thought about how you will help Easterseals? I know we all look for different ways to
raise money. If each chapter president would email me how your chapter is or has fundraised for
Easterseals, I will compile a list of ideas and share it with all of the chapter presidents. Please send me
your list by December 15, 2022. My email address is [email protected]. Thank you for your help.

Hope to see you at the Spring Gathering on March 25, 2023. Have a wonderful and safe Holiday Season.

Best Regards,
Sharon

Alpha Upsilon -Kathleen Grissom
Alpha Upsilon was busy again. We may be small but we are mighty. The fall rush was held at the
Knights of Columbus hall. The theme was rock and roll. Games, food, music, and attire went along
with the theme. The fall banquet was held at Elevate. Once again the decorations were beautiful.
We also baked and delivered cookies to the firemen

Beta Mu - Sharon Nicholas
The members of Beta Mu have been busy this fall. Every month members personally help out a cause,
in Sept a small monetary donation was used to provide a bag containing some essentials for each of
the 14 residents at the Oak Manor, an assisted living facility in Oakland. (Photo 1) In October a
monetary donation was given to the homeless shelter in Charleston, Matthew 25. Our cause in
November will be for the Boy Scouts project ‘Scouting for Food’. Members will bring in non-perishable
food item which will be given to the Boy Scouts, who will distribute to area food pantries.

On October 16, the members hosted a Longaberger Basket Binga. Under the guidance of Debbie
Dunning, we were able to raise $1200 for St Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This was achieved
with the help of the 14 Beta Mu member, 43 participants, several sponsors and many door prize from
the area. Along with having a lot of fun, a special guest, Dane Perdieu, spoke for a few minutes about
being a St Jude kid and how it helped to save him and his family. He was also one of Basket Binga
winners. (Photo 2)

On October 24 we had a fundraiser with Monical’s in Charleston and Mattoon for Easterseals.

We also have 1 new member and April Pickett transferred to Beta Mu while she is going to school at
EIU.

Have wonderful Holidays filled with memories to last a life time.

Sharon

Omega Nu - Jo Grafton
Before starting the new year, Omega Nu was busy. We started with the St. Jude's Mattoon to
Peoria Run.
Such a good attendance to see the runners off!!! We had our yearly trip to the Little Theater,
after eating supper
at the new Mexican restaurant. Good food and good show!!

September brought our first business meeting with our new President. We look forward to
having Kerry
Considine lead us through this year, along with the rest of the board. Omega Nu were
sponsors for the American
Legion Women's Auxiliary's monthly Quarter Auction with a good attendance where we raised
a nice amount
to add to our Philanthropic monies. Next we headed to Bloomington for the St. Jude's
WALK/RUN. Followed by the Fall Event in Normal.

Omega Nu ended September with our Rush Social with prospective members in attendance.

Starting in October, Omega Nu helped with the Taste of Something Special which is an annual
fundraiser
for The Special Olympics. Following this, monthly business meeting and then our Fall Banquet
with 5 new
members being initiated. To end the month of October we will have our Witches Walk and
making plans
for upcoming fundraisers, along with community activities.

Have a Great Fall....Happy Thanksgiving!!

ESA IC Chaplain Report

“Remember your leaders…and…imitate their faith”

As you travel your journey, it can take a lot of strength at times to keep going – to keep
believing. One thing I have learned that has helped me tremendously to stay strong, faithful, and forward looking is a
lesson I learned long ago: make the faith of other’s a motivator. Look at your mentors and who inspires you. Mother
Teresa’s story helps me believe that maybe, just maybe, I can do half as much for humanity in my lifetime as she did
in hers.

“Lord, thank you for working through the lives of others. Help me draw strength and motivation
from them to keep moving forward.”

It is with both sadness and divine joy that we write to tell you all of our mother Marjorie’s
passing. She was welcomed by the Lord on Thursday November 17, 2022.
After her stroke in September of 2021, she was happy and well-cared for in an assisted living
facility. But in January of 2022, she began having some serious health issues and was enrolled in
hospice in February. Then, you know our mom, she rallied and has had a happy existence until
the last few weeks when her condition began declining and her passing became imminent. Even
so, she has remained comfortable and as determined as ever to complete her task. We were all
there, able to be with her as she neared the end and spent a very joyful and satisfying day before
she returned home to our Lord and our daddy.

Her memorial service will be held at Kansas Avenue United Methodist Church, 1029 NE Kansas
Avenue, Topeka, KS. on Saturday November 26, 2022, at 1 pm.
Her obituary is available at www.davidsonfuneral.com.

Memorials can be made to KS Ave United Methodist Church, PO Box 8184, Topeka, KS 66608- 0184 or Topeka Rescue
Mission, PO Box 8350, Topeka, KS 66608-0350.

Thank you all for your cards and prayers. She thoroughly enjoyed the cards, re-reading them
every so often, and she benefitted mightily from your prayers.
