Alpha Upsilon – Mattoon - Jan Raciti

Summer Greetings from your Alpha Upsilon sisters! May found us on the street corners collecting for St Jude Children's Re-
search Hospital at our annual Traffic Stop. In June our chapter hosted the Illinois State Convention. It was a delight to see many
friends there. We are now getting ready for Bagelfest in Mattoon and again will be selling beverages for the Bagelfest Breakfast.
August 9th & 10th found us at the Cross County Mall holding our annual Rummage Sale. We love the opportunity to clean out our
closets and help raise funds for our causes!

Gamma Chi Chapter 4289 – Dorothea Jenkins Ace Reporter on the Job

Well, what can I tell you that you want to hear? Mostly, that it has been raining on our parade for the first part of 2019. Farmers
in southern Illinois all have furrows on their brows instead of in their fields. That leaves us with the big questions: Where are we
going to get our corn-on-the-cob? What about the main food group item, cereal? If the price of it goes any higher, can we find
anything else to take its place or will we have to learn to cook again? Okay, these questions are not on your “need to know” list so
I’ll try something else.

Fairfield recently, June 29th as a matter of fact, celebrated its 200th birthday and G. C. helped with the celebration. Georgiana
Fletcher pitched a tent full of red, white and blue goodies for little pitchers who tried to put the bag of corn in the hole. Peggy
Best, Dorothea Jenkins, Joni Austin and Vickie King pitched in to help out. Since the game was free, there were lots of contest-
ants who walked away happy. Make that all contestants because, like all things in ESA, no matter how little talent you have at
first, ESA makes you shine in the end. In April, G.C.’s flower sale was rained out (naturally) and we ended up donating the rest of
the flowers to Kiddie Kollege as prizes for the Literary Fest. The June town-wide rummage sale, which is our Easter Fund project,
was called due to rain (imagine that!), so we are planning it for August. We’d really like it if all of you showed up to take home
some of the treasures. Please!

Speaking of June makes me think of convention. What fun! Take a bow, Alpha Upsilon. You do great work! The USA Tour was
excellent and we all learned new facts which is always good.
Hope to see you September 28 in Effingham at the Convention center for the Fall Workshop as we all “Step up in ESA”.

Lynda Edwards, IC Recording Secretary, shared the IC message on Ladders, Leaders, and Cheerleaders, this is a booklet to help to build strong-
er chapters. It includes ways of keeping members engaged and active and is available on website. Helping to keep new members engaged and
to understand what is being said and clarification of terms, ideas and acronyms builds understanding and a feeling of being a part of ESA’s valua-
ble mission. Some of the easy to follow ideas include follow up calls when missed meetings. Highly recommended the Ladder to Lead as a
method of encouraging members to do something. Lynda shared the idea that if you are not doing anything to correct the issue then managing
doesn’t matter. The ladder works by starting at top with a desired outcome. Fill in each rung with ideas of how to accomplish the idea. Getting
other businesses involved is a way to increase the power to change.

Maria Bingheim, Parliamentarian, moved to approve the Rules of Convention as printed in the program, the motion was seconded and carried.

Roll call was taken by Mary Stewart, ISC Recording Secretary.

der, reported that donations totaled $51,604.52 throughout the ESA footprint. Additionally, there have been ten claims totaling $38,127.41. None

Jamie Atchison, ESA Foundation Chair, reported the Foundation is doing amazing work, this year Illinois reached our goal of 3 new life active
members, since June 1, 2018, they are: Celeste Webb, Xi Chi, and Michelle Bingheim; these funds endow our grant program which we are al-
ways looking to expand and grow to benefit more people in our communities.
This year Jamie reached out to school superintendents around Illinois and spreading the word about the ESA Foundation and our scholarship
program. She also contacted community colleges in the area and am hoping that we reached the deadline for publishing our information to their
websites. The scholarship recipients were notified in May and they are:

Billy Brockmann Memorial Scholarship $1700 to Margaret Dimler of Peoria, IL
Charles B. Atchison $500 to Abigayle Orndoff of Pontiac, IL
IL Endowment $600 to Michelle Gates of Plainfield, IL
Second Chance $3000 to Priscilla Mwaura Chicago, IL

At the spring board meeting and shared in the ESA’ly Spring Issue, Jamie shared that today we are voting on consolidate the Illinois State Council
and Charles B. Atchison Jr. Endowments. Jamie Atchison, ESAF Counselor, moved to combine the Illinois State Council Endowment and Charles

Engagement

Increase state convention from 2018 by 5% to 55 IL members to attend in 2019, today we have 52, 8 of which are guests, so

member and continue to struggle to get pledges.

Leadership

Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA) is an extraordinary organization – an organization that is truly defined by the
hearts, loyalty, and dedication of our members. An international leadership and service organization, ESA is a
place where members develop meaningful friendships, find their passion for community service, and continue
on the path of lifelong learning. The Illinois State Council consists of 18 chapters throughout Illinois with the
purpose of promoting philanthropic and service endeavors, educational and leadership development, friend-
ship and fellowship, and to assist in the growth of ESA.
Through ESA, women and men of all ages, backgrounds, and interests are united by the desire to make a dif-
ference in the lives of others – as well as their own. Some join collegiate or community chapters, others join as
individual members. But all leave a positive mark on their communities and the world around them.
When you join ESA, you become a part of a large network – one that supports you, challenges you, and works
with you to help you become your best self. You’ll grow as a person, becoming more confident and a better
leader. You’ll be introduced to new situations that expand your horizons and increase your levels of knowledge
and understanding. Perhaps most importantly, you’ll have fun, make lasting memories, and form deep bonds
with fellow members, as you work together to accomplish good things on a local, state, national, and interna-
tional level. Find out more at www.epsilonsigmaalpha.org
