Foreword

So, here we are! Finally D-Day has arrived and you are about to enjoy the labours of our love for
the performing arts.
I have organized many productions inside and outside of school, but the big difference between
“The Pursuit of Happiness” and the others is the number of students involved in the preparation
for this show. The talent, grit, and determination I witnessed among these gifted young people
was mind-blowing. They helped with rehearsals, backstage, costumes, choreography,
documentation, and lighting. I am very proud of them.
Thanks as well to the School Management Team for its support in allowing me to proceed with
this event.
Tonight’s theme, “The Pursuit of Happiness,” is an ideal close to my heart. Most people think of
happiness as a result or an achievement, but I beg to differ. I see happiness as a choice: we
choose to be grateful for all that we have and choose to be graceful even in times of misfortune.
I hope our performance can nourish you and assist you in making your own choices. Choose to
be happy, and trust me, you will be!
Enjoy!

Sincerely,

Arum Handayani

ACT I

Scene 1: Be Our Guest

The show opens with jazzy hat girls and funky hip-hop dancers, followed by a parade of
characters from Alice and Peter Pan to Tarzan and the sea creatures who invite you to sit
back, relax, and be our guest!

“your happy ending may not be what you expected, but that is what makes it so
special.”

Drama Skit
All the villains (Maleficent, Queen of Hearts, Mother Gothel, Dr. Facilier, Cinderella's
Stepmother, Evil Queen and the Magic Mirror) come together and argue with one another,
boasting about how they were the best villains. Then the Evil Queen comes in and explains
that arguing is pointless. She then gives the villains new targets to defeat.

Scene 2: Worth It

Princesses Cinderella, Ariel, Snow White, Rapunzel and Mulan are gossiping about their
problems and their journey to find happiness. But no matter the hardships they face, they
know in the end that they are all worth it. Helping them out is their rap-loving Fairy
Godfather.

“we are all equally worth it.”

Drama Skit
Maleficent is working on a spell when Doctor Facilier comes in and convinces her to work
together to defeat their given targets.

Scene 3: Cinderella

“A Dream Is A Wish”
Cinderella gets ready for the ball with help from her Fairy Godmother and animal friends, the
mice and birds.

2

“Freakum Dress”
Cinderella dons her freakum dress and takes a break from her household chores, dancing the
night away with her girlfriends.

“Focus”
At the ball, Cinderella’s dancing catches the eye of Prince Charming, who is hoping to get a
girl. She accepts his offer to dance and the two head to the ballroom floor, where other
couples are dancing. However, Cindy ultimately rejects him as she only wanted to have fun
with her girls.

“Cinderella never asked for a prince. She asked for a night off and a dress.”

Drama Skit
The Evil Queen and the Magic Mirror talk about Peter Pan's strengths and plan to frame him
and tarnish his reputation.

Scene 4: Peter Pan

“Can’t Stop The Feeling”
Wendy and her siblings were having a normal day when Peter Pan and Tinkerbell fly into
their room. They take Wendy and her brothers and sisters to Neverland for a magical
adventure, meeting the Lost Boys.

“He’s A Pirate”
Upon their arrival in Neverland, however, they were thwarted by Captain Hook and his band
of pirates, who kidnapped Wendy and challenged them to a duel. After an intense battle, the
Lost Boys defeated the pirates and emerged victorious.

“Lucky Strike & Teriyaki Boys”
Peter Pan, Tinkerbell, Wendy, her siblings and the Lost Boys dance in glee at their victory
over the pirates.

“change is inevitable. growth is optional.”

Scene 5: Moana

Moana and Maui navigate the ocean, contemporary style, in search of the Heart of Te Fiti.

“Boyband”

Having just been dumped by their princesses, the princes are feeling down. They decided to
cheer themselves up by forming a boyband and dancing their sorrows away.

“Singing In The Rain”
Alas, Prince Charming decided to leave the boyband because of the pressure he was facing

from his fans by dating a commoner. He decides to take a walk in the rain to think, hoping
the shower will clear his mind. In the end, he chooses the girl and the boys are happy for him.

“when it rains on your parade, dance in it.”

Drama Skit
The Queen of Hearts and Mother Gothel argue about how to kill their given target (Mulan).

Scene 7: Reflection

Rapunzel and Mulan are feeling pressured by their family and society, and what everybody
expects them to do. They get together to talk and sing their frustrations out.

“let your light shine. live your dream.”

Scene 8: Alice In Wonderland

“Jump”

The White Rabbit is running around panicking because they are late for a meeting with the
Queen of Hearts.

“Wompa”
Alice sees the White Rabbit in distress and became curious. She chases him and falls down

the rabbit hole into Wonderland, meeting the Mad Hatter and the Cheshire Cat. Together, the
Wonderlandians give Alice a taste of their peculiar, mind-boggling homeland.

“Going Down For Real”
The Mad Hatter and Cheshire Cat take Alice to their tea party, which has been stuck at the

same time for as long as they remembered. Together, Alice sips tea with her new
Wonderlandian friends.

“DJ Turn It Up”
The Queen of Hearts has heard that Alice is in Wonderland, and is determined to find her and

chop off her head. However, Alice manages to evade the Queen despite the latter’s best
efforts.

“Jumpshot”

The Mad Hatter gives Alice a potion that can transport her to her own world, and Alice bids
farewell to her Wonderland and returns home.

“have i gone mad? ”
“i’m afraid so. you’re bonkers. but i’ll tell you a secret - all the best people are.”

4

Scene 9: Tarzan

“Planet of The Apes”
Tarzan roams around the jungle with his ape family. To his surprise, a group of city people
arrive in the jungle, amongst them the beautiful Jane Porter. Sparks fly between Jane and
Tarzan, much to the dislike of her fiance.

“Team”
As Jane grows more confused about which team she’s on - the city or the jungle, her fiance
challenges Tarzan to a duel.

“Light It Up”
Tarzan wins the duel and Jane chooses him over the city. The whole jungle, humans and apes
alike, celebrates.

“all good things are wild and free.”

Drama Skit
Mother Gothel and Cinderella’s stepmother are scheming, plotting ways on how to defeat
Ariel. After much arguing, they decide to lock her up in an aquarium and make her an
underwater display for their villain lair.

Scene 10: Ariel

“Shake Senora, La Da Dee, I Like To Move It”
Ariel and her underwater friends are having fun dancing in Atlantica. However, she swims to
the surface and spots people walking and dancing on land. She suddenly longs to have feet
and walk on land.

“Part Of Your World”
Ariel expresses her longing to be able to walk on land as the jellyfish try to console her.

“Unfortunate Souls”
Ariel goes to the sea witch Ursula to get legs, but when Ursula says that she had to take away
Ariel’s voice to give her legs, she is left uncertain.

“Under The Sea”
Ariel decides that she already has everything she needs and stays with her family and friends
in Atlantica.

“when you love what you have, you have everything you need.”

Drama Skit
All the villains come on stage and argue on why they weren't able to succeed in defeating

their second missions. Eventually, everyone realizes that good will always prevail. However,
the Evil Queen refuses to agree with them and finds a way to get her revenge.

Scene 11: Snow White

“Me Too”
The Evil Queen is admiring her beauty in front of her mirrors.

5

“Fancy”
Snow White is outside, singing. Unbeknownst to her, the Huntsman is close by, watching her.
He then comes up to her and tries awkwardly to flirt, although Snow doesn’t quite know what
to make of him.
“Runaway Baby”
After the Evil Queen orders the Huntsman to kill Snow White, she runs into the woods while
he races to catch her. Despite Snow's best efforts, the Huntsman manages to capture her in the
end, but she is saved by the dwarves.
“Doctor Feelgood”
Exhausted from running, Snow comes across the seven dwarves, playing basketball and
freestyling. They offer her their help. The dwarves are ecstatic to have a new friend and they
celebrate by freestyling.
“Dungeon Dragons”
Furious at the Huntsman’s failure, the Queen transforms into an old ghetto hag and brings her
posse and a poisoned apple to catch Snow herself.
“Whistle While You Twerk”
Snow falls for the Queen's trick and collapses after biting into the poisoned apple. The
dwarves think they know how to wake her, but a surprising twist is about to rewrite the whole
narrative.

“at times when we are lost, that is when we find our truest friends. hard times will
always reveal them. true love is merely friendship set on fire.”

Scene 12: Finale

“Happy”
The entire cast comes onstage to celebrate the happiness they’ve achieved.

Director & Choreographers

Arum Handayani

Director & Choreographer
“I am grateful to be able to work with everyone involved in this project.
What a great way to celebrate my tenth year at ACS Jakarta!”

Axin Fery

Choreographer
“I'm ecstatic to have been a part of this dance charity concert and
worked with an amazing team of choreographers. I am also
especially proud of the efforts that both the dancers and
supporting crew have made to make this show possible. With this
concert, not only do the students get to showcase their dance
skills, but they also begin to care for one another and channel their
passion into helping those in need. This is not just a job to me - it
has become very personal, like my calling. I hope this event will
continue to take place in the future, as it would certainly bring
light into many people's lives.”

Evan Putradjaja

Choreographer
“I am very happy about this dance concert, because knowing
that by doing what we love most, which is dancing, we can
learn and grow as a community. Especially to the young ones -
this dance concert will give them new experiences about
dancing, and we are doing this concert not as just a community
or a dance team, but as a family.”

7

Arya Samudra

Choreographer

“Working in a dance production has always been my personal favorite thing
to be a part of, and it is such an honor and pleasure to be able to share my
choreography and ideas into ACS’s very own “The Pursuit of Happiness.”
But what is most empowering is being able to see these young spirits enjoy
themselves and grow as the production is completing. The joy and the
exciting new spark that shows on their faces upon doing things they have
never done before is one of the most rewarding feelings one could get!”

Celica Krisanti

Choreographer

“This concert is definitely a dream come true. Around 3 years ago,
Bu Arum and I joked about how wonderful it would be to have a
show just for dance. This time three years ago, I thought it was
impossible. Yet, here we are now.

As time passed, we grew better. We became more solid as a team
and bonded with one another. This year marks my fifth year in the
dance crew and I have never been prouder. In my 5 years, I’ve
witnessed great improvements in our technique, mentality and the
relationship we have as a family. Everyone in this team, no matter
where they go, always find the time to reunite with us. The love I
have for this family will be rooted in my heart timelessly.”

Clarence Adrian

Choreographer, Senior Dance Captain

“In our most action-packed year yet, the ACS Jakarta Dance Crew
was challenged to organize our very first dance-based charity
concert. And although being a part this event has made our days
much more hectic (especially those in the IB programme), it has also
been most edifying. Besides getting to meet and learn from several
well-known Indonesian dancers and choreographers, we also got to
reunite with alumni who were past members of the crew. This has
definitely given us a sense of togetherness and taught us how to bond
more, not only as a crew, but as a family.

Throughout the few months of preparation we had, we surely stumbled through a number of

obstacles, particularly the lack of time - but I wouldn’t have chosen another group of people

to struggle with throughout the process. This Dance for Charity concert is a compilation of

our experiences and hardwork, as well as a showcase of what we’ve learnt from our several

months together.” 8

Joanna Aretha

Choreographer
The success of the Dance for Charity concert this year is a glaring reminder of
how far the Dance Crew has come since its early days. I remember being
intimidated by the extravagance of the Crew when I first came to ACS, but after
being convinced to join, I'm glad I haven't looked back since. Being captain
during my senior year was quite the experience - I learned so much about
bringing people and concepts together, and to be able to return as an alumni
choreographer for the concert was both exciting and heartwarming. It was great
dancing and joking around with familiar and new faces during rehearsals. It
really goes to show that being an ACS dancer goes beyond joining a normal crew, rather, you
become part of a much bigger family. The Dance Crew really tests your creativity and
adaptability (especially when you haven't danced in months and are asked to help choreograph
on the spot!), pushing you to be better at all times. We have Ibu Arum and our Coaches to
thank for driving us to accomplish what we have so far. All in all, my biggest takeaway from
my time with the Dance Crew is that yes, the people are just as extravagant offstage as they are
onstage ;)

Trinindita Shalihat

Choreographer
“This is the second time I’ve been invited to teach my choreography to
the ACS Jakarta Dance Crew, and I am proud to see that my vision is
being realized in a well-concepted performance. These dancers are
always enthusiastic and definitely a hardworking bunch!”

Feldi “Da Famous” Syafaat

Choreographer
“It has been a pleasure to be able to share the art of basketball
freestyling to the ACS Jakarta dancers. They were all a lot of fun to
work with, and they had such contagious energy! Even though our time
together was short, the results have been nothing short of satisfying.”

Erico Riduan

Choreographer
“I am so grateful to have been given a chance to teach a different genre of
dance to ACS Jakarta dancers. They learned the steps so quickly. They are
very fortunate to have such a huge event to showcase their talent.”

Guest Performers

Masa Depan Freestyle

Special Guest
“We are honored to be given the chance to collaborate with the
ACS Jakarta Dance Crew. However, we are more ecstatic to know
that we are not only going to be doing what we love most, which
is performing on stage and entertaining the audience, but also helping to raise funds for the
people in need.”

IDance Studio

Special Guest
“It has been a pleasure to take part in the ACS Jakarta Dance Concert. Thank
you for inviting us onstage with you - the idea of combining the performing
arts and fundraising for charity is genius. We truly look forward to working with ACS Jakarta
and its Dance Crew in future events!”

Agus Santoso of Airwheel Indonesia

Special Guest
“I think this is an amazing collaboration project. Not only do Masa
Depan Freestyle and Airwheel Indonesia get to collaborate, which I
would say is a pretty rare opportunity, this concert is also a way to expand the creativity of the
dancers and shape them into better performers in the future!”

Christian Erick

Special Guest
“I am very grateful to see how members of the ACS Jakarta Dance Crew grow
each year and am so blessed to witness how this family expands its horizon
towards greater heights.
Indeed, this concert will be awesome as the performers are overloaded with sizzling talents. A
great venue as well for the comeback performance of the unbeatable dance duo: Arum and
Kichan. And as the saying goes, it'll be sweeter the second time.
May God bless our family and it is an honour to be a blessing to others. Mabuhay!”

Dancers

Kim Min JI (EC)

“The practices have been fun and I feel happy and excited to dance with my friends. I also
feel proud that I was chosen to be Ariel.”

Nadine Syaugi (Grade 2)

“I love the feeling of joining the concert. I love the scenes because they are awesome. I love
practicing for the concert because it is so much fun. It’s fun because I dance a lot. I like
participating in this concert. I have learnt how to dance nicely. I am getting better as there are
more practices. I am excited about the concert.”

Sophia Owensby (Grade 6)

“I think that being able to participate in the Dance Concert is a great experience after 2 years
of being in the Dance CCA. I get to experience harder and more intense dance practices, which
enable me to develop into a better dancer. After every dance practice, I get better and better, as
mistakes are corrected. This concert means a lot to me as I am getting to bond with older and
younger dancers and we can all dance together as a family.”

Kania Valyne (Grade 9)

“The dance crew has never put on a show as big as “The Pursuit of Happiness”. It combines
the talents of different dancers from all over the school and I think each of them adds an
individual spark to their segments. I could tell that despite the age difference and the fact that
we barely know each other, we all have one thing in common which is our love for performing.
That is very significant, so that no matter how tiring rehearsals get, it does not discourage us
but will only make us better dancers. Each and every one of us have put in a lot of effort and
have made every part of this performance enjoyable. I’m glad that I get to be a part of this great
masterpiece and that I have such strong and supportive friends in the dance crew who
encourage not only me, but everyone to reach their fullest potential.”

Daniel Taylor (Grade 11)

“I’m honored to be celebrating my fourth year in the dance crew with this concert. Not only
as it is always a joy performing on stage, but also as the money goes to CAS to help the less
fortunate in the Philippines and Vietnam.”

11

Jonathan Tirtapraja (Alumni)

“I was glad to be given the opportunity to perform once again with my fellow dance crew
members in this Dance Charity Concert. This Disney-themed performacne has a slight twist
which makes the show a lot more interesting and definitely worth watching. A big shout-out to
all our teachers and choreographers for their hard work and dedication in putting this concert
together. All the profits made from this concert will be donated to the Grade 11’s CAS projects,
so thank you to everyone who came to watch and enjoy the show!”

Kaelynn turtan (Drama Club member)

It was a great experience collaborating with the Dance Crew. This production has given every
performer, whether playing a major or minor role, a chance to shine. It has also taught everyone
how to work together.

Teachers In Charge

Ega Pramestiana
“This year is the second year for primary dance CCA. As a TIC I can see how the skills of
these young dancers are improving. The dance concert “The Pursuit of Happiness” is a chance
for them to showcase their skills. As for me, its been a great pleasure having a chance to take
part in it. The energy and spirit that these young dancers have is inspiring. They dance with
their heart and no matter how tired they are, they give their best. I am sure that this experience
will be one of the most fun, inspiring and unforgettable moments for all of us.”

Vera Parrocha
“I always look forward to assemblies where the EC dancers can perform in front of an audience
and having something as big as this dance concert is something special to all of us. It makes
me beam with pride that they are doing something rigorous for their age, yet they do so with
much diligence and commitment to be able to deliver a great show alongside older, experienced,
and professional dancers. Yes, they look adorable everyday but performing in front of a huge
crowd proves that they are more than just cute little minions.”

Nino Hakim
"It truly is a heartwarming feeling to see how the dance crew has progressed. I was there with
Ibu Arum since 2009, and from how the dance crew progressed from a few students to almost
the whole school (from Nursery all the way to Secondary), it is truly amazing. Seeing them
coming out of their shells and performing dynamically, yet still retaining their humbleness as
ACS students was really something to witness. When Ibu Arum asked for the Drama Club's
help, we immediately jumped on the wagon, as this is such an amazing production to be part
of, both for the cause and from the performance point of view."

12

Victoria Onato
“In life, I cannot take into account anymore on how many times I’ve faced the crossroads of
indecision. Joining ACS was one of the decisions I made hoping to satisfy my own pursuit of
happiness. I guess I got lucky because that decision yields many forms of enjoyment in having
to work with some of the most hardworking and inspiring colleagues, adorable kids and
supportive parents. Although at first, I had a lot of reservations on becoming a part of the
Dance CCA, I found myself actually having fun working with kids who genuinely love what
they do. Their never-ending energy during long hours of rehearsals makes my heart grow
tender, watching them do the moves on stage. With all the hard work that the coaches, the
dancers and everyone that helped, put in together to come up with this wonderful show, you
are definitely in for a great treat. The one that might satisfy your own PURSUIT OF
HAPPINESS! “

Lavina Hu
"What a truly refreshing program! And how wonderful to join CCA dance including the
'Pursuit of Happiness' dance rehearsals. I love the performances, dancers, costumes, and the
choreographies. The music is delightful; the notes are clear; and the video is just great! I'm
very grateful to work together with everyone who are take part in this program. Thank you for
the time and hardships. Anyway, I can't wait to watch the upcoming dance charity concert this
month! Wish you all the best! "

Marcelo Crispino
“Performing is absolutely fun – what more if you do it for a good cause?
Dance for Charity is not only a showcase of ACS talents; it is also a testimony that ACSians
are indeed brothers to all. The dancers, crew and everyone involved spent months of hard work
in order to stage a good show, determined and driven to raise funds for their less fortunate
brothers and sisters. To everyone behind “Pursuit of Happiness”, we are proud of you.
Congratulations!”

Media Resource Crew

Ethan Yu
“I feel thankful and privileged to be given the opportunity to help out in the Dance For Charity
concert. Having worked with the ACS Jakarta dance crew for multiple events, I have seen them
grow and mature to well organised and coordinated dancers who dance with emotion. The
Secondary MRC wishes the Dance Crew the best of luck and we hope you enjoyed the show. ”
