“The rst attempt was unsuccessful, in fact disastrous. My intention was to use re as a tool
to create some interesting designs. But I couldn't control the re nor the surface work area,
and the entire hardboard burnt to cinders.

It occurred to me that I had to let the re dictate the design, and all I could do was watch and
rescue the hardboard just at the right moment. That was easier said than done. I tried a
second time. I got a fresh board poured kerosene on it and struck the match. Before I know
it, the hardboard was gone. I thought about it, and it seems to me that the solution was to
reverse roles with the re: re would be the artist and I, the artist, would be just a passive
observer. Then I realized that I hadn't abandoned my creative role, in fact that the act of
deciding when to stop the burning process still left in control. I was happy.

I tried again a third time, fourth, fth, sixth, seventh, and eight times. I used up eight
hardboards before I got an inkling of how to go about controlling the creative process. It
was with great difculty that, on the ninth try I just managed to rescue the board before it
was too late.

Quickly, I put out the re, and after the burnt hardboard cooled down I mounted it on

another board and nished the painting. Nobody knows why 'Someone burnt the bush' is

my most cherished work. Unless I tell them, nobody would know the time, labour, cost and

thought that went into producing this painting that, to all intents and purposes, looks simply

like a blacked out canvas.” - Kolade Oshinowo
