Shining The Spotlight on Khumbu Makhetho of Instalife Boer Goats Between the 23rd to the 27th of April, all roads were leading to the ZITF grounds in Bulawayo. People came from all over the country to exhibit their products and services at this prestigious event. one of our members representing the association, Mr Khumbu Makhetho of Instalife Boergoats raised the GBAZ flag high up in the sky as he also participated as an exhibitor and won a prize in the competitions which took place at the ZITF. Today we are pleased to have the opportunity to shine the Spotlight on Mr Khumbu Makhetho affectionately known as KB in goating circles GBAZ : What inspired you to go into goat breeding? KB : Having the understanding that currently the local and global market is insatiable for both goat meat and superior quality breeding stock. GBAZ : when did you start goat breeding? KB: l started in 2020 . And not long after that we were hit by the covid 19 pandemic. We went into lockdown and borders closed . But we did not give up on our vision . We continued with our breeding plans. GBAZ: What job or business did you do before taking up goat breeding? KB : l was in the ICT industry. However, due to my passion for goats l now only work in ICT part -time GBAZ: You won a prize at ZITF . What was was the category? KB: l got the Second Prize in the Class 5 Ram/ buck under 2 tooth category. GBAZ: Congratulations. Was it your first time to exhibit at ZITF ? KB: Yes it was our first time to exhibit at ZITF. At Instalife Boer Goats we believe that there is a huge demand for goat meat which is guaranteed to rise as consumers are becoming more health conscious GBAZ: The aim of the association is to improve the national goat herd by providing farmers with necessary knowledge in keeping goats. What tips can you share with fellow goat farmers? KB :One of the biggest challenges that farmers are facing in Zimbabwe is the ongoing drought which is affecting their livestock. This is forcing goat farmers to abandon their livestock and look for other means of survival. However, as a goat farmer you have to be persistent. I would like to emphasise that goat farming requires patience because investing in goat breeding is a long term goal. You have to let your goats multiply before selling. During this drought, it is wise for farmers to cull some of their goats in order to save the good stock.

GBAZ : We note that some farmers are still using the old traditional ways of breeding goats such as inbreeding, uncontrolled breeding and also putting the goats on free range grazing without supplementary feeding. What are your thoughts on this? KB : As a farmer, it is important to avoid inbreeding within your herd. This is when you breed males and females of the same bloodline. It results in high mortality rates and slow growth rates. We have to separate our weaner males from weaner females. We then find a breeding buck from a completely different bloodline to run with our females. It is also important to practice controlled breeding. By doing so, the farmer will find it easier to realise profits from the bulk sale of their progeny as they can all be sold at once. This is where goat breeding profits come from . Also farmers will be able to know when to expect kids and can plan accordingly , you will know when to wean your kids and also you will be be able to control your goats kidding season to take place when there is plenty of food in the veld. The most appropriate time to be receiving kids is during the months of November to March. In Zimbabwe this will be the rainy season where there will be plenty of food in the veld. GBAZ: Lastly, what would you advise farmers to have at all times in their goat “ first aid kit” KB : it is essential as a farmer to have a first aid kit which should include dip, antibiotic, dewormer, thermometer, vitamins and minerals etc. These will assist in case your goat falls sick , you can help it first then call the Vet after. GBAZ: As the Goats Breeders Association of Zimbabwe, We are taking it upon ourselves to educate the public on breeding goats on a commercial instead of on a subsistence scale. What are the benefits that you have experienced as a member ? KB : Events such as open days where the public attends farms for educational purposes are very empowering to both the farm owner and visitors. We also have the annual Goat Indaba and junior course training. GBAZ members enjoy generous entry fee discounts. And of course l get to raise the profile of my business by being interviewed for the newletter. You can get in touch with me on : [email protected] +27 72 333 4524 GBAZ : Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us . On a closing note l would like to add that the ZITF also makes it possible for the association to disseminate information to farmers.
