How do we survive the drought The Great Farmers Indaba brief Miss Yvonne Sibanda, a proud member of the Goat Breeders Association of Zimbabwe since last October, had a valuable experience at the Farmers Great Indaba on April 6, 2022, in Bulawayo. Accompanied by Mrs. Sifiso Agbetorwoka, a distinguished speaker from the Association, Yvonne was immersed in a day of enlightening presentations focusing on strategies for livestock farmers to navigate the challenges posed by El Niño and drought conditions. From cultivating one's fodder to the strategic destocking approach to endure the drought, the event offered invaluable insights. Yvonne emphasized the significance of networking and promoting the Goat Breeders Association of Zimbabwe, shedding light on the resilience of goats to drought conditions, a key takeaway from the event. A highlight for Yvonne was unraveling the intricacies of ammonification, a process vital for ensiling dry matter to serve as stock feed during scarcity. This method encompasses a variety of dry components like hay, leaves, Lucerne, and wheat straws, ultimately enhancing livestock feeding strategies during lean periods. Join us as we delve deeper into effective drought survival strategies in our forthcoming newsletter seminars, where we will continue to explore the sustainable practices discussed at the Farmers Great Indaba. Stay tuned for more insights and practical tips to empower livestock farmers in Zimbabwe.

Ingredients: - 1 whole goat, cleaned and prepared (around 15-20 kgs) - 2 cups olive oil - 1/4 cup lemon juice - 4 cloves of garlic, minced - 2 tablespoons fresh rosemary, chopped - 2 tablespoons fresh thyme, chopped - Salt and pepper to taste Instructions: 1. In a bowl, mix together the olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, rosemary, thyme, salt, and pepper to create the marinade. 2. Place the goat in a large roasting pan or a sturdy plastic bag, and pour the marinade over it. Make sure the marinade covers the entire goat. Marinate the goat in the fridge for at least 12 hours, or preferably overnight. Turn the goat occasionally to ensure it marinates evenly. 3. Prepare your spit roaster according to the manufacturer's instructions and preheat it. 4. Once the goat is done marinating, remove it from the fridge and let it sit at room temperature for about 1 hour before cooking. 5. Skewer the goat onto the spit rod, making sure to secure it tightly. 6. Place the spit rod onto the spit roaster and start the rotisserie. Cook the goat over medium heat, turning occasionally, for about 4-5 hours or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C) for medium doneness. 7. Baste the goat with the marinade every 30 minutes while cooking to keep it moist and flavorful. 8. Once the goat is cooked to your desired doneness, remove it from the spit roaster and let it rest for 20-30 minutes before carving. 9. Carve the goat into desired portions and serve with your favorite sides, such as isitshwala / sadza, roasted vegetables, salad, or potatoes. Enjoy your delicious goat spit roast! #goatisgold #GOAT Preparing A Goat Spit Roast
